Parental Attributions Concerning The Causes And Controllability Of Adolescent Depression, Joan E. Mcdowell May 2007

Parental Attributions Concerning The Causes And Controllability Of Adolescent Depression, Joan E. Mcdowell

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between parental attributions concerning adolescent depression and levels of negative expressed emotion (EE) within the home by breaking down attributional beliefs into two dimensions: the etiology of the disorder and the controllability of the symptoms. This study included 154 parents of adolescents who filled out an online survey. Participants were predominantly female and identified themselves as White/non-Hispanic. Among the teens, each gender was relatively well-represented. Mean age of respondents was 44.7, and mean age of the adolescents was 16.0. Of the entire sample, 101 were identified as the clinical …

Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements May 2007

Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements

All Theses

Characterization of the IBC Advanced Technologies SuperLig¨ 620 solid phase extraction resin was performed in order to develop an automated strontium-90 process monitor. The main focus was on strontium separation from barium, with the goal of developing an automated separation process for strontium-90 in Hanford high-level tank wastes. High-level waste tanks contain significant cesium-137 activities, of which barium daughters are of great concern as interferences to strontium quantification. A number of complexants were studied in a series of batch distribution coefficient experiments, as SuperLig¨ 620 was not previously known to elute strontium in typical mineral acids. The optimal separation was …

Influence Of Supramammary Lymph Node Extract On Cell Growth In Vitro, Danelle Duffy May 2007

Influence Of Supramammary Lymph Node Extract On Cell Growth In Vitro, Danelle Duffy

All Theses

ABSTRACT The bovine supramammary lymph node, located on the dorso-caudal surface of the udder, is a protein rich organ that is discarded on a regular basis during slaughter. Experiments were conducted to evaluate whether or not the lymph node extract could be used as a substitute for bovine growth serum in cell media. Two different preparations of lymph node extract were made and tested. Three different cell lines (MDA-MB-435, MAC-T, and 1C6) were used in assays to evaluate the lymph node extract as a supplement. The first extract yielded a protein concentration of 3.0 mg/ml (heat inactivated) and the second …

Age, Growth, And Fecundity Of Alabama Shad (Alosa Alabamae) In The Apalachicola River, Florida , Travis Ingram

All Theses

Age and growth of Alabama shad Alosa Alabamae were estimated by examining scales and otoliths from 203 adult fish collected on their spawning run in the upper Apalachicola River from 2005 and 2006. Ages of Alabama shad ranged from 1 - 4 years. Scales and otoliths both gave similar age estimates. Age distributions from this study differed from those of previous studies for both males and females. Female Alabama shad, on average, were found to be larger than males at age 2 and age 3. Alabama shad demonstrated a positive correlation of length to fecundity, with fecundity estimates ranging from …

Differentiation Of Gene Expression In Behaviorally Isolated Black And Brown Morphs Of Drosophila Elegans, Daiju Hoshino May 2007

Differentiation Of Gene Expression In Behaviorally Isolated Black And Brown Morphs Of Drosophila Elegans, Daiju Hoshino

Biology Theses - Archive

Pre-zygotic isolation has been recognized as the primary form of incipient speciation, with behavioral isolation as one of its most significant manifestations. In spite of intensive research on behavioral isolation, its molecular mechanism is still poorly understood. We present microarray data from two morphs, black (OH) and brown (HK), of Drosophila elegans. Since only OH females show strong preference to mate with same type of males, these two morphs provide a model system for investigations into the incipient stage of speciation. We analyzed the expression profiles from heads of mated OH females and non-mated females of both morphs. Subsequent analysis …

YY1 is a DNA-binding transcription factor found in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Database searches identified 62 YY1 related sequences from all the available genome sequences ranging from flying insects to human. These sequences are characterized by high levels of sequence conservation, ranging from 66% to 100% similarity, in the zinc finger DNA-binding domain of the predicted proteins. Phylogenetic analyses uncovered duplication events of YY1 in several different lineages, including flies, fish and mammals. Retroposition is responsible for generating one duplicate in flies, PHOL from PHO, and two duplicates in placental mammals, YY2 and Reduced Expression 1 (REX1) from YY1. DNA-binding …

Caspase Activity During Cell Stasis: Avoidance Of Apoptosis In An Invertebrate Extremophile, Artemia Franciscana, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Evaluation of apoptotic processes downstream of the mitochondrion reveals caspase-9- and low levels of caspase-3-like activities in partly purified extracts of Artemia franciscana embryos. However, in contrast to experiments with extracts of human hepatoma cells, cytochrome c fails to activate caspase-3 or -9 in extracts from A. franciscana. Furthermore, caspase-9 activity is sensitive to exogenous calcium. The addition of 5 mM calcium leads to a 4.86 ± 0.19 fold (SD) (n = 3) increase in activity, which is fully prevented with 150 mM KCl. As with mammalian systems, high ATP (>1.25 mM) suppresses caspase activity in A. franciscana extracts. …

• Background and Aims: When ecologically important plant traits are correlated they may be said to constitute an ecological 'strategy' dimension. Through identifying these dimensions and understanding their inter-relationships we gain insight into why particular trait combinations are favoured over others and into the implications of trait differences among species. Here we investigated relationships among several traits, and thus the strategy dimensions they represented, across 2134 woody species from seven Neotropical forests. • Methods: Six traits were studied: specific leaf area (SLA), the average size of leaves, seed and fruit, typical maximum plant height, and wood density (WD). Trait relationships …

A description of many biological processes requires knowledge of the 3-D structure of proteins and, in particular, the defined active site responsible for biological function. Many proteins, the genes of which have been identified as the result of human genome sequencing, and which were synthesized experimentally, await identification of their biological activity. Currently used methods do not always yield satisfactory results, and new algorithms need to be developed to recognize the localization of active sites in proteins. This paper describes a computational model that can be used to identify potential areas that are able to interact with other molecules (ligands, …

The Glow Discharge - A Multifaceted Optical Emission Source: From Solids Analysis To Metalloproteins, Timothy Brewer May 2007

The Glow Discharge - A Multifaceted Optical Emission Source: From Solids Analysis To Metalloproteins, Timothy Brewer

All Dissertations

Glow discharges (GD) are well known for their application to direct solids elemental analysis of metals and alloys by optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES). The most successful application of GD-OES has been the analysis of solid materials since the GD provides rapid, direct bulk and depth profiling analysis of solids, metals, powders, polymers, glasses and ceramics. However, solids analysis has typically suffered from the lack of true analytical blanks and the inability to study particulate solids in their native state. An approach for the analysis of solid powdered material entrapped in a sol-gel matrix by radio frequency glow discharge optical emission …

An Analysis Of Enzymatic Activity In Truncated And Wild-Type Auxin Conjugate Hydrolases In Medicago Trunculata (Barrel Clover) And Implications In Structural Modeling, Scott Sigethy May 2007

An Analysis Of Enzymatic Activity In Truncated And Wild-Type Auxin Conjugate Hydrolases In Medicago Trunculata (Barrel Clover) And Implications In Structural Modeling, Scott Sigethy

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Auxins are plant phytohormones that play an important part in plant growth and development. The level of active auxins in plants is regulated by enzymes known as hydrolases that release inactive bound forms of auxins, known as conjugates, as the active free form. We have previously isolated and enzymatically characterized the auxin conjugate hydrolase family from the model legume Medicago truncatula (barrel clover). In the process of cloning the cDNA for the genes MtIAR31, -32, -33, -34, and -36, we also cloned a truncated version of MtIAR33 (AMtIAR33) that apparently expresses an alternative hydrolase protein from a secondary, internal AUG …

Several rare and novel NNRTI [non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitor] resistance mutations were recently detected at codons 132 and 135 in RTs from clinical isolates using the yeast-based chimaeric TyHRT (Ty1/HIV-1 RT) phenotypic assay. Ile132 and Ile135 form part of the b7–b8 loop of HIV-1 RT (residues 132–140). To elucidate the contribution of these residues in RT structure–function and drug resistance, we constructed twelve recombinant enzymes harbouring mutations at codons 132 and 135–140. Several of the mutant enzymes exhibited reduced DNA polymerase activities. Using the yeast two-hybrid assay for HIV-1 RT dimerization we show that in some instances …

Spatial Selection And Inheritance: Applying Evolutionary Concepts To Population Dynamics In Heterogeneous Space., Eric M Schauber, Brett J Goodwin, Clive G Jones, Richard S Ostfeld

Organisms in highly suitable sites generally produce more offspring, and offspring can inherit this suitability by not dispersing far. This combination of spatial selection and spatial inheritance acts to bias the distribution of organisms toward suitable sites and thereby increase mean fitness (i.e., per capita population increase). Thus, population growth rates in heterogeneous space change over time by a process conceptually analogous to evolution by natural selection, opening avenues for theoretical cross-pollination between evolutionary biology and ecology. We operationally define spatial inheritance and spatial selective differential and then combine these two factors in a modification of the breeder's equation, derived …

Photopolymerization-Induced Directional Crystal Growth In Reactive Mixtures, Soo Jeoung Park, Pankaj Rathi, Thein Kyu May 2007

Photopolymerization-Induced Directional Crystal Growth In Reactive Mixtures, Soo Jeoung Park, Pankaj Rathi, Thein Kyu

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Photopolymerization-induced crystallization has been demonstrated in blends of polyethylene oxide-diacrylate at temperatures above the depressed melting temperature of the crystalline component. Upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation, the melting transition curve moves upward and eventually surpasses the reaction temperature, thereby inducing phase separation as well as crystallization. The present paper demonstrates the occurrence of directionally solidified interface morphologies of polymer crystals subjected to a photointensity gradient. The epitaxially grown seaweed or degenerate structures were observed at the circumference (low-intensity region) while the dense branched spherulites developed at the core high-intensity region.

The neuropeptide Y (NPY) family of peptides and receptors regulate food intake. Inherited variation in this pathway could influence susceptibility to obesity and its complications, including type 2 diabetes. We genotyped a set of 71 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that capture the most common variation in NPY, PPY, PYY, NPY1R, NPY2R, and NPY5R in 2,800 individuals of recent European ancestry drawn from the near extremes of BMI distribution. Five SNPs located upstream of NPY2R were nominally associated with BMI in men (P values = 0.001-0.009, odds ratios [ORs] 1.27-1.34). No association with BMI was observed in women, and no consistent …
