College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study is to measure the benefits of a remedial low-track academic program that includes individualized instruction using learning technologies by comparing the 9th grade Explore, 10th grade Plan, and 11th grade ACT standardized tests scores as a measure of academic achievement in English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. A second purpose is to determine if there is a difference in academic achievement between male and female students that have experienced the same curriculum in a co-institutional single-sex schooling environment. The standardized test scores of male and female students from the class of 2007, the treatment group, …

Ez-Viz Movie, Laura Lynn Grell Jun 2007

Ez-Viz Movie, Laura Lynn Grell

Theses

The molecular modeling program PyMOL [1], developed by DeLano Scientific, has the capabilities to produce high-quality molecular images and animations. Although it is a very powerful tool, working with PyMOL requires the use of complex, syntactical commands that can be difficult for users to learn. To address this issue, a plugin coined EZ-Viz was developed in the summer of 2005 to provide an easy-to-use interface for interacting with PyMOL. While the interface replaced many PyMOL commands with buttons and menus, it lacked functionality that was dedicated to aiding users who wanted to create their own custom, molecular animations in PyMOL. …

Environmental Risk Assessment Of Groundwater Recharge In Liwa Aquifer, Entisar Salem Al-Katheeri

Theses

The Abu Dhabi Emirate has witnessed a remarkable development in the various aspects of life during the last three decades. Such rapid development imposes a tremendous pressure on natural resources including water. Conventional water resources in the Emirate are limited. The surface water is almost absent due to the scarcity and randomness of rainfall coupled with the prevailing arid conditions and high evaporation rates. In addition, groundwater is mostly brackish and non-renewable. Over-pumping practices have resulted into a severe decline in the groundwater levels and quality. A large portion of the freshwater demands in the Abu Dhabi Emirate is covered …

Reaching Fathers In Parent Education: Perceptions Of Newsletter Value Among Fathers And Father Figures, Sean E. Brotherson, Christopher J. Bouwhuis

Journal of Extension

Does parent education pay attention to fathers and their perceptions of educational resources? Not often enough. The NDSU Extension Service developed a parenting newsletter for fathers of young children--Father Times. Findings focused on how fathers of children in kindergarten perceive and value the newsletter as a resource. Results showed that fathers: (1) appreciated the layout, readability, and usefulness of the newsletter; (2) valued the newsletter more highly than other formal sources of information; and (3) indicated the features and topics most valuable to them. A newsletter for fathers can be a unique resource for reaching fathers in parent education.

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The phylogenetics and phylogeography of the Jamaican fruit-eating bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) were examined based on analysis of DNA sequence variation in the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene for 176 individuals representing all 13 subspecies of A. jamaicensis (sensu Simmons 2005). Results document that A. jamaicensis (sensu Simmons 2005) comprises 3 monophyletic assemblages that are separated phylogenetically by the presence of A. obscurus, A. lituratus, and . amplus. According to the mitochondrial DNA sequence variation, A. jamaicensis, A. schwartzi, and A. planirostris are appropriate species-level names for these lineages. Haplotypes identifiable as A. jamaicensis were absent east …

Epstein-Barr Virus Inhibits Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Lytic Replication In Primary Effusion Lymphomas, Dongsheng Xu, Jun Zhang, Tricia Coleman, Ashley Fagot, Catherine Kotalik, Lingjun Zhao, Pankaj Trivedi, Clinton J. Jones, Luwen Zhang

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The majority of AIDS-associated primary effusion lymphomas (PEL) are latently infected with both Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). PELs harboring two viruses have higher oncogenic potential, suggesting functional interactions between EBV and KSHV. The KSHV replication and transcription activator (K-RTA) is necessary and sufficient for induction of KSHV lytic replication. EBV latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1) is essential for EBV transformation and establishment of latency in vitro. We show EBV inhibits chemically induced KSHV lytic replication, in part because of a regulatory loop in which K-RTA induces EBV LMP-1 and LMP-1 in turn inhibits K-RTA expression and …

The Transcriptional Repressor K-Rbp Modulates Rta-Mediated Transactivation And Lytic Replication Of Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus, Zhilong Yang, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The replication and transcription activator (RTA) protein of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)/human herpesvirus 8 functions as the key regulator to induce KSHV lytic replication from latency through activation of the lytic cascade of KSHV. Elucidation of the host factors involved in RTA-mediated transcriptional activation is pivotal for understanding the transition between viral latency and lytic replication. KSHV-RTA binding protein (K-RBP) was previously isolated as a cellular RTA binding protein of unknown function. Sequence analysis showed that K-RBP contains a Kruppel-associated box (KRAB) at the N terminus and 12 adjacent zinc finger motifs. In similarity to other KRAB-containing zinc finger …

Co-Production Of Chemical And Energy Products From Distillers Grains Using Supercritical Fluid Extraction And Thermochemical Conversion Technologies, Lijun Wang, Ajay Kumar, Curtis L. Weller, David D. Jones, Milford A. Hanna Jun 2007

Co-Production Of Chemical And Energy Products From Distillers Grains Using Supercritical Fluid Extraction And Thermochemical Conversion Technologies, Lijun Wang, Ajay Kumar, Curtis L. Weller, David D. Jones, Milford A. Hanna

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Dry-grind technology has become the dominant method for ethanol production. During drygrind ethanol production, roughly one-third of the dry grain mass resides in the dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) as by-products (i.e., ∼0.8 kg/L ethanol). The energy content residing in the 0.8 kg DDGS is about 20 MJ, compared to the consumption of 1 MJ electricity and 10 MJ thermal energy for production of each liter of ethanol. A sequential supercritical fluid process with solvents including carbon dioxide, water and ethanol was used to recover high-value chemicals from DDGS. Thermochemical conversion methods were used to convert the DDGS residue …

Early Investment In Soil Conservation Research Continues To Provide Dividends, John E. Gilley, D. C. Flanagan

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Current soil conservation programs are built upon an established research legacy. Hugh H. Bennett, chief of the USDA Soil Conservation Service from 1935 to 1951, was instrumental in the establishment of a network of 35 soil conservation experiment stations (SCES). Research projects were initiated at the SCES in the 1930s to investigate the principal factors causing erosion and to identify the most effective and practical methods of controlling soil loss from agricultural areas. Information obtained from the SCES, and selected other locations, was assembled at the National Runoff and Soil Loss Data Center (NRSLDC) established on the campus of Purdue …

Evolutionary Avenues For, And Constraints On, The Transmission Of Frog Lung Flukes (Haematoloechus Spp.) In Dragonfly Second Intermediate Hosts, Matthew G. Bolek, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

Metacercariae survival patterns and their distribution in second intermediate odonate hosts were examined for four species of frog lung flukes. Surveys of aquatic larvae and recently emerged teneral dragonflies and damselflies indicated that prevalence and mean abundance of Haematoloechus spp. metacercariae were significantly lower in teneral dragonflies than larval dragonflies, while there was no significant difference in prevalence or mean abundance of Haematoloechus spp. metacercariae among larval and teneral damselflies. Experimental infections of dragonflies indicated that metacercariae of Haematoloechus coloradensis and Haematoloechus complexus were located in the head, thorax, and branchial basket of dragonflies, whereas metacercariae of Haematoloechus longiplexus and …

The ΑD-Globin Gene Originated Via Duplication Of An Embryonic Α-Like Globin Gene In The Ancestor Of Tetrapod Vertebrates, Federico G. Hoffmann, Jay F. Storz Jun 2007

The ΑD-Globin Gene Originated Via Duplication Of An Embryonic Α-Like Globin Gene In The Ancestor Of Tetrapod Vertebrates, Federico G. Hoffmann, Jay F. Storz

Jay F. Storz Publications

Gene duplication is thought to play an important role in the co-option of existing protein functions to new physiological pathways. The globin superfamily of genes provides an excellent example of the kind of physiological versatility that can be attained through the functional and regulatory divergence of duplicated genes that encode different subunit polypeptides of the tetrameric hemoglobin protein. In contrast to prevailing views about the evolutionary history of the α-globin gene family, here we present phylogenetic evidence that the αA- and αD-globin genes are not the product of a single, tandem duplication of an ancestral globin …
