Art And The Clinical Social Worker, Lucy Goldstein Aug 2007

Art And The Clinical Social Worker, Lucy Goldstein

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The current social work literature implores clinicians to create self-care practices to help reduce their levels of occupational stress. Literature from a variety of fields points to the healing capabilities of the art making process, yet there is a dearth of empirical evidence linking the two. This study examines whether self-directed art making can reduce stress for the clinical social worker. Ten clinical social workers who make art either as a hobby or as a dual career were interviewed to determine how their art making practice impacts their clinical work and whether or not art making reduces their occupational stress …

Putting The Body Back In Social Work : How Social Workers Experience And Differ In Levels Of Personal Body Awareness, Lauren Nancarrow Clarke

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to determine whether or not and if so, to what degree social workers are aware of their personal body awareness in sessions with clients. The corollary question was whether or not those with higher reported body awareness would have similar socio-demographic indicators, environmental factors, or clientele to each other. Based on current literature, it was hypothesized that social workers in general would report a low body awareness and those reporting a higher body awareness would have similar correlates of individual factors. Smith School for Social Work graduates and current students were solicited for participation in an …

Environmental Kuznets Curve: Some Econometric Analyses., Soumyananda Dinda Dr. Aug 2007

Environmental Kuznets Curve: Some Econometric Analyses., Soumyananda Dinda Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation explores some issues of environmental economics and development. A concept crystallizing in the development and environmental economics literature is the notion that socioeconomic and environmental measures follow predictable paths associated with growing per capita income. In this context, the nature of relationship between economic development and environmental quality has become the focus of increasing attention. The issue of whether environmental degradation increases monotonically, decreases monotonically, or at first increases and then declines along a country’s development path, has critical implications for policy. Whilst development through industrialization brings higher incomes and well-being, this seems to act as a magnifier …

Time-Dependent Performance Comparison Of Stochastic Optimization Algorithms, David Shilane, Jarno Martikainen, Seppo Ovaska Aug 2007

Time-Dependent Performance Comparison Of Stochastic Optimization Algorithms, David Shilane, Jarno Martikainen, Seppo Ovaska

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This paper proposes a statistical methodology for comparing the performance of stochastic optimization algorithms that iteratively generate candidate optima. The fundamental data structure of the results of these algorithms is a time series. Algorithmic differences may be assessed through a procedure of statistical sampling and multiple hypothesis testing of time series data. Shilane et al. propose a general framework for performance comparison of stochastic optimization algorithms that result in a single candidate optimum. This project seeks to extend this framework to assess performance in time series data structures. The proposed methodology analyzes empirical data to determine the generation intervals in …
