A Potential Pollen Proxy For Enso Derived From The Sajama Ice Core, Kam-Biu Liu, Carl A. Reese, Lonnie G. Thompson May 2007

A Potential Pollen Proxy For Enso Derived From The Sajama Ice Core, Kam-Biu Liu, Carl A. Reese, Lonnie G. Thompson

Faculty Publications

An annually resolved pollen record spanning a 39-year period ( 1958 - 1996) from the Sajama Ice Cap, located on the western Bolivian Altiplano, reveals significant interannual variations in both pollen concentration and composition. The pollen assemblages within the annual layers are dominated by typical Altiplano taxa, especially Poaceae and Asteraceae. On an annual basis the pollen concentrations are strongly negatively correlated (Pearson's r = - 0.716) with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). Studies from Sajama and other tropical ice caps have shown that during El Nino years, the weather on the Altiplano is decidedly warmer and drier, which enhances …

The Differential Effects Of Two Critical Osteoclastogenesis Stimulating Factors On Bone Biomechanics, Yuyu Yuan May 2007

The Differential Effects Of Two Critical Osteoclastogenesis Stimulating Factors On Bone Biomechanics, Yuyu Yuan

All Dissertations

Many skeletal diseases, such as osteoporosis and malignant bone metastases, are generally osteolytic and associated with increased bone resorption and decreased bone strength. Within a complex cytokine environment, the proteins RANKL and M-CSF are critical for osteoclast differentiation and activation, and thus fundamental effectors of osteolytic disorders. Previous studies showed that M-CSF stimulates the proliferation and early differentiation of osteoclast progenitors to osteoclast lineage, while RANKL targets the later stages of fusion and activation, and stimulates the formation of functional active osteoclasts. However, impacts of artificially elevated levels of these proteins on the skeleton system have not been fully characterized. …

Developing A Support Group For Adolescents With Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus Using An Outdoor Adventure Educational Modality, Tara Lynch May 2007

Developing A Support Group For Adolescents With Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus Using An Outdoor Adventure Educational Modality, Tara Lynch

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This independent study details the group process aspects of creating an outdoor adventure based support group for adolescents living with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). A review of previous outdoor adventure programs is included, followed by a rationale for the new material. The developmental assessment of teens living with IDDM identifies a need for greater self-confidence, increased independence, and social support. To meet this need, a program that includes aspects of team building, personal challenge, and problem-solving has been created.

Estimating The Effect Of Vigorous Physical Activity On Mortality In The Elderly Based On Realistic Individualized Treatment And Intention-To-Treat Rules, Oliver Bembom, Mark J. Van Der Laan May 2007

Estimating The Effect Of Vigorous Physical Activity On Mortality In The Elderly Based On Realistic Individualized Treatment And Intention-To-Treat Rules, Oliver Bembom, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The effect of vigorous physical activity on mortality in the elderly is difficult to estimate using conventional approaches to causal inference that define this effect by comparing the mortality risks corresponding to hypothetical scenarios in which all subjects in the target population engage in a given level of vigorous physical activity. A causal effect defined on the basis of such a static treatment intervention can only be identified from observed data if all subjects in the target population have a positive probability of selecting each of the candidate treatment options, an assumption that is highly unrealistic in this case since …

The Integrative Correlation Coefficient: A Measure Of Cross-Study Reproducibility For Gene Expressionea Array Data, Leslie M. Cope, Liz Garrett-Mayer, Edward Gabrielson, Giovanni Parmigiani May 2007

The Integrative Correlation Coefficient: A Measure Of Cross-Study Reproducibility For Gene Expressionea Array Data, Leslie M. Cope, Liz Garrett-Mayer, Edward Gabrielson, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Multi-study analysis adds value to microarray experiments. However, because of significant technical differences between microarray platforms, and because of differences in study design, it can be difficult to combine data. We have developed a statistical measure of reproducibility that can be applied to individual genes, measured in two different studies. This statistic, which we call the Integrative Correlation Coefficient or Correlation of Correlations, borrows strength across many genes to estimate the strength of the relationship between expression values in the two studies.

Asymmetric Dihydroxylation And Aziridination Of Allenes And Related Chemistry, Renmao Liu May 2007

Asymmetric Dihydroxylation And Aziridination Of Allenes And Related Chemistry, Renmao Liu

Theses and Dissertations

A novel method for asymmetric synthesis of α-hydroxy ketone with excellent regio- and stereoselectivity has been established by the systematic investigation of asymmetric dihydroxylation of allenes. The efficiency of kinetic resolution of racemic allenes was also investigated by using the AD reaction on both 1,3-disubstituted and trisubstituted allenes. Steric effects, electronic effects and allene substitution are also discussed. Aziridines were formed by copper-catalyzed intramolecular nitrene addition to alkenes. The carbamate group was used as the tether between the alkene and the nitrene. Subsequent nucleophilic attack of the aziridine was accomplished using RSH, R2NH, N3-,or ROH as the nucleophile. This addition …
