Common And Distinct Mechanisms Of Different Redox-Active Carcinogens Involved In The Transformation Of Mouse Jb6p+ Cells, Sun Yang, Bobbye J. Misner, Rita Chiu, Frank L. Meyskens Jr.

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

We transformed JB6P+ cells with prolonged intermittent low-dose UVB radiation or prolonged exposure to low-dose H2O2 or CdCl2. Stable transformation was confirmed by an anchorage-independence assay. The JB6P+ transformants formed more colonies (∼six folds) in soft agar as compared to their JB6P+ parent cells and were associated with increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Activating protein-1 (AP-1) is a family of transcription factors that are rapidly activated by elevated intracellular ROS levels, and their composition is important in the process of cellular transformation and/or tumor progression. To investigate if carcinogenesis induced by distinct carcinogens was via similar molecular mechanisms …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

As the ear has dual functions for audition and balance, the eye has a dual role in detecting light for a wide range of behavioral and physiological functions separate from sight. These responses are driven primarily by stimulation of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) that are most sensitive to short-wavelength ( approximately 480 nm) blue light and remain functional in the absence of rods and cones. We examined the spectral sensitivity of non-image-forming responses in two profoundly blind subjects lacking functional rods and cones (one male, 56 yr old; one female, 87 yr old). In the male subject, we found …

A Major Event Of Self-Mutilation In A Patient With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Joel P. Johnson M.D. (Pgy4), Steven Sugden M.D., James A. Bourgeois O.D., M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

We describe a young adult male with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) who presented with a non-repetitive, major, genital self-mutilation necessitating urological intervention. On formal psychiatric evaluation, he did not have psychosis or suicidality. Most commonly, self-injury in developmental disability is less severe and more stereotypic; major-class self-mutilation is confined, generally, to psychosis. It is this discrepancy that is the unusual feature of our case.

Cognitive Functioning, Immune Functioning, And Disease Progression In Perinatally Infected Hiv+ School-Aged Children On Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy, Erin Theresa O'Callaghan

Open Access Dissertations

This study is one of the only investigations to examine the complex inter-relationships between immune status, cognitive functioning, and disease progression in school-aged, perinatally infected, HIV+ children on HAART over time and is the first to conduct long-term follow-up assessments beyond one year after initiating HAART. Previous research has shown that HIV+ children on HAART show stability in cognitive functioning for up to one year. The current study investigated cognitive functioning, as measured by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children -III, as a function of immune functioning and disease progression over time in this sample. Overall, results showed that PIQ …

Electrical Activation Studies Of Silicon Implanted Aluminum Gallium Nitride With High Aluminum Mole Fraction, Elizabeth A. Moore Dec 2007

Electrical Activation Studies Of Silicon Implanted Aluminum Gallium Nitride With High Aluminum Mole Fraction, Elizabeth A. Moore

Theses and Dissertations

This research demonstrates a method for producing highly conductive Si-implanted n-type aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa1-xN) alloys, and represents a comprehensive analysis of the resulting material's electrical and optical properties as a function of Al mole fraction, anneal temperature, anneal time, and implantation dose. Highly conductive alloys are critical to the fabrication of devices operating in deep UV, high-temperature, high-power, and high-frequency environments, and thus this research is significant in regard to the application of such devices. The AlxGa1-xN wafers of this study, with Al concentrations of 10 to 50%, were implanted at …

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin Dec 2007

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin

Theses and Dissertations

Multiagent task assignment problem descriptors do not fully represent the complex interactions in a multiagent domain, and algorithmic solutions vary widely depending on how the domain is represented. This issue is compounded as related research fields contain descriptors that similarly describe multiagent task assignment problems, including complex domain interactions, but generally do not provide the mechanisms needed to solve the multiagent aspect of task assignment. This research presents a unified approach to representing and solving the multiagent task assignment problem for complex problem domains. Ideas central to multiagent task allocation, project scheduling, constraint satisfaction, and coalition formation are combined to …

Nitrogen Fertilization Of Smooth Bromegrass In Interior And Southcentral Alaska, Natalie D. Howard Dec 2007

Nitrogen Fertilization Of Smooth Bromegrass In Interior And Southcentral Alaska, Natalie D. Howard

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

Although forage crops occupy the majority of agricultural land in Alaska, best fertilizer management practices to maximize forage yield and quality in Alaska are not well established. The objective of this study was to determine optimum time and rate of nitrogen (N) fertilizer applications to produce high yields of high quality forage in interior and Southcentral Alaska from smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermus). Nine N fertilization treatments, differing in rate and time of application, were applied at four sites. Forage samples were harvested twice per season in 1999 and 2000 to obtain yield and quality values. Nitrogen applied at 225 kg …

Chemical And Microbial Characterization Of North Slope Viscous Oils For Meor Application, Ashish L. Ghotekar Dec 2007

Chemical And Microbial Characterization Of North Slope Viscous Oils For Meor Application, Ashish L. Ghotekar

Engineering

Viscous oil reservoirs tend to be low-energy, low-gas/oil-ratio systems with high viscosities and are difficult to produce, transport and refine by conventional methods. Some of the commonly considered viscous oil recovery methods include processes such as steam flooding, in-situ combustion and miscible gas injection. The large viscous oil deposits in the ANS cannot be produced entirely by conventional methods like pressure displacement or waterflooding. Other methods such as miscible (gas injection and water alternating gas (WAG) also have limited success. Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is one of the techniques for improving the oil recovery for viscous deposits. This method …

The Distribution And Phylogeography Of The Alaska Marmot (Marmota Broweri), Aren M. Gunderson Dec 2007

The Distribution And Phylogeography Of The Alaska Marmot (Marmota Broweri), Aren M. Gunderson

Biological Sciences

The taxonomic and distributional status of the Marmota broweri has been the subject of much debate and confusion since it was first described as a subspecies of the hoary marmot (M caligata). Through a review of all museum specimens, published accounts of this species, field surveys, and the identification of previously unidentified marmot specimens we have determined the current distribution of the Alaska marmot to include the Brooks Range, the Ray Mountains, and the Kokrines Hills of northern Alaska. The Yukon River forms the boundary between the peripatric distributions of M broweri and M caligata in Alaska. Since M broweri …

The Role Of Fire In The Carbon Dynamics Of The Boreal Forest, Michael S. Balshi Dec 2007

The Role Of Fire In The Carbon Dynamics Of The Boreal Forest, Michael S. Balshi

Biological Sciences

The boreal forest contains large reserves of carbon, and across this region wildfire is a common occurrence. To improve the understanding of how wildfire influences the carbon dynamics of this region, methods were developed to incorporate the spatial and temporal effects of fire into the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM). The historical role of fire on carbon dynamics of the boreal region was evaluated within the context of ecosystem responses to changing atmospheric CO₂ and climate. These results show that the role of historical fire on boreal carbon dynamics resulted in a net carbon sink; however, fire plays a major role …

Effect Of Oxidative Stress On Kinetic Parameters Of Cellular Actin Dynamics, Sayali Devdatta Kulkarni Dec 2007

Effect Of Oxidative Stress On Kinetic Parameters Of Cellular Actin Dynamics, Sayali Devdatta Kulkarni

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The integrity and dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton is essential for the morphology and motility of neuronal cells both in developing and adult nervous system. Oxidative modification of actin both as monomers and in filaments alters the kinetics of actin filament dynamics contributing to neurodegeneration and aging. Our objective focused on changes of the kinetic parameters of oxidized actin as opposed to naive actin and its resulting effects on actin filament dynamics. We first validated Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) technology for our objective by studying interaction of naive actin with a monoclonal anti-actin antibody and DNase I. For interactions of …

Rhinoceros Auklet Developmental Responses To Moderate Food Restriction, Justine Sears Dec 2007

Rhinoceros Auklet Developmental Responses To Moderate Food Restriction, Justine Sears

Biological Sciences

Seabird nestlings are vulnerable to food restriction because their parents may not buffer them from prey shortages. I conducted a captive study to explore how rhinoceros auklet chicks (Cerorhinca monocerata) may cope with food restriction and avoid long-term fitness consequences. I predicted auklet nestlings would be adapted to moderate levels of food-stress, and investigated how morphological allocation, glucocorticoid stress response, and fledging behavior change under conditions of a 50% calorie restriction. I also investigated effects of growth and food restriction on carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios ([delta]¹³C and [delta]¹⁵N) in auklet tissues. I found that food-restricted auklets allocated resources …

Analysis And Comparison Of Age-Structured Assessment Models For Two Pacific Herring Populations, Peter-John F. Hulson Dec 2007

Analysis And Comparison Of Age-Structured Assessment Models For Two Pacific Herring Populations, Peter-John F. Hulson

Fisheries

Substantial research has been devoted to identify causes for decline the of Prince William Sound (PWS) Pacific herring in the early 1990's because of the proximity to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill (EVOS). A potential source for decline has been identified with the isolation of disease in the PWS population. There have been limited investigations of PWS Pacific herring population dynamics related to other stocks in the Gulf of Alaska. The objective of this thesis was to compare observations and age-structured assessment (ASA) model results between PWS and Sitka Sound Pacific herring. Data conflicts were evaluated in the PWS …

The Effect Of Temperature On Circulating Levels Of Methyl Farnesoate And Ecdysteroid Hormones In Female Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio, From The Bering Sea, Jacqueline Loretta Mitchell Dec 2007

The Effect Of Temperature On Circulating Levels Of Methyl Farnesoate And Ecdysteroid Hormones In Female Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio, From The Bering Sea, Jacqueline Loretta Mitchell

Fisheries

Methyl farnesoate, a reproductive hormone in crustaceans, was detected for the first time in the hemolymph of female Chionoecetes opilio. Ovigerous crabs were maintained at -1,0, 1, and 3° C to represent near bottom temperatures of the Bering Sea, throughout a reproductive cycle to assess changes, and temperature effects, in hormone levels associated with ovarian maturation, hatching and subsequent extrusion of the next clutch. Methyl farnesoate (MF) levels did not change significantly in any treatment throughout the duration of egg incubation. Levels of MF significantly decreased in crabs exposed to -1 and 0° C when initial versus post extrusion levels …

Landscape Modeling Of Threespine Stickleback Occurrence In Small Southeast Alaska Lakes, Dave Gregovich Dec 2007

Landscape Modeling Of Threespine Stickleback Occurrence In Small Southeast Alaska Lakes, Dave Gregovich

Fisheries

Although threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L) are known to inhabit a wide range of habitats, their distribution in lakes across Southeast Alaska is not known. Threespine stickleback are an important prey item for many consumers in freshwater ecosystems. Additionally, isolated populations may be genetically unique and thus important from a conservation perspective. This study focused on identifying' landscape factors and models useful in predicting the presence of threespine stickleback in small (0.5-5 ha) lakes of Southeast Alaska. Stickleback occurrence was assessed via snorkeling and minnow trapping in 54 lakes, which were divided into calibration (n=36) and prediction (n=18) data sets. …

Feeding Ecology And Energy Density Of Juvenile Chum Salmon, Oncorhynchus Keta, From Kuskokwim Bay, Western Alaska, Sean Eugene Burril Dec 2007

Feeding Ecology And Energy Density Of Juvenile Chum Salmon, Oncorhynchus Keta, From Kuskokwim Bay, Western Alaska, Sean Eugene Burril

Fisheries

Juvenile chum salmon from Kuskokwim Bay were sampled for patterns in diet and energy density in 2003 and 2004. Comparisons were made interannually, seasonally, between juvenile size classes, and between sailinity ranges. Sampling was conducted using a modified Kvichak Trawl. Bomb calorimetry was used to obtain energy density values. Feeding success and feeding intensity increased with fish size and season, and was highest in waters with moderate salinity. Feeding success and intensity were lowest for smaller juvenile chum salmon collected early in the season in water with low salinity. Prey composition was similar in both years, but varied with fish …

Bacteria Associated With Paralytic Shellfish Toxin-Producing Strains Of Anabaena Circinalis, Renee Alaine Raudonis Dec 2007

Bacteria Associated With Paralytic Shellfish Toxin-Producing Strains Of Anabaena Circinalis, Renee Alaine Raudonis

Marine Biology

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) are produced by dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria. There is growing evidence that bacteria associated with dinoflagellates play a role in the production of PSTs, however, no studies have examined the type of bacteria associated with toxic cyanobacteria or the role these bacteria could play in PST-production or metabolism. Further, there are no known axenic cultures of PST-producing cyanobacteria, suggesting that cyanobacteria are dependent on one or more bacteria for growth/survival. The research reported here examined the bacterial community associated with six Australian freshwater cyanobacterial strains of Anabaena circinalis obtained from the CSIRO, three toxic and three non-toxic. …

A Multi-Proxy Approach To Determine Paleoecological Change Of Mangroves, During The Holocene, In Belize, Central America, Natalie Marie Monacci Dec 2007

A Multi-Proxy Approach To Determine Paleoecological Change Of Mangroves, During The Holocene, In Belize, Central America, Natalie Marie Monacci

Marine Biology

This thesis presents multiple analyses of mangrove peat cores from Spanish Lookout Cay (BT - 79) and from along the banks of the Sibun River (SR-63), Belize to examine ecosystem responses to environmental change during the Holocene. Radiocarbon measurements showed these sites were colonized by mangroves ~8,000 cal. yrs BP and have decreased sedimentation rates from ~6,000 to ~1,000 cal. yrs BP, which is attributed to a decrease in sea-level inundation. Core SR-63 has a change in lithology from primarily mangrove peat to fluvial material at 2,500 cal. yrs BP, which is attributed to erosion inputs of the drainage basin. …

Oral Immunization Of Rhesus Macaques With Adenoviral Hiv Vaccines Using Enteric-Coated Capsules, George T. Mercier, Pramod N. Nehete, Marco F. Passeri, Bharti N. Nehete, Eric A. Weaver, Nancy Smyth Templeton, Kimberly Schluns, Stephanie S. Buchl, K. Buchl, Michael A. Barry

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Targeted delivery of vaccine candidates to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract holds potential for mucosal immunization, particularly against mucosal pathogens like the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Among the different strategies for achieving targeted release in the GI tract, namely the small intestine, pH sensitive enteric coating polymers have been shown to protect solid oral dosage forms from the harsh digestive environment of the stomach and dissolve relatively rapidly in the small intestine by taking advantage of the luminal pH gradient. We developed an enteric polymethacrylate formulation for coating hydroxy-propyl-methyl-cellulose (HPMC) capsules containing lyophilized Adenoviral type 5 (Ad5) vectors expressing HIV-1 gag …

Post-Breeding Habitat Use By Adult Boreal Toads (Bufo Boreas) After Wildfire In Glacier National Park, Usa, C. Gregory Guscio, Blake R. Hossack, Lisa A. Eby, Paul Stephen Corn Dec 2007

Post-Breeding Habitat Use By Adult Boreal Toads (Bufo Boreas) After Wildfire In Glacier National Park, Usa, C. Gregory Guscio, Blake R. Hossack, Lisa A. Eby, Paul Stephen Corn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Effects of wildfire on amphibians are complex, and some species may benefit from the severe disturbance of stand-replacing fire. Boreal Toads (Bufo boreas boreas) in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA increased in occurrence after fires in 2001 and 2003. We used radio telemetry to track adult B. boreas in a mosaic of terrestrial habitats with different burn severities to better understand factors related to the post-fire pulse in breeding activity. Toads used severely burned habitats more than expected and partially burned habitats less than expected. No toads were relocated in unburned habitat, but little of the study area …

Wildfire Effects On Water Temperature And Selection Of Breeding Sites By The Boreal Toad (Bufo Boreas) In Seasonal Wetlands, Blake R. Hossack, Paul Stephen Corn Dec 2007

Wildfire Effects On Water Temperature And Selection Of Breeding Sites By The Boreal Toad (Bufo Boreas) In Seasonal Wetlands, Blake R. Hossack, Paul Stephen Corn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Disturbances can significantly affect the thermal regime and community structure of wetlands. We investigated the effect of a wildfire on water temperature of seasonal, montane wetlands after documenting the colonization of recently burned wetlands by the Boreal Toad (Bufo boreas boreas). We compared the daily mean temperature, daily maximum temperature, and accumulated growing degree·days measured on the north shore of three classes of wetlands: unburned wetlands, burned wetlands that were colonized by breeding toads, and burned wetlands that were not colonized. We hypothesized that toads colonized burned wetlands because they were warmer than unburned wetlands and selected specific …
