Cooperative Uav Formation Flying With Obstacle/Collision Avoidance, Xiaohua Wang, Vivek Yadav, S. N. Balakrishnan Jul 2007

Cooperative Uav Formation Flying With Obstacle/Collision Avoidance, Xiaohua Wang, Vivek Yadav, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Navigation problems of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) flying in a formation in a free and an obstacle-laden environment are investigated in this brief. when static obstacles popup during the flight, the UAVs are required to steer around them and also avoid collisions between each other. In order to achieve these goals, a new dual-mode control strategy is proposed: a “safe mode” is defined as an operation in an obstacle-free environment and a “danger mode” is activated when there is a chance of collision or when there are obstacles in the path. Safe mode achieves global optimization because the dynamics of …

Taxonomy Of The Species Of Amphigerontia (Psocoptera : Psocidae) Of The Rocky Mountains Of The United States And Canada, Edward L. Mockford, Johannes E. Anonby

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Five species of psocids of the genus Amphigerontia Kolbe 1880, are recorded from the Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada. Amphigerontia longicauda, n. sp., is described. Amphigerontia petiolata (Banks) is recorded from the Rocky Mountains for the first time. The holotype of Amphigerontia infernicola (Chapman) is re-examined and described in detail. New characters for the separation of females of Amphigerontia bijasciata (Latreille) and Amphigerontia montivaga (Chapman) resulted in many new records of the latter species, previously known in the Rocky Mountains from only a single locality. Species-level characters are reviewed and several new ones are added. A key …

Improvement And Evaluation Of Greenlip Abalone Hatchery And Nursery Production. Final Frdc Report - Project 2003/203, Sabine Daume

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

A range of experiments aimed at optimizing broodstock performance and nursery culture of greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) were undertaken in Western Australia. Factors investigated that can potentially influence broodstock performance were natal source (wild-caught or farm-grown) and broodstock diets (red algal diet or formulated diet varying in levels of an important fatty acid). Wild-caught broodstock, feeding mainly on a red seaweed diet, produced eggs with higher concentrations of an important fatty acid, arachidonic acid, whereas farm-grown broodstock, feeding on a commercial formulated diet, altered the concentration of fatty acids of the eggs. Feeding farm-grown broodstock natural diets like …

The Impact Of Host Rock Geochemistry On Bacterial Community Structure In Oligotrophic Cave Environments, Hazel A. Barton, Nicholas M. Taylor, Michael P. Kreate

KIP Articles

Despite extremely starved conditions, caves contain surprisingly diverse microbial communities. Our research is geared toward understanding what ecosystems drivers are responsible for this high diversity. To asses the effect of rock fabric and mineralogy, we carried out a comparative geomicrobiology study within Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, USA. Samples were collected from two different geologic locations within the cave: WF1 in the Massive Member of the Capitan Formation and sF88 in the calcareous siltstones of the Yates Formation. We examined the organic content at each location using liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy and analyzed microbial community structure using molecular phylogenetic analyses. In …

Chloroviruses Encode A Bifunctional Dcmp-Dctp Deaminase That Produces Two Key Intermediates In Dttp Formation, Yuanzheng Zhang, Frank Maley, Gladys F. Maley, Garry Duncan, David Dunigan, James L. Van Etten

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The chlorovirus PBCV-1, like many large double-stranded DNA-containing viruses, contains several genes that encode putative proteins involved in nucleotide biosynthesis. This report describes the characterization of the PBCV-1 dCMP deaminase, which produces dUMP, a key intermediate in the synthesis of dTTP. As predicted, the recombinant protein has dCMP deaminase activity that is activated by dCTP and inhibited by dTTP. Unexpectedly, however, the viral enzyme also has dCTP deaminase activity, producing dUTP. Typically, these two reactions are catalyzed by proteins in separate enzyme classes; to our knowledge, this is the first example of a protein having both deaminase activities. Kinetic experiments …

Water Erosion Prediction Project (Wepp): Development History, Model Capabilities, And Future Enhancements, Dennis C. Flanagan, John E. Gilley, Thomas G. Franti

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) was initiated in August 1985 to develop new‐generation water erosion prediction technology for use by federal action agencies involved in soil and water conservation and environmental planning and assessment. Developed by the USDA‐ARS as a replacement for empirically based erosion prediction technologies, the WEPP model simulates many of the physical processes important in soil erosion, including infiltration, runoff, raindrop and flow detachment, sediment transport, deposition, plant growth, and residue decomposition. The WEPP project included an extensive field experimental program conducted on cropland, rangeland, and disturbed forest sites to obtain data required to parameterize and …

Common Genome-Wide Patterns Of Transcript Accumulation Underlying The Wing Polyphenism And Polymorphism In The Pea Aphid (Acyrthosiphon Pisum), Jennifer A. Brisson, Gergory K. Davis, David L. Stern Jul 2007

Common Genome-Wide Patterns Of Transcript Accumulation Underlying The Wing Polyphenism And Polymorphism In The Pea Aphid (Acyrthosiphon Pisum), Jennifer A. Brisson, Gergory K. Davis, David L. Stern

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, exhibits several environmentally cued polyphenisms, in which discrete, alternative phenotypes are produced. At low-density, parthenogenetic females produce unwinged female progeny, but at high-density females produce progeny that develop with wings. These alternative phenotypes represent a solution to the competing demands of dispersal and reproduction. Males also develop as either winged or unwinged, but these alternatives are determined by a genetic polymorphism. Winged and unwinged males are morphologically less distinct from each other than winged and unwinged females, possibly because males experience fewer trade-offs between dispersal and reproduction. To assess whether shared physiological differences mirror …

Hepatitis C. An Update, Michael C. Safioleas, Christina P. Manti Jul 2007

Hepatitis C. An Update, Michael C. Safioleas, Christina P. Manti

Saudi Medical Journal

Hepatitis C is a long-term viral infection affecting the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus HCV. Hepatitis C can be silent for years before symptoms appear, and liver damage occurs. The hepatitis C virus is extremely infectious, which means that only a tiny amount of HCV can cause illness. Hepatitis C is a major public health problem worldwide with far-reaching implications because of the chronicity of the infection that leads to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and primary hepatocellular carcinoma.

Recent Advances In The Imaging Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma. From Ultrasound To Positron Emission Tomography Scan, Valeria Camaggi, Fabio Piscaglia, Luigi Bolondi

Saudi Medical Journal

Recent advances in imaging techniques for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) offer the possibility of investigating contrast perfusion of liver nodules in cirrhosis. It is now accepted that a non-invasive diagnosis of HCC can be established based on the vascular pattern obtained with pure blood pool contrast agents. The diagnostic pattern consists of contrast enhancement in the arterial phase, indicative of arterial hypervascularization, followed by contrast wash out in the portal and late phases, which leads the nodule to show the same, or, more specifically, a lower contrast signal than the surrounding parenchyma. Such patterns can be obtained by CT, MRI and, …

A Close Link Between Fas, P53 And Apaf-1 In Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Faris Q. Alenzi, Richard K. Wyse, Waleed G. Tamimi, Mohammad S. Bamaga, Mahmoud Lotfy Jul 2007

A Close Link Between Fas, P53 And Apaf-1 In Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Faris Q. Alenzi, Richard K. Wyse, Waleed G. Tamimi, Mohammad S. Bamaga, Mahmoud Lotfy

Saudi Medical Journal

In chronic myeloid leukemia CML proliferation is increased and resistance to apoptosis has been proposed as a mechanism accounting for myeloid cell expansion. There is still controversy on whether apoptosis plays an important role in the regulation of myelopoiesis. This study aims to investigate whether apoptosis-related proteins play a role in the evolution of CML and to identify, the relationship between Fas, p53 and apoptosis protease activating factor Apaf-1 in CML. We found increased p53 and Apaf-1 messenger ribonucleic acid mRNA in patients with CML. However, one patient, who had a p53 point mutation, showed a massive elevation of p53 …

Faculty Publications

A growing body of literature has documented a link between neighborhood context and health outcomes. However, little is known about the relationship between neighborhood context and body mass index (BMI) or whether the association between neighborhood context and BMI differs by ethnicity. This paper investigates several neighborhood characteristics as potential explanatory factors for the variation of BMI across the United States; further, this paper explores to what extent segregation and the concentration of disadvantage across neighborhoods help explain ethnic disparities in BMI. Using data geo-coded at the census tract-level and linked with individual-level data from the Third National Health and …
