Review Of Northwood’S Stormwater Management Regulations Northwood, New Hampshire, Stone Environmental, Inc.

PREP Reports & Publications

This project was funded through a grant from the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) of the University of New Hampshire to assist the Town of Northwood in a review of their stormwater management regulations. The revisions suggested in Northwood’s Development Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations, and Site Plan Review Regulations are intended to improve stormwater management in Northwood for the benefit of the community and the protection of its water resources and wetlands. Early successional birds have declined in the northeastern United States due to the regeneration of forest on abandoned farm fields and the suppression of natural disturbances that once provided appropriate habitat. These species have become increasingly dependent on early successional habitats generated by such activities as timber harvesting. Recent approaches of timber harvesting, which range from single-tree harvesting to clearcutting, create forest openings of different sizes and configurations embedded in landscapes with different land use patterns. Zebrafish Acid-Sensing Ion Channel (Asic) 4, Characterization Of Homo- And Heteromeric Channels, And Identification Of Regions Important For Activation By H+, Xuanmao Chen, Georg Polleichtner, Ivan Kadurin, Stefan Grunder

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

There are four genes for acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) in the genome of mammalian species. Whereas ASIC1 to ASIC3 form functional H+-gated Na+ channels, ASIC4 is not gated by H+, and its function is unknown. Zebrafish has two ASIC4 paralogs: zASIC4.1 and zASIC4.2. Whereas zASIC4.1 is gated by extracellular H+, zASIC4.2 is not. This differential response to H+ makes zASIC4 paralogs a good model to study the properties of this ion channel. In this study, we found that surface expression of homomeric zASIC4.2 is higher than that of zASIC4.1. Surface expression of zASIC4.1 was much increased by formation of heteromeric …

A Bayesian Image Analysis Of The Change In Tumor/Brain Contrast Uptake Induced By Radiation Via Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Xiaoxi Zhang, Tim Johnson, Roderick J.A. Little

This work is motivated by a pilot study on the change in tumor/brain contrast uptake induced by radiation via quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The results inform the optimal timing of administering chemotherapy in the context of radiotherapy. A noticeable feature of the data is spatial heterogeneity. The tumor is physiologically and pathologically distinct from surrounding healthy tissue. Also, the tumor itself is usually highly heterogeneous. We employ a Gaussian Hidden Markov Random Field model that respects the above features. The model introduces a latent layer of discrete labels from an Markov Random Field (MRF) governed by a spatial regularization parameter. …

Evidence For A Dinuclear Active Site In The Metallo-Β-Lactamase Bcii With Substoichiometric Co(Ii): A New Model For Uptake, Leticia L. Llarrull, Mariana F. Tioni, Jason M. Kowalski, Brian Bennett, Alejandro J. Vila

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Metallo-β-lactamases are zinc-dependent enzymes that constitute one of the main resistance mechanisms to β-lactam antibiotics. Metallo-β-lactamases have been characterized both in mono- and dimetallic forms. Despite many studies, the role of each metal binding site in substrate binding and catalysis is still unclear. This is mostly due to the difficulties in assessing the metal content and site occupancy in solution. For this reason, Co(II) has been utilized as a useful probe of the active site structure. We have employed UV-visible, EPR, and NMR spectroscopy to study Co(II) binding to the metallo-β-lactamase BcII from Bacillus cereus. The spectroscopic features were …

A Non-Circadian Role For Clock-Genes In Sleep Homeostasis: A Strain Comparison, Paul Franken, Ryan Thomason, H. Craig Heller, Bruce F. O'Hara

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that the expression of circadian clock-genes increases in the cerebral cortex after sleep deprivation (SD) and that the sleep rebound following SD is attenuated in mice deficient for one or more clock-genes. We hypothesized that besides generating circadian rhythms, clock-genes also play a role in the homeostatic regulation of sleep. Here we follow the time course of the forebrain changes in the expression of the clock-genes period (per)-1, per2, and of the clock-controlled gene albumin D-binding protein (dbp) during a 6 h SD and subsequent recovery sleep in three inbred strains of mice for which …
