The Dysfunctional Progeny Of Eugenics: Autonomy Gone Awol, Matthew D. Martin Iii Oct 2007

The Dysfunctional Progeny Of Eugenics: Autonomy Gone Awol, Matthew D. Martin Iii

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the ethical and legal implications of state-mandated sterilization, tracing its evolution from eugenic practices in the early 20th century to modern forms of reproductive control. It argues that such policies, whether justified by eugenics or population control, consistently violate human rights and raise significant moral concerns. The analysis critiques the Supreme Court's decision in Buck v. Bell as a landmark example of judicial endorsement of pseudoscientific discrimination, while also exploring contemporary issues like prenatal genetic testing and coercive family planning policies.

Growth Environment And Sex Differences In Lipids, Bodyshape And Diabetes Risk, Mary Schooling, Tai Hing Lam, G. Neil Thomas, Benjamin J. Cowling, Michelle Heys, Edward D. Janus, Gabriel M. Leung

Publications and Research

Background
Sex differences in lipids and body shape, but not diabetes, increase at puberty. Hong Kong Chinese are mainly first or second generation migrants from China, who have shared an economically developed environment for years, but grew up in very different environments in Hong Kong or contemporaneously undeveloped Guangdong, China. We assessed if environment during growth had sex-specific associations with lipids and body shape, but not diabetes.

Methodology and Principal Findings
We used multivariable regression in a population-based cross-sectional study, undertaken from 1994 to 1996, of 2537 Hong Kong Chinese residents aged 25 to 74 years with clinical measurements of …

Leadership For Today Manageable Meetings, Karla Trautman Oct 2007

Leadership For Today Manageable Meetings, Karla Trautman

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

At one time or another, we have all answered the call to civic duty by serving on a committee or advisory board. For some, the experience has been productive and energizing. For others, the experience has been painful, marked by long meetings that are unorganized and frustrating. Good meetings don’t just happen; they require thoughtful planning and implementation. In fact, meeting quality is often a critical component used in measuring the effectiveness of a particular group. Potential members are often aware of the “meeting history” that a particular group has—thus influencing their willingness to become members. The ability to organize …

Instrumentation And Metrology For Single Rna Counting In Biological Complexes Or Nanoparticles By A Single-Molecule Dual-View System, Hui Zhang, Dan Shu, Faqing Huang, Peixuan Guo Oct 2007

Instrumentation And Metrology For Single Rna Counting In Biological Complexes Or Nanoparticles By A Single-Molecule Dual-View System, Hui Zhang, Dan Shu, Faqing Huang, Peixuan Guo

Faculty Publications

Limited by the spatial resolution of optical microscopy, direct detection or counting of single components in biological complexes or nanoparticles is challenging, especially for RNA, which is conformationally versatile and structurally flexible. We report here the assembly of a customized single-molecule dual-viewing total internal reflection fluorescence imaging system for direct counting of RNA building blocks. The RNA molecules were labeled with a single fluorophore by in vitro transcription in the presence of a fluorescent AMP. Precise calculation of identical or mixed pRNA building blocks of one, two, three, or six copies within the bacteriophage phi29 DNA packaging motor or other …

The Gender Trap: Flexible Work In Corporate Legal Practice, Margaret Thornton, Joanne Bagust Oct 2007

The Gender Trap: Flexible Work In Corporate Legal Practice, Margaret Thornton, Joanne Bagust

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Despite the fact that women comprise well over 50 per cent of law graduates in many parts of the world, women lawyers continue to be clustered disproportionately in the lower echelons of the profession. This paper considers the role of flexible work as a gender equity strategy and is illuminated by interviews with lawyers in elite corporate firms in Australia. It is argued that far from being a panacea, flexible work is being invoked to confine women to subordinate roles and to restrict access to partnerships. Not only is there a residual suspicion of the feminine in positions of authority …

Glycaemic Index, Glycaemic Load And Ovarian Cancer Risk: A Prospective Cohort Study, Stephanie A. Navarro Silvera, Meera Jain, Geoffrey R. Howe, Anthony B. Miller, Thomas E. Rohan Oct 2007

Glycaemic Index, Glycaemic Load And Ovarian Cancer Risk: A Prospective Cohort Study, Stephanie A. Navarro Silvera, Meera Jain, Geoffrey R. Howe, Anthony B. Miller, Thomas E. Rohan

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Background

There is some evidence that plasma insulin levels might influence ovarian cancer risk. The glycaemic index (GI) and glycaemic load (GL) are measures that allow the carbohydrate content of individual foods to be classified according to their postprandial glycaemic effects and hence their effects on circulating insulin levels. Therefore, we examined ovarian cancer risk in association with GI and GL, and intake of dietary carbohydrate and sugar.

Methods

The study was conducted in a prospective cohort of 49 613 Canadian women enrolled in the National Breast Screening Study (NBSS) who completed a self-administered food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) between 1980 and …

Thugs And Drugs: The Terrorists And Drug Networks Of The Islamic Movement Of Uzbekistan, Ian Nash Oct 2007

Thugs And Drugs: The Terrorists And Drug Networks Of The Islamic Movement Of Uzbekistan, Ian Nash

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Recent analyses of terrorist groups reveal their dependency on complex logistical, financial, and operational relationships with other groups. Advantaged by the technological advancements of the last two decades, many terrorist and criminal organizations are now linked through complicated networks. Therefore, experts dedicated to uncovering and unraveling terrorist strategy, can easily get lost in the scattered patterns of today’s terrorism. A web-like structure allows for flexible, though well-connected leadership, and widespread recruitment opportunity. One recent terrorist group that has benefited from network organization is the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU). The IMU was a formidable group because of its experienced and …

Writing The World: Ursula K. Le Guin And Margaret Atwood’S Literary Contributions To Ecofeminism, Melissa Messer Oct 2007

Writing The World: Ursula K. Le Guin And Margaret Atwood’S Literary Contributions To Ecofeminism, Melissa Messer

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Along with the philosophical writings of ecofeminism’s greatest proponents and critics, the growth of ecofeminist philosophy has relied heavily on fiction writers. The term ecofeminism was coined in 1975, and the following year ecofeminism found fertile ground for exploration and growth in March Peircy’s science fiction novel, Woman on the Edge of Time (1976). The social, academic, and literary trends leading up to the emergence of ecofeminism, however, began well before 1975. Both Ursula K. Le Guin and Margaret Atwood are speculative fiction authors whose work before and after 1975 examines important ecofeminist topics and contributes to the growth of …

Analysis Of Humfabp2 As A Polymorphic Human Genetic Marker In The Turkish Population., Fatma Y. Beyaztas, Ilhan Sezgin, Eylem Gul, Zerrin Erkol

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVES: To examine the allele frequencies of HumFABP2 locus in 155 individuals from different regions of Turkey. METHODS: The study was carried out in Cumhuriyet University Hospital, Sivas, Turkey, between March and June 2006. The allele and genotype frequencies for HumFABP2 were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the manufacturer9s recommended protocol, and using the commercially available Macherey-Nagel DNA isolation kit. The PCR amplification was carried out in a Perkin-Elmer GeneAmp PCR System 9600 thermal cycler following the manufacturer9s recommendations. The allele frequencies in the Turkish population was computed, and the heterozygote rate was calculated. RESULTS: In this population …

Psoda: Better Tasting And Less Filling Than Paup, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Mark Ebbert, Quinn O. Snell

Faculty Publications

PSODA is an open-source phylogenetic search application that implements traditional parsimony and likelihood search techniques as well as advanced search algorithms. PSODA is compatible with PAUP and the search algorithms are competitive with those in PAUP. PSODA also adds a basic scripting language to the PAUP block, making it possible to easily create advanced meta-searches. Additionally, PSODA provides a user-friendly GUI with real-time graphing visualizations and phylogeny viewer, and a multiple sequence alignment algorithm PSODA is freely available from the PSODA web site: http://csl.cs.byu.edu/psoda.

Using Parsimony To Guide Maximum Likelihood Searches, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Timothy O'Connor, Quinn O. Snell, Kenneth Sundberg Oct 2007

Using Parsimony To Guide Maximum Likelihood Searches, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Timothy O'Connor, Quinn O. Snell, Kenneth Sundberg

Faculty Publications

The performance of maximum likelihood searches can be boosted by using the most parsimonious tree as a starting point for the search. The time spent in performing the parsimony search to find this starting tree is insignificant compared to the time spent in the maximum likelihood search, leading to an overall gain in search time. These parsimony boosted maximum likelihood searches lead to topologies with scores statisitically similar to the unboosted searches, but in less time.

Has India Addressed Its Farmers' Woes? A Story Of Plant Protection Issues, Srividhya Ragavan, Jamie Mayer O'Shields Oct 2007

Has India Addressed Its Farmers' Woes? A Story Of Plant Protection Issues, Srividhya Ragavan, Jamie Mayer O'Shields

Faculty Scholarship

The paper examines issues relating to establishing breeders rights in developing nations by taking India as an example. At the outset, the paper examines the international obligations relating to protecting plant breeder’s rights by examining the requirements under Article 27.3 of the TRIPS agreement. In doing so, the paper examines analyzes what amounts to an effective sui generis system as required under TRIPS.

Further, the paper analyzes the constituents of the models currently touted by developed nations and outlined under the Union for Plant Variety Protection (UPOV, 1991) to determine the model’s ability to fulfill the TRIPS requirement. In determining …
