The titles in this annotated reading list are based on a curriculum study that anaIyzed the reading lists from the syllabi of the women's studies courses taught at ten colleges and universities in Colorado, during the 1999-2000 academic years. Inclusion in the list was based on the frequency that the title appeared across the curriculum. Optimizing A Communication System By Neural Circuits: The Magic Number 4 And Golden Ratio, Bo Deng

For a new class of circuit models of neurons we demonstrate here that an artificial but robust and efficient communication system can be constructed using one neural circuit as an encoder/transmitter and another as a receiver/decoder, for which metastable-plastic spike-bursts with the minimal bursting periods are used for its alphabet. We also demonstrate that the spike-bursting alphabet is frequency-modulated onto the encoder’s ion pump current as the signal. We further demonstrate that for this spike-excitation-encoding-decoding (SEED) system, the quadrary alphabet tends to give the maximal transmission rate for all possible sources. For a new class of circuit models for single neurons we demonstrate here that if the circuits’ plastic spike-bursts are used for memory alphabet, then using the first 10 bases tend to maximize the amount of information that can be retrieved from and stored into the circuits in a unit time.

Resistance categories (antibiosis and tolerance) of four sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) hybrids to biotype I greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), were determined in environmental growth chamber and field studies. Greenbug weight and fecundity were lower on ‘Cargill 607E’ compared with ‘Cargill 797’. Percentage of leaf damage area was significantly less on two resistant hybrids (Cargill 607E and Cargill 797) after a 14-d greenbug feeding period compared to two susceptible hybrids (‘Golden Harvest 510B’ and Garst 5715). In growth chamber studies on sorghum seedlings, ‘Cargill 607E’ and ‘Cargill 797’ reduced greenbug weight significantly compared with ‘Golden Harvest 510B’ and ‘Garst …

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the genetic similarity and structure of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), populations associated with maize and cotton crops in Brazil using amplified fragment length polymorphisms. Mean genetic similarity among populations was 0.45. The unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean analysis dendrograms did not separate populations of S. frugiperda into clusters related to the host plant in which the insects were collected. No genetic variation was observed among maize and cotton populations of S. frugiperda, suggesting that the same populations are injuring both crops in Brazil. This research validates …

Lady beetles are some of the most noticeable and popular insects found in the garden and on the farm. This publication will help the farmer, gardener, or amateur naturalist to better understand and identify lady beetles found in Nebraska.
Lady beetles are in the family Caccinellidae, of which nearly all members are predators. Most lady beetles are recognizable by their black-on-red spotted pattern and hemispherical shape.

We examined the physiological and biochemical responses of resistant (“Halt” and “Prairie Red”) and susceptible (“TAM 107”) wheat, Triticum aestivum L., to injury by the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko). Photosynthetic capacity was evaluated by measuring assimilation/ internal CO2 (A/Ci) curves, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll, and nonstructural carbohydrate content. Total protein and peroxidase specific activity also were determined. No significant differences were detected in chlorophyll concentration between aphid-infested and control TAM107 plants. The aphid-infested resistant cultivars had similar or significantly higher chlorophyll concentrations compared with their respective control plants. A survey of hymenopteran and dipteran parasitoids of the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) larvae was conducted to determine their occurrence and parasitism rates in Western Chiapas, Mexico. 1247 FAW larvae were collected from whorl-stage corn cornfields in 21 locations in the region called ‘‘La Frailesca’’ in Chiapas, Mexico during the summer of 2002; 251 larvae produced parasitoids for an overall parasitism rate of 20.1%. Five braconids were recovered from FAW larvae, Rogas vaughani Muesebeck, R. laphygmae Viereck, Chelonus insularis Cresson, C. cautus Cresson, and Glyptapanteles militaris Walsh. Over the years many research collections of biological specimen have been developed for research in biological sciences. Number of specimens in some of these collections can be as high as several millions. There is a move to convert these physical specimens into digital images. This research is motivated by the need to develop techniques to mine useful information from these large collections of specimen images. Dissociation of medial-edge epithelium (MEE) during palate development is essential for mediating correct craniofacial morphogenesis. This phenomenon is initiated by TGFβ3 upon adherence of opposing palatal shelves, because loss of E-cadherin causes the MEE seam to break into small epithelial islands. To investigate the molecular mechanisms that cause this E-cadherin loss, we isolated and cultured murine embryonic primary MEE cells from adhered or non-adhered palates. Here, we provide the first evidence that lymphoid enhancer factor 1 (LEF1), when functionally activated by phosphorylated Smad2 (Smad2- P) and Smad4 (rather than β-catenin), binds with the promoter of the E-cadherin gene to repress …

Two-dimensional analytical models of pumping induced drawdown and stream depletion account for the streambed properties and stream geometry. Using data from three pumping tests performed under various hydrologic conditions, the following hypotheses were tested: (1) a partially penetrating stream at a certain distance from the pumping well can be represented by the streambed leakage term in the analytical models; (2) in the streambed leakage term, the streambed conductance coefficient λ=(WK′)/m′ accounts for the average stream width W, the streambed thickness m′, and hydraulic conductivity K′.
