Rhetoricians such as Robert Ivie and George Lakoffhave examined the use of language of opposition to create and control various enemies during the War on Terror, but they have also ignored or overlooked numerous cases. This paper will examine one such case, that of Muammar al-Gaddafi, whose reciprocal violence eventually succumbed to the oppressor's global economic power. This case study will explore how the U.S. government rhetorically constructed Gaddafi in order to control both his identity within American society (as either an enemy or an ally), as well as the counter-violence that Gaddafi supposedly enacted against Western systems of power. …

George Frederick Wright was an Oberlin-educated theologian and self-taught geologist who lived from 1838 to 1921. He was among the most influential Christian interpreters of Darwinism as Americans began to debate the theory in the 1870s and 1880s. In his writings, Wright illustrated a method for reconciling evolutionary theory with Christianity. Wright himself was a Calvinist, and he argued that his own conservative theological tradition shared important characteristics with Darwinism. At the turn of the century, however, Wright began to criticize both Darwinism in particular and evolutionary thought generally. A decade later, he was among the authors of a series …

Land application of chicken litter from production houses that use the organoarsenical 3-nitro-4-hydroxybenzenearsonic acid (roxarsone) results in deposition of significant quantities of arsenic into United States soil each year. Used widely as a feed additive in the poultry industry, roxarsone was originally thought to be stable in the environment. However, recent evidence from our lab, as well as others, has established that this benign compound is readily transformed via several intermediates into inorganic arsenate. While microbial activity has been implicated in this process, there is no direct evidence suggesting the specific processes or the organisms involved.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) within the scope of occupational therapy has the potential to add to the holistic treatment of clients with a wide range of disability or dysfunction. It has been suggested that a variety of complementary and alternative methods may be appropriate to use as an adjunctive treatment by occupational therapists with proper training and consideration of various client needs (Giese, 2005). A comprehensive literature review was conducted regarding the use of CAM with populations commonly seen by occupational therapists. Retinoic acid (RA) is essential for normal vertebrate development, including the patterning of the central nervous system. During early embryogenesis, RA is produced in the trunk mesoderm through the metabolism of vitamin A derived from the maternal diet and behaves as a morphogen in the developing hindbrain where it specifies nested domains of Hox gene expression. The loss of endogenous sources of RA can be rescued by treatment with a uniform concentration of exogenous RA, indicating that domains of RA responsiveness can be shaped by mechanisms other than the simple diffusion of RA from a localized posterior source. This Article focuses on the legal treatment of retaliatory harassment claims. It argues that retaliatory harassment is an often misunderstood and underanalyzed concept in the law of workplace harassment. This Article seeks to distinguish the legal treatment of retaliatory harassment from sexual harassment. Family Preservation: The Parents’ Perceptions, Cheryl D. Lee, Cecilia Ayon

This research documents the perspective of 100 parents who had an open case with the Department of Children and Family Service’s (DCFS) regarding their family’s well-being, reasons for referral and satisfaction with services. Two DCFS services, Family Preservation (FP) and routine Family Maintenance (FM) were examined using standardized instruments. Parents’ responses regarding reasons for involvement with the system differed from DCFS administrative data. FP parents had more children, were more likely to be monolingual Spanish speakers, and perceived greater improvement in discipline and emotional care of children and housing than FM parents. FP parents reported being satisfied with services. Implications …

The decline in rare plant populations and the decrease in size of their native ranges have led to escalating losses of biodiversity. A combination of shrub cutting and fire was applied to an endangered species "hot spot" in southern Rhode Island, USA to determine the effects of these treatments on a group of eight rare herbaceous plant species exposed to ever-increasing encroachment by tall shrubs. Shrub cutting and fire were also applied to a shrub-dominated area adjacent to the hot spot to determine if it was possible to promote establishment and growth of the rare plants in areas in which …

The purpose of this study was to reconceptualize emotional closeness in women's relationships through the introduction of a model of healthy emotional reliance (HER). This study intended to develop and validate a psychometrically sound measure of female healthy emotional reliance that will provide a means by which to measure a re-conceptualization of the healthy portions of merger in female couples. The original focus of merger, based on psychoanalytic theory, has been pathological. More recently it has been to some extent re-conceptualized as a healthy and functional emotional closeness. Assessing The Effects Of Fluctuating River Stage On An Mtbe Containment Plume Discharging To Surface Water, Pascoag, Ri, James L. Allen

Ground-water/surface-water interactions and MTBE contaminant plume discharge were investigated in a low-order river that experiences episodic river stage fluctuations. Results show that the hydraulic gradient fluctuates hourly to monthly due to river stage changes, water table recharge events, and reservoir gate adjustments. Hyporheic exchange driven by channel morphology creates small-scale gaining, losing, and parallel flow systems along the mostly gaining reach. During precipitation events, infiltrating rainfall rapidly saturates the extended capillary fringe and the shallow floodplain water table rises forming a ground-water ridge or mound and causing a steepened hydraulic gradient towards the river. In 1994 we published an annotated list of 14 bird species that were newly discovered in Arkansas since the publication in 1986 of the monograph "Arkansas Birds, Their Distribution and Abundance." We now add 22 more new species found in Arkansas since the 1994 publication, and update the status of the original 14. Adding these 36 species to the number included in "Arkansas Birds" totals 402 bird species currently reported in Arkansas.

Characterization Of Bacteriophages Of Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato, Sara E. Prior, Amanda J. Andrews, Russell O. Nordeen

Bacteriophages from supernatants of the plant pathogenic bacteria Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (P. tomato) were isolated, enriched, and purified by density block centrifugation in cesium chloride (CsCl) step gradients. The DNA from purified phage was isolated and digested with the restriction endonucleases EcoRl or HindIII. Three different DNA fingerprint patterns were determined indicating 3 unique phage isolates. Genome sizes of the phage ranged from 40 to 52 kilobases (kB). Buoyant densities of phage particles in CsCI varied from 1.36 to 1.51 glml. Electron microscopy revealed a single morphological type with an elongated polyhedral head and a long tail indicating the …
