This dissertation explores four narrative texts written about AIDS/HIV and evaluates each one by applying Kenneth Burke's redemption drama, consisting of guilt, purification, and redemption. The methodology is a close textual analysis using rhetorical analysis as a way to highlight the use of the redemption drama in language. The first chapter explores the history of AIDS/HIV and makes the argument for using Burke's rhetorical approach. The second chapter briefly highlights the plot of the four narratives and provides background information and context for each book. The third chapter applies the concept of guilt to all four narratives. The fourth chapter …

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) expressed by cells of the immune system play a central role in the generation of immune responses against pathogens. Following TLR ligation, both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators are produced in order to elicit an immune response that controls the microbial infection while limiting tissue damage. Among these mediators, the proinflammatory cytokine IL-12 and the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 are known to play major roles. Here, we show that in vitro or in vivo stimulation with flagellin, the TLR5 ligand, does not result in IL-10 production. Furthermore flagellin inhibits IL-10 production by other specific TLR ligands at the protein …

Bullying is a complex behavior that can cause academic and social problems for students and can contribute to a negative school climate. Students who feel isolated or do not feel connected to their school may experience similar risks to those who are victimized by peers. Recent school violence incidents have led to an increase in bullying behavior research. When a patient is exposed surgical stress, the endocrine system secretes hormones in response to that stress. These hormones further activate the immune system to release cytokines and other acute phase reactions. These processes are supposed to protect the body by upregulating the innate immune system and producing an inflammatory response that acts to protect and heal. However, uncontrolled surgical stress may cause a weaker immune response that may lead to delayed wound healing. For over half of a century, social and behavioral scientists have been investigating the construct of psychopathy. Even so, psychopathy is still a highly misunderstood personality construct. Even though it has been estimated that psychopaths make up only about 1% of the general population, they are believed to consist of 15-25% of the prison population (Hare, 1996). However, not all psychopaths are in prison. Psychopaths can also be found in such fields as the legal profession, the business world and in politics (Babiak, 1995). Graduate Students/Mothers Negotiating Academia And Family Life: Discourses, Experiences, And Alternatives, Shirlan A. Williams

This study examines the experiences and perceptions of graduate students who are mothers. Based on discourse analysis, one-on-one interviews, and focus groups, this study argues that institutional discourses and practices place graduate students who are mothers in untenable and irreconcilable positions between "mom" and "student," between "family" and "the academy," between "self" and "success." These irreconcilable differences are created in discourse, enacted in institutional policies, and lived by the participants. The study offers action-based alternatives to the status quo policies of the university based on the self-described needs of these women. It reveals that support from all fronts--the home, the …

The NK cell is a large granular lymphocyte that plays a key role in protecting the body against numerous pathogens including parasites, intracellular bacteria, viral infections, as well as showing anti-tumor activity and playing a role in the rejection of allogeneic BM. This study was designed to evaluate a parent training curriculum: Helping Our Toddlers Developing Our Children's Skills (HOT DOCS© ) using archival data collected between August 2006 and April 2007. The evaluation studied the impact of specific components of the parent training program on both participants' knowledge and attitudes and their perceptions of targeted children's behavior. One-hundred-forty-six caregivers of children between the ages of 14 months and ten years of age participated in the parent training program and were included in the analyses. Arginine kinase catalyzes the reversible phosphorylation of arginine using ATP. This phosphotransferase is found throughout invertebrate species; whereas a homologous enzyme, creatine kinase, is found in both vertebrate and invertebrate species. Arginine kinases are found as monomers of 40 kDa or 80 kDa and dimers of 80 kDa while creatine kinases are found as dimers of 80 kDa, monomers of 150 kDa, or octamers of 320 kDa. The significance or advantage of the dimeric state or various quaternary structures is still not understood for this family of enzymes. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a family of enzymes whose functions have been overwhelmingly associated with gene expression and chromatin dynamics by modifying the histone tails. In recent years, intensive studies have demonstrated that many non-histone proteins also could serve as substrates for HDACs. And their functions and activities have been found to be regulated by posttranslational acetylation on the ε-amino group of lysines. Here, we report that two DNA repair factors including NBS1 (Nijmegen breakage syndrome 1) and ATDC (Ataxia-Telangiectasia Group D Complementing) are acetylated proteins. In this thesis, a systematic study has been carried out on the synthesis, characterization and applications of microcrystalline diamond (MCD) and nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) thin films deposited by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Firstly, an overview of diamond films synthesized from carbon-containing gas plasmas is presented. A parameter study was performed to grow diamond thin films. The transition from micro- to nanocrystallinity of diamond grains was achieved by controlling the Ar/Hydrogen gas ratio. The nanocrystallinity is the result of a new growth mechanism which involves the insertion of carbon dimmer into carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds. Secondly, characterization of diamond …

Self-control and various elements comprising this construct have received much credit over the years as it has been able to account for a large amount of variance in delinquency rates. Some research has suggested that individual difference factors (e.g., self-control) can overwhelm external factors (e.g., neighborhoods; see Loeber & Wikström, 2000). Others have found that social influences (e.g., employment; see Wright, et al, 2001) have more pronounced effects for those most at-risk. Dendritic cells (DCs) are a migratory group of bone-marrow-derived leukocytes specialized for uptake, transport, processing and presentation of antigens to T cells. Exposure of DCs to bacterial pathogens can induce DC maturation characterized by cytokine production, up-regulation of co-stimulatory molecules and an increased ability to activate T cells. DCs have the ability to restrict growth of L. pneumophila (Lp), an intracellular Gram-negative bacillus that causes a severe form of pneumonia known as Legionnaires' disease, in murine ER-derived organelles (121) but replicate in human DCs (145). Even in human cells, however, lysis of the DCs does not occur for at least …

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors detect chemical and biological species by monitoring the shifts in frequency of surface acoustic waves generated on piezoelectric substrates. Incorporation of nanomaterials having increased surface area as sensing layer have been effective in improving the sensitivity as well as miniaturization of SAW sensors. Selectivity, sensitivity and speed of response are the three primary aspects for any type of sensor. This study examined whether hiring recommendations based on thin slices of a structured interview were associated with recommendations based on the interview in its entirety. After viewing 12 seconds of silent interviewee behavior, participants made hiring recommendations that were significantly correlated with those produced by individuals viewing a still-frame of the interview and the entire interview. In an effort to determine what sources of information participants were using to arrive at their recommendations, nonverbal behaviors were examined in detail. Applicants who appeared attentive, not anxious, competent, confident, dominant, optimistic, and professional were more likely to receive positive hiring recommendations than …

This study revealed that the mite resistance in L. hirsutum is heritable in L. esculentum and therefore can be utilized to improve tomato production by breeding mite resistant varieties. Glandular trichomes type IV may be responsible for high levels of resistance in accession LA 2204 to T. evansi. The study was to initiate inter-specific crosses between Lycopersicon hirsutum f glabratum C.H. Mull accession LA 2204 and the cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. variety "Money Maker", and evaluate their resistance to tobacco spider mite Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard. This paper presents an econometric analysis of the influence of soil fertility status on productivity and resource use in rice production utilizing survey data from 21 villages in three agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh. Detailed crop husbandry input-output data were collected from 380 paddy rice (Oryza sativa) farmers. Data collected included fertilizer, pesticide, labour, animal power services, irrigation, farm capital assets and rice yield. The soil fertility status in each region was determined by analysis of soil organic carbon, available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentration. This essay first addresses the ethical and evidentiary standards for the emerging use of high-tech computer-generated animations and computer-assisted closing arguments. Next, this essay considers the same questions within the context of forensic DNA evidence. Third, this essay considers the ethics of prosecutors' use of such evidence and the consequences for the misuse of this evidence. Finally, this essay suggests remedies to ethical problems facing prosecutors in their use of this kind of evidence.

Two events illustrate the involvement of legislators in the manufacture and mplification of this heuristic mistake. Lozenge is a transcription factor. It is a member of the Runx1 homology group that includes Runt, Acute Myeloid Leukemia1, and Core Binding Factor alpha1. Expressed in the fruit fly Drosophila, Lozenge contributes to the determination of neuronal and non-neuronal cells by regulating the expression of many fate-determining transcription factors. In addition to Lozenge expression in wide varieties of tissues, it also participates in the pattern formation and specification of the photoreceptors R1/R6 and R7 and cones and pigment cells of the fly eye. Over the past decade, the WTO devoted considerable attention to this issue and included it on the agenda of the Doha Round. This article examines popular dissatisfaction with the proportionality standard in self-defense law, which holds that the prevention of harm cannot be achieved by causing harm that is disproportionate. Legal elites, such as prosecutors, judges, and legal scholars, have long championed versions of this standard. But there is an increasingly widespread movement in the United States and Europe to modify elite notions of proportionality.

Common to these movements is the desire to replace complicated balancing tests with clearer rules, which would limit the discretion of prosecutors and judges, and to permit use of deadly force against attackers in more situations. Fueling …

Alasdair MacIntyre, Michael Sandel and other critics have argued that liberalism is living off the borrowed capital of Western civilization. That is, to the extent that liberalism requires neutrality among theories of the good, the state cannot ensure that the generation of values - of strong families, hard workers, honest people, engaged citizens, and devout church members - necessary to liberalism itself will occur. William Galston responded to this critique by arguing that liberalism does not require neutrality toward the creation of values central to liberalism itself.
