Watching Ultrafast Barrierless Excited-State Isomerization Of Pseudocyanine In Real Time, Benjamin Dietzek, Arkady Yartsev, Alexander N. Tarnovsky May 2007

Watching Ultrafast Barrierless Excited-State Isomerization Of Pseudocyanine In Real Time, Benjamin Dietzek, Arkady Yartsev, Alexander N. Tarnovsky

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The photoinduced excited-state processes in 1,1'-diethyl-2,2'-cyanine iodine are investigated using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. Using a broad range of probe wavelengths, the relaxation of the initially prepared excited-state wavepacket can be followed down to the sink region. The data directly visualize the directed downhill motion along the torsional reaction coordinate and suggest a barrierless excited-state isomerization in the short chain cyanine dye. Additionally, ultrafast ground-state hole and excited-state hole replica broadening is observed. While the narrow excited-state wavepacket broadens during pump-probe overlap, the ground-state hole burning dynamics takes place on a significantly longer time-scale. The experiment reported can be considered …

Design, Analysis And Development Of A Morphable Wing Structure For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Performance Augmentation, Abhijit Hiraman Supekar

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

In this research, we propose mechanisms to continuously morph a wing from a lower aspect ratio to a higher and to further extremities of a gull and an inverted-gull configuration. The mechanism comprises of a linear actuator for the extension of the wing and the servo motors to obtain the gull and inverted gull configurations. The initial design and preliminary finite element representation using 3D-beams and plates in ANSYS Classic were the benchmarks to proceed for the detailed structural analysis of the complete wing in ANSYS Workbench. An elliptical pressure distribution at the quarter cord is assumed for the linear …

The Pollination Ecology Of Hedysarum Boreale Nutt. (Fabaceae) And Evaluation Of Its Pollinating Bees For Restoration Seed Production, Katharine A. Swoboda May 2007

The Pollination Ecology Of Hedysarum Boreale Nutt. (Fabaceae) And Evaluation Of Its Pollinating Bees For Restoration Seed Production, Katharine A. Swoboda

Biology

Federal land managers desire a consistent and cost-effective source of Hedysarum boreale Nutt. seed for rangeland restoration in the Great Basin and adjacent ecosystems. The breeding biology of H. boreale was assessed via hand pollination experiments at 2 sites in Cache County, Utah, USA in 2003. H. boreale was found to be self-compatible, but did not produce fruit and seeds in the absence of bee visitors. Xenogamy (out-crossing) treatments resulted in increased seed viability and decreased predispersal reproductive attrition. H. boreale was found to be homogamous during 2004 experiments designed to determine the timing and duration of stigma receptivity. H. …

Sexual Conflict Over Egg Allocation: A Dynamic Programming Approach To Modeling The Evolution Of Male Harm And Female Resistance, David Kelley May 2007

Sexual Conflict Over Egg Allocation: A Dynamic Programming Approach To Modeling The Evolution Of Male Harm And Female Resistance, David Kelley

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Sexual conflict, which is expected to be ubiquitous among polygamous species, is known to occasionally result in male adaptations that are harmful to females. One theoretical model indicates that males may benefit from physically harming their mates by triggering a “terminal investment” reproductive response by them. Using dynamic programming, we explore how females optimize their lifetime egg allocation, how selection acts on males to exploit such allocation, and how females respond to resist this exploitation. The model reveals alternative female response pathways; one of the most effective of which is simply to forgo plasticity in egg allocation. By switching to …

Characterizing Ntrc-Like Activators Affecting Myxococcus Xanthus Development, Jessica Eisenstatt May 2007

Characterizing Ntrc-Like Activators Affecting Myxococcus Xanthus Development, Jessica Eisenstatt

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Myxococcus xanthus is a soil bacterium that is a member of a group of organisms known as the myxobacteria. M. xanthus cells live in biofilms and feed on other bacteria to obtain nutrients. During times of inadequate nourishment, M. xanthus cells aggregate, build fruiting bodies, and fruiting body cells differentiate into spores that are highly resistant. In order to form the fruiting bodies, M. xanthus cells must be able to move across solid surfaces. There are two motility systems, the adventurous system (A-motility) and the social system (S-motility), used by M. xanthus cells to navigate across surfaces. The adventurous system …

Clustering Acoustic Backscatter In The Angular Response Space, Luciano E. Fonseca, Brian R. Calder May 2007

Clustering Acoustic Backscatter In The Angular Response Space, Luciano E. Fonseca, Brian R. Calder

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Backscatter mosaicking is a necessary step in the analysis and interpretation of sidescan and multibeam sonar records. However, due to limitations intrinsic to the mosaicking technique, backscatter mosaics are restricted in their capacity to unambiguously discriminate seafloor properties. A more adequate technique to characterize the seafloor is the analysis of backscatter angular responses, since those responses are intrinsic properties of the seafloor. This technique sometimes lacks spatial resolution, however, as the analysis is limited to the swath width of the sonar. In this paper, we propose an approach to combine mosaicking and angular response analysis techniques in an attempt to …

Efficacy Of Selected Natural And Synthetic Novel Organic Compounds In Prevention Of Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Macrofouling By Byssal Attachment Inhibition, Maj-Britt Angarano May 2007

Efficacy Of Selected Natural And Synthetic Novel Organic Compounds In Prevention Of Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Macrofouling By Byssal Attachment Inhibition, Maj-Britt Angarano

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The invasive, freshwater, bivalve, Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) was introduced to North America in the Great lakes in 1986 and has since spread throughout the waterway of the eastern and central United States and southeastern Canada. This species has imposed escalating economic burdens through its macrofouling of submerged structures and raw water using systems. Increasing restrictions on the chemical mitigation and control methodologies used to prevent their macrofouling, particularly organometallic or oxidizing chemicals, continue to stimulate research efforts to develop effective yet environmentally benign antifouling agents against this species and other macrofouling organisms. The efficacy in inhibiting zebra mussel byssal …

Carbon-Sulfur Bond Formation Via Alkene Addition To An Oxidized Ruthenium-Thiolate., Kiran B. Venna 1974-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports the reactivity of the trithiolato Ru complex PPN[Ru(DPPBT)3] (DPPBT = 2-diphenylphosphinobenzenethiolate) (1a) with alkenes upon oxidation. Complex 1a in acetonitrile shows two redox events at -345 mV and +455 mV in the square wave voltammogram. Bulk oxidation at a holding potential of +100 mV yields [tris(2-(diphenylphosphino)thiaphenolato)ruthenium(III)], (1b). During oxidation, the absorption bands at 540 nm, 797 nm and 1041 nm grow in intensity while there is a decrease in the absorption band at 435 nm. A plot of charge versus time during bulk electrolysis shows a total coulometric charge of 1.14 electron equivalent. The square wave voltammogram …

Development Of Fuzzy System And Nonlinear Regression Models For Ozone And Pm2.5 Air Quality Forecasts., Yiqiu Lin 1971-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ozone forecast models using nonlinear regression (NLR) have been successfully applied to daily ozone forecast for seven metro areas in Kentucky, including Ashland, Bowling Green, Covington, Lexington, Louisville, Owensboro, and Paducah. In this study, the updated 2005 NLR ozone forecast models for these metro areas were evaluated on both the calibration data sets and independent data sets. These NLR ozone forecast models explained at least 72% of the variance of the daily peak ozone. Using the models to predict the ozone concentrations during the 2005 ozone season, the metro area mean absolute errors (MAEs) of the model hindcasts ranged from …

Non-Redundant And Critical Roles For Leukotriene B4 Receptors Blt1 And Blt2 In Mouse Models Of Inflammatory Arthritis., Steven Mathis 1979- May 2007

Non-Redundant And Critical Roles For Leukotriene B4 Receptors Blt1 And Blt2 In Mouse Models Of Inflammatory Arthritis., Steven Mathis 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inflammation is now recognized as an important factor in several age-related diseases such as arthritis, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. In each case, sub-clinical chronic inflammation occurs over years and leads to progressive destruction of the tissue until the symptoms become clinically apparent. Eicosanoids such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes play an important role in inflammation. Among these, leukotriene B 4 (LTB 4 ) has had a long history of being associated with numerous inflammatory diseases. A high affinity receptor for LTB 4 , LTB 4 receptor 1 (BLT 1) has been well-characterized in human and murine tissues. While the molecular …

Regulation Of Nuclear Respiratory Factor-1 Expression By 17beta-Estradiol : A New Mechanism For Coordinating Mitochondrial Gene Expression., Kathleen Annmarie Mattingly 1979- May 2007

Regulation Of Nuclear Respiratory Factor-1 Expression By 17beta-Estradiol : A New Mechanism For Coordinating Mitochondrial Gene Expression., Kathleen Annmarie Mattingly 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mechanisms by which estrogens regulate mitochondrial activity are not completely understood. Chronic treatment of ovariectomized rats with estradiol (E 2 ) increased the amount of Nuclear Respiratory Factor-1 (NRF-1) protein in cerebral blood vessels. NRF-1 is a transcription factor that regulates the expression of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes including mitochondrial transcription factor A ( TFAM , which, in turn, controls transcription of the mitochondrial genome. Here, I tested the hypothesis that E 2 increases NRF-1 transcription through a genomic activation of estrogen receptor (ER) resulting in a coordinate increase in nuclear- and mitochondrial- encoded genes, mitochondrial respiratory activity, and mitochondrial …

Participation Of Mouse Dna Polymerases Iota, Eta, And Rev1 In Translesion Synthesis Of Carcinogen Induced Dna Adducts And Carcinogenesis., Chad Aaron Dumstorf 1977- May 2007

Participation Of Mouse Dna Polymerases Iota, Eta, And Rev1 In Translesion Synthesis Of Carcinogen Induced Dna Adducts And Carcinogenesis., Chad Aaron Dumstorf 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis indicate that most mutations are dependent on the activity of translesion synthesis DNA polymerases. The impact of reducing the level of these polymerases on mutagenesis and carcinogenesis in mouse models is poorly defined. Using knock out strategies we were able to remove polymerase eta (pol ç), and polymerase iota (pol é) and pol eta/pol iota from the mouse and lower REV1 in the mouse lung. This dissertation reports the changes in UV-induced carcinogenesis and mutagenesis that were observed. Mutagenesis data in pol iota deficient cells clearly indicate pol iota as a …
