In a previous study, we showed that the inositol pyrophosphate diphosphoinositol pentakisphosphate (IP(7)) physiologically phosphorylates mammalian and yeast proteins. We now report that this phosphate transfer reflects pyrophosphorylation. Thus, proteins must be prephosphorylated by ATIP to prime them for IP(7) phosphorylation. IP(7) phosphorylates synthetic phosphopeptides but not if their phosphates have been masked by methylation or pyrophosphorylation. Moreover, IP(7) phosphorylated peptides are more acid-labile and more resistant to phosphatases than ATIP phosphorylated peptides, indicating a different type of phosphate bond. Pyrophosphorylation may represent a novel mode of signaling to proteins.

Making Some Bones About It, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Frank Frisch Jan 2007

Making Some Bones About It, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Frank Frisch

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The article discusses the importance of bone tissue to human beings and the ways to help students to understand its functions. The bone tissue forms the human skeleton to produce varied motions such as walking and talking. In addition, it protects the vital organs of a person and contributes the development of blood. The bone is composed of bone matrix, a dense material occupied by calcium and potassium salts. The matrix comprises several cell types including osteoblasts, osteocytes and osteoclasts. According to the author, a continuous influx of new calcium is necessary because of the constant remodeling of bone tissue. …

Synthesis And Antifungal Properties Of Alpha-Methoxy And Alpha-Hydroxyl Substituted 4-Thiatetradecanoic Acids, Nestor Carballeira, Rosann O'Neill, Keykavous Parang Jan 2007

Synthesis And Antifungal Properties Of Alpha-Methoxy And Alpha-Hydroxyl Substituted 4-Thiatetradecanoic Acids, Nestor Carballeira, Rosann O'Neill, Keykavous Parang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

4-Thiatetradecanoic acid exhibited weak antifungal activities against Candida albicans (ATCC 60193), Cryptococcus neoformans (ATCC 6603 1), and Aspergillus niger (ATCC 16404) (MIC = 4.8-12.7 mM). It has been demonstrated that alpha-methoxylation efficiently blocks P-oxidation and significantly improve the antifungal activities of fatty acids. We examined whether antifungal activity of 4-thiatetradecanoic acid can be improved by a-substitution. The unprecedented (+/-)-2-tiydroxy-4-thiatetradecanoic acid was synthesized in four steps (20% overall yield), while the (+/-)-2-methoxy-4-thiatetradecanoic acid was synthesized in five steps (14% overall yield) starting from 1-decanethiol. The key step in the synthesis was the hydrolysis of a trimethylsilyloxynitrile. In general, the novel (+/-)-2-methoxy-4-thiatetradecanoic …

Privatization And The Human Right To Water: Challenges For The New Century, Melina Williams Jan 2007

Privatization And The Human Right To Water: Challenges For The New Century, Melina Williams

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note considers implications for the human fight to water in the context of the trend toward privatization of water supplies. Part II examines the legal bases of the right to water, and Part III discusses the potential obligations that arise from it. Part IV then looks at the interaction between the fight to water and arrangements to privatize water supplies. This Note posits that human rights law does not simply support or oppose privatization of water supplies and services. Rather, bringing a human rights perspective to the problem of providing water to the world's population both clarifies the minimum …

What Is The Use Of International Law? International Law As A 21st Century Guardian Of Welfare, Emmanuelle Jouannet Jan 2007

What Is The Use Of International Law? International Law As A 21st Century Guardian Of Welfare, Emmanuelle Jouannet

Michigan Journal of International Law

The thesis of this Essay is that international law currently represents a welfare-driven and bio-political structuring mode for international society which not only counterbalances liberal economic globalization, but also draws from it. This inquiry offers a political interpretation of contemporary international law to clarify its functioning and the effects of its legal rationality, as well as to answer the question of its efficacy. An evolution has taken place for at least a century and has only attainted partial completion. It is the fruit of modernity that constantly projects its aspirations, its unity, and its contradictions onto the international legal system. …

From Right To Wrong: A Critique Of The 2000 Uniform Parentage Act, Mary P. Byrn Jan 2007

From Right To Wrong: A Critique Of The 2000 Uniform Parentage Act, Mary P. Byrn

Faculty Scholarship

In 1973, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (the Conference) proposed a Uniform Parentage Act (UPA) that radically changed how parentage was determined in the United States. Prior to 1973, the parentage laws of most states failed to identify two legal parents for thousands of children merely because their parents were not married. These "illegitimate" children were considered a "child of no one" under the law and were denied the significant emotional, financial, and legal benefits of having two legal parents. By the early 1970s, however, the conference recognized that such treatment of children was becoming scientifically, …

What's International Law Got To Do With It? Transnational Law And The Intelligence Mission, James E. Baker Jan 2007

What's International Law Got To Do With It? Transnational Law And The Intelligence Mission, James E. Baker

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article describes a continuum of contemporary threats to U.S. national security, with a focus on nonstate terrorism. Part III addresses the role of intelligence and national security law, and in particular law addressed to process, in combating these threats. Good process advances the liberty and safety interests embodied in the concept of national security. Good process improves the quality of decision. It also enhances accountability, which in turn improves decision. Where good process is defined in law to include executive directive, it is better insulated from the immediate imperatives of secrecy and speed.

Structural Comparison Of Scorpion Activator Peptides, Regina Sampson Jan 2007

Structural Comparison Of Scorpion Activator Peptides, Regina Sampson

Honors Capstones

Scorpion activator polypeptides specifically bind to sodium channels, however the mechanism of binding is unknown. A hypothesis has been advanced by my project mentor (Dr. R. Hahin) that specifies the part of the molecule that binds and interacts with the channel. Also, certain parts of the activators play a key role in the maintenance of its three dimensional structure. The focus of the project is to compare peptides to further test the hypothesis and obtain important structural information that may well be common to all the molecules. Studies and analysis were achieved by using bioinformatic tools such as NCBI, EMBO, …

Post Saddam Restructuring Of Intellectual Property Rights In Iraq Through A Case Study Of Current Intellectual Property Practices In Lebanon, Egypt, And Jordan, 6 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 250 (2007), Elizabeth Mirza Al-Dajani

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, it did so with the ambitious goal to completely transform an isolationist government into an international democracy. The Coalition forces created laws designed to conform Iraq to international standards, including three Orders tracking the language of the WTO and its IP enforcement mechanism, the TRIPs Agreement. These standards, however, are often inapposite of unique cultural and religious beliefs of an Arab Middle Eastern country that views ideas, concepts, and knowledge as communal. This comment analyzes similarly situated countries in various stages of dealing with the transition and suggests affirmative steps to expedite …

A Two-Front Assault On The Stem Cell Patents, 6 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 501 (2007), Dillon Beardsley

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The recent establishment of human embryonic stem cell lines has inspired a new revolution in therapeutic treatments and cures for injuries or disease. Individual states have begun to circumvent the lack of federal funding by independently raising monetary support for the research. The patentee, The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, has reminded those hoping to benefit from the state funding that the Foundation will require royalties for the commercial use of its patented technology. The loss of state taxpayer money to the patent holder ignited a challenge on the patents themselves. Interest groups requested a reexamination of the stem cell patents …

Holderman, Matthew F. Kennelly, Meredith Martin Addy, Patrick G. Burns, Bradford P. Lyerla, George P. Mcandrews, David L. Schwartz, Constantine L. Trela Jr.

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

In KSR International Co. v. Teleflex Inc., the Supreme Court considered what test applies to determine whether an invention is “obvious.” The Court ruled that the teaching-suggestion- motivation (“TSM”) test, developed over the years by the Federal Circuit to defend against hindsight reconstruction, is only one method a court or patent examiner may use when addressing obviousness. The Court’s holding overturned Federal Circuit precedent, which required a finding of non-obviousness unless a teaching, suggestion, or motivation to combine was established. The panel discussion brings together leadings jurists; former law clerks of the Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit, and other courts; …

Indigenous Scientific Literacies In Nalo Hopkinson’S Ceremonial Worlds, Grace L. Dillon

Indigenous Nations Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Increasingly our critical tradition is recognizing the prevalence of issues of indigeneity in sf. Whether this emerging emphasis reflects keener powers of observation on the part of readers or shifting preferences on the part of writers, it is clear that, as the idealism of a Golden Age melts into the dross of colonial aftermath, sf is beginning to reflect the West's rising awareness that manifest destinies, whatever fashion they wear, wield a violent science in pursuing control and care little for the cultures they displace and erase. Nor is it surprising that a genre noted for its pioneering exploration of …

Animal Experimentation: Lessons From Human Experimentation, Arthur Birmingham Lafrance Jan 2007

Animal Experimentation: Lessons From Human Experimentation, Arthur Birmingham Lafrance

Animal Law Review

This article is adapted from the author's presentation during the panel discussion Animals in Research: Pet Cloning, Patents, and Bioethics at the 14th Annual Animal Law Conference of Lewis & Clark Law School on October 14, 2006.

Conventional wisdom tells us that animal experimentation is a relevant precursor to human experimentation. The failings of human experimentation to be more reliable, however, casts substantial doubt on the necessity and appropriateness of experimentation on animals. The federal government and medical community, since World War II, has used the Nuremberg Code and the “common rule” to determine how to ethically conduct human experimentation. …
