The Motivational Readiness To Change Leisure Time Physical Activity Behavior Of Mississippi Community College Students, Jerry Phillip Crenshaw May 2007

The Motivational Readiness To Change Leisure Time Physical Activity Behavior Of Mississippi Community College Students, Jerry Phillip Crenshaw

Theses and Dissertations

The stages of motivational readiness to change leisure time physical activity behavior of students from two Mississippi community colleges were investigated. The Stages of Motivational Readiness to Change (SMRC) model postulates that behavior change is a longitudinal process described by five stages that assess an individual?s motivational level relative to changing leisure time physical activity behavior. That is, individuals are positioned in one of the following five stages at any given point in time: (a) precontemplation (i.e., no intention to change); (b) contemplation (i.e., considering a change); (c) preparation (i.e., small changes already made toward an ultimate behavior goal); (d) …

The Need For Retail Shopping Convenience: An Empirical Examination Of Its Antecedents And Consequences In Mexican-American Consumers And White, Non-Hispanic Consumers In The United States, Michelle Bednarz Beauchamp

Theses and Dissertations

Inherent in the process of marketing is the notion that consumption requires both time and effort. While shopping, consumers may spend time and effort to complete several tasks such as searching for information, traveling to the store?s location, searching for a parking spot, traveling through the store, locating the product they wish to purchase, and completing the checkout process. Convenience is defined as anything that reduces consumer time and effort expenditures and is becoming increasingly important to consumers in the United States. This dissertation provides insight into an emerging consumer need--the need for retail shopping convenience (NRSC). Specifically, this dissertation …

The Relationship Between Food Security Status And Overweight Amongst Women Age 16-85 Years Old, Janice Carol Giddens May 2007

The Relationship Between Food Security Status And Overweight Amongst Women Age 16-85 Years Old, Janice Carol Giddens

Theses and Dissertations

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2002 were used to examine demographic factors and BMI as it related to household food security status of women 16-85 years of age. Four designations were used to classify households: fully food secure, marginally food secure, food insecure without hunger, and food insecure with hunger. Significant relationships exist between food security and age, education, ethnicity, poverty income ratio and BMI. Women from food insecure households with hunger were at greater risk of becoming overweight. Households of compromised food security status most likely had an income between 0-130% of the poverty …

The Role Of Expectations On Waterfowl Hunter Satisfaction, Kevin D. Brunke May 2007

The Role Of Expectations On Waterfowl Hunter Satisfaction, Kevin D. Brunke

Theses and Dissertations

Hunter satisfaction has received extensive attention in the literature, but the role of expectations on satisfaction has been neglected. Consumer satisfaction researchers often use the expectancy disconfirmation paradigm (i.e., differences between expectations and reality) to address relationships between expectations and satisfaction. I used this paradigm to examine the relationship between expectations and satisfaction for waterfowl hunters in Arkansas and Mississippi. I found hunter satisfaction was a partial function of fulfilled expectations in both studies. Performance-only measures generally correlated more strongly with overall satisfaction than disconfirmations measured by a difference score. Conversely, disconfirmation of expectations for a season measured on a …

Sem Analysis Of Glue Behavior When Bonding Glass Structures With Complex Geometries, Yuri Sikorski, Robert Cunningham, Herman Orgeron, Chris Schenck, Ali Zand

Chemistry & Biochemistry Presentations And Conference Materials

Bonding of glass has been studied for many years and is a mature technology today. However, the recent advances in bio-photonics and micro-fluidics, such as lab-on-a-chip devices, accentuate a need to provide reliable adhesion and sealing of components with extremely complex surface geometries. In many cases it is necessary to prevent the adhesives from leaking into microscopic channels, capillaries and holes. We present the Scanning Electron Microscopy study of adhesion of glass samples with complex surface features. Variety of adhesion conditions and procedures were tried and studied. The results demonstrate the possibility of controlled reliable adhesion and sealing without filling/obstructing …

Relative Versus Non-Relative Foster Care: A Comparative Study, Victoria Picinich May 2007

Relative Versus Non-Relative Foster Care: A Comparative Study, Victoria Picinich

Social Work Theses

This study explored the benefits and limitations of relative foster care versus non-relative foster care. This study hypothesized, that despite the limitations of relative placement, the emotional benefit to the child placed in a relative setting far outweighs the challenges of it. The methodology employed quantitative and qualitative measurements. An in-depth questionnaire survey was mailed to 150 relative and 150 non-relative providers; and a focus group was facilitated. The study revealed that relative foster care, when available, is superior to non-relative foster care because of the emotional and social connection present as a result of the pre-existing relationship between the …

Design And Development Of An In-House Scanning Tunneling Microscope System, Esvar Subramanian

All Theses

ABSTRACT
The invention of Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) by Binnig and Rohrer in 1982 eliminated the use of optical lenses and replaced the conventional optical microscopes with a new class of microscopes called the Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPM). Because of their unique characteristics such as higher resolution and acquisition of nano level images without affecting the physical properties of the sample, they have found wide applications in a variety of scientific disciplines such as biology, material science and electrochemistry. After considerable advancements in instrumentation, the STM has evolved as a nanomanipulation and nanofabrication tool. It operates in two modes: constant …

Viability, Functionality, And Genetic Assessment Of Cells After Laser Guidance, Tabitha Rosenbalm May 2007

Viability, Functionality, And Genetic Assessment Of Cells After Laser Guidance, Tabitha Rosenbalm

All Theses

We systematically vary the controllable laser parameters, namely, wavelength, intensity, and exposure time of the laser on single cells to clearly establish laser parameters that allow negligible cell damage with significant cellular position control. To accomplish this goal, embryonic day 7 (E7) chick forebrains neurons were cultured with control and test cells selected one hour after seeding to allow attachment, at which time test cells were subjected to the laser. Cells were imaged at 4, 12, 24, and 36 hours after laser exposure to evaluate viability and functionality by using the Live/Dead Viability Cytotoxicity Kit (Molecular Probes L3224) and measuring …

Differences between manual and machine motility analysis was determined for total motility (MOT) of bull semen samples (N=117) three ways: manual analysis on a microscope and on computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) systems: Hamilton-Thorne IVOS and Minitube SpermVision (SV). CASA analysis includes progressive motility (PRO) and related kinematic parameters. Analysis indicated differences between MOT: 83.06 (IVOS), 75.84 (manual), 65.48 (SV), and PRO: 44.25 (IVOS) and 60.07(SV). Relationships existed between manual MOT and both IVOS MOT (r=0.32) and SV MOT (r=0.59). The relationships between IVOS and SV MOT and PRO was notable (r=0.70 for both MOT and PRO).
The ability of platelet-activating …

Reservoir Sedimentation And Property Values, Ronald Leftwich Jr. May 2007

Reservoir Sedimentation And Property Values, Ronald Leftwich Jr.

All Theses

This thesis uses multiple regression analysis in the determination of two hedonic models to explain the impact that sedimentation and algal bloom events may have on property values along Lake Greenwood, SC. Utilizing different independent variables, the hedonic equations reflect the market value and the sales price of the selected lakeside properties. With an average 4.6 percent of the original lake area lost to accreted sediment, the models show a $7,800 to nearly $10,000 average loss in property value or an estimated $5 to $6 million in value lost within the study area. Properties sold within a two-year period following …

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this manuscript we are concerned with functional imaging of the colon to assess the kinetics of a microbicide lubricant. The overarching goal is to understand the distribution of the lubricant in the colon. Such information is crucial for understanding the potential impact of the microbicide on HIV viral transmission. The experiment was conducted by imaging a radiolabeled lubricant distributed in the subject’s colon. The tracer imaging was conducted via single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), a non-invasive, in-vivo functional imaging technique. We develop a novel principal curve algorithm to construct a three dimensional curve through the colon images. The …
