Interaction Of Whey Protein With Modified Stainless Steel Surfaces, S.S. Premathilaka, M.M. Hyland, X.D. Chen, L.R. Watkins, B. Bansal
Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII
Modified stainless steel surfaces were fouled with whey protein solutions to study the deposition mechanisms and the effects of surface modification. Stainless steel samples were coated with diamond-like carbon (DLC) and titanium nitride (TiN). These surfaces are expected to present different surface chemistries to stainless steel in terms of their functional groups and hydrophobic or hydrophilic nature. Thus, it is expected that foulant-surface interactions will differ for the various fouled surfaces. The substrates were exposed to a flowing whey protein solution in a fouling rig designed to achieve laminar flow. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study the initial …

Surface Treatment For The Mitigation Of Whey Protein Fouling, W. Augustin, T. Geddert, S. Scholl
Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII
Heat transfer fouling experiments were carried out in a temperature controlled stirred vessel using aqueous solutions of whey protein concentrate in the concentration range of 3 to 3.5 wt-% at a bulk temperature of 50 °C and pH of 6. Heat transfer data were obtained from thermocouples embedded in an immersed electrical heating rod with various metal plates attached with-and-without surface treatments. Measurements included solution temperature, heating element surface temperature, and heat duty. Results are presented as fouling resistance versus time for aluminum, copper, stainless steel, electro-polished stainless steel, and surfaces coated with DLC and doped with Si , SiO, …

Experiments And Modelling Of Calcium Sulphate Precipitation Under Sensible Heating Conditions: Initial Fouling And Bulk Precipitation Rate Studies, F. Fahiminia, A. P. Watkinson, N. Epstein
Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII
Crystallization of calcium sulphate, an inverse solubility salt, on a heated surface under sensible heating conditions has been studied. A temperature measurement technique was employed to detect initial fouling rates. Fouling experiments were carried out to determine how process variables such as surface temperature and velocity affect the initial fouling rates of calcium sulphate scaling. Experimental results show that, at a given surface temperature, there exists a maximum initial fouling rate for a range of fluid velocities. Also, this maximum rate and the fluid velocity at which it occurs both increase as the surface temperature increases. These observations are all …

Fouling Mechanisms By Ab Initio Calculations Condensation Reactions On The Rutile (101) Surface And Adsorption Of Ions On The Cr2o3 Surfaces, E. Puhakka, M. Riihimäki, R.L. Keiski
Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII
Molecular modelling approach was utilized to describe detailed fouling mechanism caused by crystallization. The interest was on the heat transfer surfaces, which were manufactured from titanium and stainless steel. With ab initio calculations, the role of the surface oxide layer structure of titanium and stainless steel on fouling was investigated. The surface structure of titanium and stainless steel were assumed to consist of rutile (TiO2) and dichromium trioxide (Cr2O3), respectively. It was found that the inorganic fouling depends strongly on the oxide layer structure and the existence of hydroxyl groups on the surface. Based on the results, two mechanistically different …

Achievements And Potential Of Self-Cleaning Heat Exchangers Using Untreated Natural Seawater As A Coolant, D.G. Klaren, E.F. De Boer
Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII
The fluidized bed self-cleaning heat exchange technology has been developed in the 70s for the application in thermal desalination plants, like Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) evaporators. This paper summarizes the achievements of the Multi-Stage Flash / Fluidized Bed Evaporator (MSF/FBE) in the past, but also pays attention to its market potential today, whether or not in combination with the possible revamp of existing conventional MSF plants into a better performing configuration. Further, this paper also pays attention to the application of the self-cleaning heat exchange technology for closedloop coolers or so-called ‘mother-coolers’ for large chemical plants. Last but not least, attention …

Hitran® Wire Matrix Inserts In Fouling Applications, J.M. Ritchie, P. Droegemueller, M.J.H. Simmons
Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII
Fouling characteristics are dictated largely by the properties of the thermal and hydrodynamic boundary layers. As a result, fouling mitigation strategies must take into account the conditions in this region. hiTRAN® wire matrix tube inserts are a useful tool in altering the conditions near the tube wall, especially in the laminar and transition flow regions. This review paper considers Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements, which were employed in order to show the hydrodynamic differences between plain tubes and those containing inserts. Measurements indicate that the wall shear rate in tubes containing hiTRAN® inserts operating in …

Biofouling Control In Heat Exchangers Using High Voltage Capacitance Based Technology, R. Romo, M. M. Pitts, N. B. Handagama
Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII
Biofouling in industrial heat exchangers and piping systems is common in water from all sources. Problems generated by biofouling such as corrosion, sludge deposition and scale formation have a costly impact on industrial equipment and productivity. This paper describes an electronic approach using High Voltage Capacitance Based technology (HVCB) to control biofouling in industrial heat exchangers, focusing upon biofilm removal and the prevention of biofilm formation. Four different application case studies are presented in this paper in which the HVCB technology was used to control biofouling. The applications include an evaporative cooling wall in a greenhouse in Oracle, Arizona; a …

Assessing Causes Of Change In The Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) In The Black River, Ohio, Mark S. Lyons, Robert A. Krebs, Jeremy P. Holt, Louie J. Rundo, W. Zawiski
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Habitat destruction is believed to be the number one cause of the decline in unionid mussels. Around the world, cities, towns and agriculture alter the structure of watersheds, and the Black River in Ohio may be a typical example. We investigated the diversity and abundance of unionid mussels in this watershed and compared results to urbanization locations, to site-specific appearance of the habitat and to a 1997 fish survey, as host species are another factor important to the distribution of unionid mussels. Although shells were found for 21 species, only 11 of these species were found alive. Seven of the …

Griffithsia aestivana sp. nov. is described as an endemic from Bermuda. Vegetatively, it is most similar to G. capitata from the eastern Atlantic Ocean, but the two differ in overall size and in the tetrasporic state. Eleven other marine algal taxa are reported from Bermuda for the first time: Anadyomene howei, Struvea elegans, Cladophoropsis macromeres, Derbesia turbinata, Caulerpa racemosa var. lamourouxii, Halimeda discoidea, Chrysymenia nodulosa, Gloiocladia iyoensis, Dasya caraibica, Chondrophycus iridescens and Polysiphonia scopulorum. All except D. turbinata represent new northern limits of distribution in the North Atlantic Ocean. In addition, recent Bermuda collections of the alien Mediterranean Cystoseira …
Physiological Notch Signaling Promotes Gliogenesis In The Developing Peripheral And Central Nervous Systems, Merritt Taylor, Kelly Yeager, Sean J. Morrison
Physiological Notch Signaling Promotes Gliogenesis In The Developing Peripheral And Central Nervous Systems, Merritt Taylor, Kelly Yeager, Sean J. Morrison
Peer Reviewed Articles
Constitutive activation of the Notch pathway can promote gliogenesis by peripheral (PNS) and central (CNS) nervous system progenitors. This raises the question of whether physiological Notch signaling regulates gliogenesis in vivo. To test this, we conditionally deleted Rbpsuh (Rbpj) from mouse PNS or CNS progenitors using Wnt1-Cre or Nestin-Cre. Rbpsuh encodes a DNAbinding protein (RBP/J) that is required for canonical signaling by all Notch receptors. In most regions of the developing PNS and spinal cord, Rbpsuh deletion caused only mild defects in neurogenesis, but severe defects in gliogenesis. These resulted from defects in glial specification or differentiation, …

Inter-Dna Attraction Mediated By Divalent Counterions, Xiangyun Qiu, Kurt Andresen, Lisa W. Kwok, Jessica S. Lamb, Hye Yoon Park, Lois Pollack
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Can nonspecifically bound divalent counterions induce attraction between DNA strands? Here, we present experimental evidence demonstrating attraction between short DNA strands mediated by Mg2 ions. Solution small angle x-ray scattering data collected as a function of DNA concentration enable model independent extraction of the second virial coefficient. As the [Mg2] increases, this coefficient turns from positive to negative reflecting the transition from repulsive to attractive inter-DNA interaction. This surprising observation is corroborated by independent light scattering experiments. The dependence of the observed attraction on experimental parameters including DNA length provides valuable clues to its origin.

Host Resistance To Monilinia Vaccinii-Corymbosi In Flowers And Fruits Of Highbush Blueberry, Jeffery S. Lehman, Suzu Igarashi, Peter V. Oudemans
Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship
Monilinia vaccinii-corymbosi, the causal agent of mummy berry disease, infects blueberry flowers via the gynoecial pathway. To describe the expression of host resistance in highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), fungal growth in the styles and colonization of the locules were compared among five blueberry cultivars in a series of controlled greenhouse experiments. Styles were harvested 1 and 4 days postinoculation, and the length colonized by hyphae was determined using fluorescence microscopy. At 8 weeks after inoculation, fruit were harvested and scored for the presence of hyphae in the locules. The infection frequency of styles ranged from 0.33 to 0.71, and only …

Evolution And Phylogeny Of The Scarab Subtribe Anisopliina (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anomalini), Mary Liz Jameson, Estefania Mico, Eduardo Galante
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
The subtribe Anisopliina (Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anomalini) is associated with grasses, and its species are distributed in the Palaearctic, Oriental, Ethiopian, Nearctic and Neotropical biogeographical regions. Phylogenetic analysis of adult morphological characters was conducted to examine the monophyly and classification of the group, as well as to examine characters associated with grass pollinivory and graminivory. We review the biology, phylogeny and classification of the Anisopliina and provide an overview of each genus. The analysis of ninety-one morphological characters using parsimony does not support the monophyly of the subtribe Anisopliina. Instead, the results provide support for a group referred to here as …

Having taught students Language Arts from 2nd grade through sophomore year of high school, I have encountered numerous samples of handwriting, with great variance in their legibility. It has caused me frustration as a beginning teacher trying to decipher what has actually been written and just what the student was trying to convey to myself, as their teacher. In some cases I have graded a spelling test, marked words incorrect because I could not read the letters in the word. But then, because I felt that the student has mastered the spelling of a given word, I had the student …
