Platelet Hyperreactivity: Predictive And Intrinsic Properties., Paul F. Bray
Platelet Hyperreactivity: Predictive And Intrinsic Properties., Paul F. Bray
Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research
Platelet thrombi are central to the development of most vascular ischemic events. There is marked interindividual variation in platelet responsiveness, with some subjects displaying platelet hyperreactivity. An increasing number of reports indicate that there are laboratory measures of platelet function that predict clinical thrombotic events. Some, but not all, measures of platelet function are reproducible. Platelet hyperreactivity can be assessed with multiple stimuli in multiple assays and is more likely to be present in women and in subjects who have elevated fibrinogen levels.
Pesticide And Transformation Product Detections And Age-Dating Relations From Till And Sand Deposits, Kelly L. Warner, William S. Morrow
Pesticide And Transformation Product Detections And Age-Dating Relations From Till And Sand Deposits, Kelly L. Warner, William S. Morrow
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Pesticide and transformation product concentrations and frequencies in ground water from areas of similar crop and pesticide applications may vary substantially with differing lithologies. Pesticide analysis data for atrazine, metolachlor, alachlor, acetochlor, and cyanazine and their pesticide transformation products were collected at 69 monitoring wells in Illinois and northern Indiana to document occurrence of pesticides and their transformation products in two agricultural areas of differing lithologies, till, and sand. The till is primarily tile drained and has preferential fractured flow, whereas the sand primarily has surface water drainage and primary porosity flow. Transformation products represent most of the agricultural pesticides …

Chemomechanical Polymers As Sensors And Actuators For Biological And Medicinal Applications, Hans-Jörg Schneider, Kazuaki Kato, Robert M. Strongin
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Changes in the chemical environment can trigger large motions in chemomechanical polymers. The unique feature of such intelligent materials, mostly in the form of hydrogels, is therefore, that they serve as sensors and actuators at the same time, and do not require any measuring devices, transducers or power supplies. Until recently the most often used of these materials responded to changes in pH. Chemists are now increasingly using supramolecular recognition sites in materials, which are covalently bound to the polymer backbone. This allows one to use a nearly unlimited variety of guest (or effector) compounds in the environment for a …

Nutrient Concentrations Of Runoff During The Year Following Manure Application, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball, D. B. Marx
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Little information is currently available concerning temporal changes in nutrient transport following the addition of manure to cropland areas. This study was conducted to measure nutrient transport in runoff as affected by tillage and time following the application of beef cattle or swine manure to a site on which corn (Zea mays L.) was grown. Rainfall simulation tests were initiated 4, 32, 62, 123, and 354 days following land application. Three 30 min simulated rainfall events, separated by 24 h intervals, were conducted at an intensity of approximately 70 mm h-1. Dissolved phosphorus (DP), particulate phosphorus (PP), total phosphorus …

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a main cause of death in the world. Finding cost-effective methods to predict CAD is a major challenge in public health. In this paper, we investigate the combined effects of genetic polymorphisms and non-genetic factors on predicting the risk of CAD by applying well known classification methods, such as Bayesian networks, naïve Bayes, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, neural networks and decision trees. Our experiments show that all these classifiers are comparable in terms of accuracy, while Bayesian networks have the additional advantage of being able to provide insights into the relationships among the variables. …

A Genetic Algorithm For Cellular Manufacturing Design And Layout, Xiaodan Wu, Chao-Hsien Chu, Yunfeng Wang, Weili Yan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cellular manufacturing (CM) is an approach that can be used to enhance both flexibility and efficiency in today’s small-to-medium lot production environment. The design of a CM system (CMS) often involves three major decisions: cell formation, group layout, and group schedule. Ideally, these decisions should be addressed simultaneously in order to obtain the best results. However, due to the complexity and NP-complete nature of each decision and the limitations of traditional approaches, most researchers have only addressed these decisions sequentially or independently. In this study, a hierarchical genetic algorithm is developed to simultaneously form manufacturing cells and determine the group …
A Path To Resolution Regarding The Show Lamb Tail Docking Controversy, Jeff Goodwin, Tim Murphy, Ross Jacobson, Jim Jenson
A Path To Resolution Regarding The Show Lamb Tail Docking Controversy, Jeff Goodwin, Tim Murphy, Ross Jacobson, Jim Jenson
Journal of Extension
Short dock length in show lambs increases health risks and creates animal welfare concerns. The study reported here was conducted to 1) describe a population of lambs that were docked at the distal end of the caudal fold in terms of a linear measurement, and 2) determine the changes in tail length between docking, weaning, and market. A total of 782 lambs docked at the distal end of the caudal fold, comprised the population of lambs in the study. The results provide descriptive statistics to help guide industry leaders and Extension professionals concerned with docking standards at shows and sales.

Remote health monitoring affords the possibility of improving the quality of health care by enabling relatively inexpensive out-patient care. However, remote health monitoring raises new a problem: the potential for data explosion in health care systems. To address this problem, the remote health monitoring systems must be integrated with analysis tools that provide automated trend analysis and event detection in real time. In this paper, we propose an overview of Century, an extensible framework for analysis of large numbers of remote sensor-based medical data streams.

Education And Persuasion In Extension Forestry: Effects Of Different Numerical Information Formats, Gary L. Brase, H.E. "Hank" Stelzer
Journal of Extension
We applied to forestry information a finding from cognitive psychology: Simple frequencies (1 in 100) and percentages (1%) are perceived as clearer than absolute frequencies (e.g., 28 million Americans), even as the latter are perceived to be larger quantities. We replicated these findings for numerical information about forestry issues, although the perception of greater value for absolute frequencies worked for low proportions of references class but not for large proportions (e.g., 3 out of 4, or 75%). These results illustrate a tension between the dual goals of education and persuasion in the communication of forestry information.

Do Horizontal Propulsive Forces Influence The Nonlinear Structure Of Locomotion?, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou
Do Horizontal Propulsive Forces Influence The Nonlinear Structure Of Locomotion?, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou
Journal Articles
Background: Several investigations have suggested that changes in the nonlinear gait dynamics are related to the neural control of locomotion. However, no investigations have provided insight on how neural control of the locomotive pattern may be directly reflected in changes in the nonlinear gait dynamics. Our simulations with a passive dynamic walking model predicted that toe-off impulses that assist the forward motion of the center of mass influence the nonlinear gait dynamics. Here we tested this prediction in humans as they walked on the treadmill while the forward progression of the center of mass was assisted by a custom built …
Microbial Nitrogen Limitation Increases Decomposition, Joseph M. Craine, Carl Morrow, Noah Fierer
Microbial Nitrogen Limitation Increases Decomposition, Joseph M. Craine, Carl Morrow, Noah Fierer
Dartmouth Scholarship
With anthropogenic nutrient inputs to ecosystems increasing globally, there are long-standing, fundamental questions about the role of nutrients in the decomposition of organic matter. We tested the effects of exogenous nitrogen and phosphorus inputs on litter decomposition across a broad suite of litter and soil types. In one experiment, C mineralization was compared across a wide array of plants individually added to a single soil, while in the second, C mineralization from a single substrate was compared across 50 soils. Counter to basic stoichiometric decomposition theory, low N availability can increase litter decomposition as microbes use labile substrates to acquire …
The Economic And Political Feasibility Of Incorporating Wetlands Into A Water Quality Trading Program At The Watershed Scale , Gregory Mikota Ii
The Economic And Political Feasibility Of Incorporating Wetlands Into A Water Quality Trading Program At The Watershed Scale , Gregory Mikota Ii
All Dissertations
Incorporating the use of wetlands as a technology to enhance water quality trading programs requires the consideration of many political, economic, ecological, and legal issues. It is desirable to include wetlands as a nutrient reducing practice in certain water quality trading programs because these wetlands can provide additional benefits, beyond those of other technologies, such as carbon dioxide sequestration and increased habitat area and biodiversity. There is a great deal of interest from policymakers in extending the implementation of the United States EPA's Water Quality Trading Policy to include the use of constructed or restored wetlands. However, is the incorporation …

In Vitro Plant Regeneration From Petiole-Derived Callus And Characterization Of Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (Issr) Markers Of Amorphophallus Hewittii Alderw. (Araceae)., Douglas Charles Bertelsen
Student Work
The genus Amorphophallus contains many species that are sought after by collectors. A large proportion of these species do not reproduce quickly enough to satisfy the demand. Consequently, the establishment of micropropagation methods to increase the supply is desirable. Though several protocols for tissue culture do exist, these focus on species of agricultural importance that naturally reproduce vegetatively. This research demonstrated the successful in vitro reproduction of Amorphophallus hewittii Alderw., a species that is not known to reproduce vegetatively. The protocol avoided destroying the parent plant through use of petiole material. It concluded with direct transfer of shoots to soil, …

Pparα Is A Key Regulator Of Hepatic Fgf21, Thomas Lundasen, Mary Hunt, Lisa-Marie Nilsson, Sabysashi Sanyal, Bo Angelin, Stefan Alexson, Mats Rudling
Articles
The metabolic regulator fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) has antidiabetic properties in animal models of diabetes and obesity. Using quantitative RT-PCR, we here show that the hepatic gene expression of FGF21 is regulated by the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha). Fasting or treatment of mice with the PPARalpha agonist Wy-14,643 induced FGF21 mRNA by 10-fold and 8-fold, respectively. In contrast, FGF21 mRNA was low in PPARalpha deficient mice, and fasting or treatment with Wy-14,643 did not induce FGF21. Obese ob/ob mice, known to have increased PPARalpha levels, displayed 12-fold increased hepatic FGF21 mRNA levels. The potential importance of PPARalpha for …

Physics Faculty Research and Publications
The X-ray crystal structure of the Co(II)-loaded form of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica ([CoCo(AAP)]) was solved to 2.2 Å resolution. [CoCo(AAP)] folds into an α/β globular domain with a twisted β-sheet hydrophobic core sandwiched between α-helices, identical to [ZnZn(AAP)]. Co(II) binding to AAP does not introduce any major conformational changes to the overall protein structure and the amino acid residues ligated to the dicobalt(II) cluster in [CoCo(AAP)] are the same as those in the native Zn(II)-loaded structure with only minor perturbations in bond lengths. The Co(II)–Co(II) distance is 3.3 Å. Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) coordinates to the dinuclear Co(II) active site …

Urban Middle School Students’ Perceptions Of Math And Science Teachers’ Caring Behaviors And Student’S Self Reports Of Academic Competence, Brenda Rhyne
Theses
This research examines urban middle school students' perceptions of their math and science teachers' behaviors. Specific caring behaviors (challenging questions, encouragement and praise, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly, and controlling -- which refer to teacher's expectations for classroom behavior) were evaluated by 101 students (72 girls and 29 boys) in grades 7, 8, and 9 by means of a survey instrument. Research findings support earlier investigations confirming that boys and girls interpret teacher friendliness differently. However, both male and female students reported similar perceptions of their teachers' behaviors with respect to praise, non-verbal support, and controlling. In addition, a strong …

Human Body Temperature (37°C) Increases The Expression Of Iron, Carbohydrate, And Amino Acid Utilization Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Amy J. Malhowski, Sarah Young
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Using DNA microarrays, we identified 126 genes in Escherichia coli K-12 whose expression is increased at human body temperature (37°C) compared to growth at 23°C. Genes involved in the uptake and utilization of amino acids, carbohydrates, and iron dominated the list, supporting a model in which temperature serves as a host cue to increase expression of bacterial genes needed for growth. Using quantitative real-time PCR, we investigated the thermoregulatory response for representative genes in each of these three categories (hisJ, cysP, srlE, garP, fes, and cirA), along with the fimbrial gene papB. Increased expression at 37°C compared to 23°C was …

Marine Paleoecology Of The Fivemile Member Of The Hinton Formation, Upper Mississippian, West Virginia And Virginia, Thomas R. Cawthern
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Fivemile and Eads Mill members of the upper part of the Hinton Formation are two significant marine zones that occur within the Mauch Chunk Group in southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia.;Multivariate analyses of binary fossil data for the Fivemile Member were performed in order to determine any underlying paleoecologic signals. Analyses of the data sets indicate that this member is dominated by a euryhaline fauna in four of the five locations studied. Euryhaline fauna characteristic of the Fivemile Member include the brachiopod Lingula, the bivalves Modiolus and Septimyalina, and ostracods. The geographic distribution and richness of these dominant …
Post-Fledging Ecology And Survival Of Neotropical Migratory Songbirds On A Managed Appalachian Forest, Tim A. Dellinger
Post-Fledging Ecology And Survival Of Neotropical Migratory Songbirds On A Managed Appalachian Forest, Tim A. Dellinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
During the post-fledging period, some juvenile songbirds appear to require early successional habitats at some level, suggesting that disturbance (whether natural or anthropogenic) in the landscape is important. Previous studies of juvenile Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) have found them in early successional areas in which adults do not nest. My objective was to determine how juvenile Wood Thrushes used areas harvested through various silvicultural techniques within a forested landscape. I examined settled areas, habitat use, survival, and daily movements of 55 radio-tagged juvenile Wood Thrushes on a managed forest in the central Appalachian mountains of West Virginia during 2004 to …
Stream Fish Populations In A Watershed Scale Context For Fish Community Dynamics In Central Appalachian Watersheds, Zina Hense
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study we first conducted a three pass removal study to estimate electrofishing capture probabilities for species and size classes of fish common in the Cheat River and Tygart River watersheds of West Virginia. We then calculated models of capture probabilities for 12 species that were divided into two size classes based on site-specific physico-chemical variables. We took these capture probability models and applied them to a watershed scale study in the Cheat River and Tygart Valley River watersheds of West Virginia. We sampled across the two watersheds with the objective of quantifying and relating juvenile and adult distributions …
