Regeneration Of Retinotectal Projections After Optic Tectum Removal In Adult Newts, Mitsumasa Okamoto, Hatsuki Ohsawa, Toshinori Hayashi, Katsushi Owaribe, Panagiotis A. Tsonis Nov 2007

Regeneration Of Retinotectal Projections After Optic Tectum Removal In Adult Newts, Mitsumasa Okamoto, Hatsuki Ohsawa, Toshinori Hayashi, Katsushi Owaribe, Panagiotis A. Tsonis

Biology Faculty Publications

Purpose: When injured, the adult newt possesses the remarkable capability to regenerate tissues and organs with return of function and physiology. One example is the newt eye, in which regeneration can restore normal vision if the retina or lens has been removed. We wanted to examine how the retinotectal projections regenerate after removal of the brain’s optic tectum and establish this animal as a model for retinal projection as well as a central nervous system regeneration model.

Relationship Between Vegetation Biophysical Properties And Surface Temperature Using Multisensor Satellite Data, Seungbum Hong, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Eric Small

Faculty Publications

Vegetation is an important factor in global climatic variability and plays a key role in the complexinteractions between the land surface and the atmosphere. This study focuses on the spatial and temporalvariability of vegetation and its relationship with land–atmosphere interactions. The authors have analyzedthe vegetation water content (VegWC) from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS(AMSR-E), the leaf area index (LAI), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the land surfacetemperature (Ts), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Three regions, which have climatically differing characteristics, have been selected: the North America Monsoon System(NAMS) region, the Southern Great Plains (SGP) region, and …

Codon Usage In Twelve Species Of Drosophila, Saverio Vicario, Etsuko N. Moriyama, Jeffrey R. Powell Nov 2007

Codon Usage In Twelve Species Of Drosophila, Saverio Vicario, Etsuko N. Moriyama, Jeffrey R. Powell

Papers in Genetics

Background: Codon usage bias (CUB), the uneven use of synonymous codons, is a ubiquitous observation in virtually all organisms examined. The pattern of codon usage is generally similar among closely related species, but differs significantly among distantly related organisms, e.g., bacteria, yeast, and Drosophila. Several explanations for CUB have been offered and some have been supported by observations and experiments, although a thorough understanding of the evolutionary forces (random drift, mutation bias, and selection) and their relative importance remains to be determined. The recently available complete genome DNA sequences of twelve phylogenetically defined species of Drosophila offer a hitherto …

Myricetin Inhibits Escherichia Coli Dnab Helicase But Not Primase, Mark A. Griep, Sheldon Blood, Marilynn A. Larson, Scott A. Koepsell, Steven H. Hinrichs Nov 2007

Myricetin Inhibits Escherichia Coli Dnab Helicase But Not Primase, Mark A. Griep, Sheldon Blood, Marilynn A. Larson, Scott A. Koepsell, Steven H. Hinrichs

Mark A. Griep Publications

Primase and DnaB helicase play central roles during DNA replication initiation and elongation. Both enzymes are drug targets because they are essential, persistent among bacterial genomes, and have different sequences than their eukaryotic equivalents. Myricetin is a ubiquitous natural product in plants that is known to inhibit a variety of DNA polymerases, RNA polymerases, reverse transcriptases, and telomerases in addition being able to inhibit kinases and helicases. We have shown that myricetin inhibits Escherichia coli DnaB helicase according to a mechanism dominated by noncompetitive behavior with a Ki of 10.0 ± 0.5 μM. At physiological ATP concentration, myricetin inhibits …

Wingless Activity In The Precursor Cells Specifies Neuronal Migratory Behavior In The Drosophila Nerve Cord, Krishna Moorthi Bhat Nov 2007

Wingless Activity In The Precursor Cells Specifies Neuronal Migratory Behavior In The Drosophila Nerve Cord, Krishna Moorthi Bhat

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Neurons and their precursor cells are formed in different regions within the developing CNS, but they migrate and occupy very specific sites in the mature CNS. The ultimate position of neurons is crucial for establishing proper synaptic connectivity in the brain. In Drosophila, despite its extensive use as a model system to study neurogenesis, we know almost nothing about neuronal migration or its regulation. In this paper, I show that one of the most studied neuronal pairs in the Drosophila nerve cord, RP2/sib, has a complicated migratory route. Based on my studies on Wingless (Wg) signaling, I report that the …

Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, Spencer Fleury Nov 2007

Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, Spencer Fleury

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Karst topography is the result of a specific combination of geological conditions, precipitation, biota, and temperature, and is characterized by the gradual solution of the underlying bedrock and the development of underground drainage routes for surficial runoff. Many of these karst landscapes are found in urbanized areas, where the potential for anthropogenic impact is quite high. In many instances, municipalities on karst terrains choose to mitigate these impacts by implementing ordinances that place restrictions on permissible land uses near karst landforms. This dissertation asks the question: are the impacts of karst-related land use regulation on human / social systems significant …

Trace Metals And Stable Isotopes As Tracers Of Life History And Trophic Connections In Estuarine-Dependent Fish From Tampa Bay, Florida, Linae Marie Boehme-Terrana

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Florida's estuaries support a wide range of species yet little is known about tracemetal cycling among members of this important ecosystem. To examine the flow of trace metals through the Tampa Bay estuary, four fish species representing different trophic levels were analyzed for copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and stable isotopes of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Species selected were the striped mullet (Mugil cephalus), tidewater mojarra (Eucinostomus harengulus), bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli), and sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius). Juvenile fish were collected from the Alafia, Hillsborough, Palm, and Little Manatee Rivers. Adults were …

Counter-Flow Ion Mobility Analysis: Design, Instrumentation, And Characterization, Nosa Agbonkonkon Nov 2007

Counter-Flow Ion Mobility Analysis: Design, Instrumentation, And Characterization, Nosa Agbonkonkon

Theses and Dissertations

The quest to achieve high resolution in ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) has continued to challenge scientist and engineers in the field of separation science. The low resolution presently attainable in IMS has continued to negatively impact its utility and acceptance. Until now, efforts to improve the resolution have mainly focused on better instrumentation and detection methods. However, since the resolution of IMS is diffusion limited, it makes sense to address this limitation in order to attain high resolution. This dissertation presents a new IMS technique, which utilizes a high electric field and opposing high gas flow velocity with the aim …

Our previous study documented expression of a male-transmitted cytochrome c oxidase subunit II protein (MCOX2), with a C-terminus extension (MCOX2e), in unionoidean bivalve testes and sperm mitochondria. Here, we present evidence demonstrating that MCOX2 is seasonally expressed in testis, with a peak shortly before fertilization that is independent of sperm density. MCOX2 is localized to the inner and outer sperm mitochondrial membranes and the MCOX2 antibody’s epitope is conserved across >65 million years of evolution. We also demonstrate the presence of male-transmitted mtDNA and season-specific MCOX2 spatial variation in ovaries. We hypothesize …
