Diabetes is one of most afflicting diseases in society which is caused by the inability of the body to appropriately use insulin to balance sugar levels. Type 1 diabetics require monitoring of their glucose levels to ensure a normal glucose level is maintained between 90 and 130 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). Unfortunately, current methods of monitoring are based on invasive and painful sampling of the blood. It was imperative that noninvasive and painless methods of monitoring glucose should be explored. A proven noninvasive technique utilizing infrared light to detect the fluctuations in the heart rate was used to determine if …

The intention of my critical discourse is to redefine the knowledge of the feminine that Western tradition, through “master narratives,” silenced, subverted, and deferred. My guidelines were drawn from the deconstruction of philosophical works by Jacques Derrida and redefined the unique circle of “Being and beings” to be not just God and man, but God, Goddess, and Human, the Goddess being the original feminine. I discovered the feminine beginning, through archaeomythologists Gimbutas, Dever, and Davis-Kimball, with the unearthing of female figurines, temple models, and warrior priestesses. Antimicrobial peptides act against bacteria by binding non-specifically and disrupting their outer membrane. LL-37 is the only member of the cathelicidin group of antimicrobial peptides present in humans and shows a broad range of antimicrobial activity. RK-21 is a fragment of human antimicrobial peptide LL-37, which is α-helical, cationic and amphipathic in nature. RK-21 displays similar antimicrobial activity to LL- 37. In order to understand the mechanism of lipid bilayer disruption, fluorine-labeled antimicrobial peptide RK-21 was chemically synthesized and 19F-NMR studies were done. Occupational therapy has evolved from its early inception in diversional therapy to incorporate technologically advanced modalities into the professional domain. Over the last thirty years the profession has increasingly incorporated physical agent modalities (PAMs) into the treatment process. Throughout this process there has been both opposition and support for the inclusion of PAMs in occupational therapy. There are concerns from both sides regarding the proper training of therapists in the use of PAMs, how competency should be assessed, who is responsible for ensuring competency, and the ethical concerns with the use of these modalities.

A black coating overlies rock paintings found within Little Lost Rive Cave, Idaho. A calibrated radiocarbon date of 1390-1040 B.C. was obtained by Steelman et al.1 However, this relies on the assumption that the black coating was formed by some human activity. For further characterization and to verify that the coating is anthropogenic, THM-GC-MS was performed on various samples collected throughout the cave, including soil samples from inside, outside, and above the cave. Humic and fulvic acids, synthetic and natural melanin, and experimentally created cooking residues were also analyzed as standard materials. Our objective was to test the hypothesis that increased GGT predicts an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in elderly Mexican Americans.

Data from a population-based cohort study of 1789 community-dwelling Mexican American men and women, aged 60-101, in the SALSA study were used. Data for 1,203 participants without diabetes at baseline were evaluated for incident diabetes. Proportional hazard models were used to predict the probability of incident T2D by GGT level.

After adjustment for age, gender, smoking, alcohol use, and BMI, the risk of developing T2D associated with GGT was significant at 1.4 (95% CI 1.2 -1.7). However, …

Commercially produced, food-size channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus that were harvested using routine procedures had significant elevations in plasma cortisol, glucose, and lactate compared with preharvest fish captured from open ponds. Blood samples were taken from 10 fish in each of two treatments (liquid oxygen diffuser- and paddlewheel-aerated holding socks) and four sampling periods (before harvest, after socking, before loading, and before unloading) during each of 10 harvest events. Water column temperatures averaged approximately 278 C during the study. This paper draws on the interrelation of whiteness and Orientalism to provide a framework for examining the use of skin-bleaching lotions and soaps by some Filipino men and women. Through this focus, I investigate the ways in which skin-bleaching negotiates the "threatening" existence of brown flesh upon the contours of Filipino bodies and within the corpus of western(ised) nations. These threats are negotiated through the skin wherein various chromatic inflections of the flesh become processed as a part of or a threat to normative comfort zones. The vascular flora of Saline County, Arkansas was collected from March 2002 to November 2007 resulting in a total of 1,510 taxa (52% of the known flora of Arkansas), representing 165 families, 617 genera, and 1,457 species. Of these, 241 (15.9%) are non-native and 99 (6.6%) are of state conservation concern. Of these, 20 taxa (1.3%) are considered to be of global conservation concern (G1-G3). Twenty-seven habitats and plant communities are qualitatively described from the county. Of these, shale barrens, igneous glades, pine flatwoods, swamp lakes and floatant marshes, channel scar depression ponds, high-gradient stream channels, and bluffs and talus …

The security of web-based applications concerns everyone who conducts business online. Cross-site request forgeries (CSRF) subject users, as well as applications, to attack. Cloaked by the standardized request and response interchange between browsers and web-based applications, an attacker can employ the browser as an agent to slip data into the transaction. CSRF exploits ride on session authentication and authorization, stealthily bypassing the security measures intended to form bonds of trust between the user and the application. Anhydrobiotic animals protect cellular architecture and metabolic machinery in the dry state, yet the molecular repertoire supporting this profound dehydration tolerance is not fully understood. For the desiccation-tolerant crustacean, Artemia franciscana, we report differential expression of two distinct mRNAs encoding for proteins that share sequence similarities and structural features with late-embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins originally discovered in plants. Bioinformatic analyses support assignment of the LEA proteins from A. franciscana to group 3. This eucoelomate species is the most highly evolved animal for which LEA gene expression has been reported. It is becoming clear that an ensemble of micromolecules and macromolecules …

Wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region exist in a matrix of grassland dominated by intensive pastoral and cultivation agriculture. Recent conservation management has emphasized the conversion of cultivated farmland and degraded pastures to intact grassland to improve upland nesting habitat. The consequences of changes in land-use cover that alter watershed processes have not been evaluated relative to their effect on the water budgets and vegetation dynamics of associated wetlands. We simulated the effect of upland agricultural practices on the water budget and vegetation of a semipermanent prairie wetland by modifying a previously published mathematical model (WETSIM). In a 1977 special feature on female terrorism, the German weekly newsmagazine, Der Spiegel, published a photograph of a woman with a bomb strapped to her front, masquerading as a pregnant woman. This image perfectly encapsulates the "paradoxical" quality of the female terrorist, who instead of giving life takes it. Furthermore, if, according to Tamar Mayer, women are represented in national and cultural narratives as "the nation's social and biological womb," the threatening quality of such representations for the body politic of the nation starts to become clear. This article will explore the presentation of the body of the terrorist in a range of British and American films with a particular emphasis on how these films combine political and romantic plotlines. As part of a broad consideration of how the terrorist is presented, this essay will concentrate in particular on Cal (1984), The Crying Game (1992), The Dancer Upstairs (2002) and The Quiet American (2002). Beginning with one single body painted by Gustave Courbet in 1866 and one temple destroyed on September 11th, this paper moves to consider the far reaching impact that the War on Terror has on the entire social body. By paying attention to the unknowable status of both the events and the perpetrators of terrorism, it will be argued that the overwhelming ambiguity of terrorism and counter-terrorist activity has allowed the War on Terror to return to prior discourses of racism and homophobia to mark the corporeal otherness it hopes to confront. The purpose of this study consisting of three projects was to determine the effects of long-term strenuous exercise on oxidative DNA damage and proteinuria in trained individuals. In the first project, four successive triathlons accompanied by long-term training in a triathlete was chosen as the experimental design and procedure. In the second project, repeated 5-h bouts of cycling exercise at 52 %VO2peak and a 40 km time trial with carbohydrate and potential antioxidant supplementation (fenugreek seed extract) were carried out with trained individuals. Liberal notions of autonomy have shaped our laws, and perhaps more importantly, the way we think about ourselves. In this paper, I discuss various theories of autonomy, and their problems—specifically their implications for understanding human subjects and their experiences. I am particularly concerned with the role of gender in these theories, and want to know whether women’s autonomy is meaningfully different than men’s autonomy—that is, if gender inequality significantly influences or determines women’s actual choices. In chapter one, I discuss Joel Feinberg’s liberal theory of autonomy, which describes an unhindered, self-governing agent, free to pursue his or her own goals. …
