Descriptions Of Soronia Complex (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae: Nitidulinae) Larvae Of New Zealand With Comments On Life History And Taxonomy, Chris Carlton, Richard A.B. Leschen Jan 2007

Descriptions Of Soronia Complex (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae: Nitidulinae) Larvae Of New Zealand With Comments On Life History And Taxonomy, Chris Carlton, Richard A.B. Leschen

Faculty Publications

We provide the first descriptions of larvae of the nitidulid beetles Soronia oculata Reitter and Hisparonia hystrix (Sharp), compare them with similar larvae of other nitidulids, and comment on the utility of larval data in phylogenetic studies. Soronia oculata larvae are quite similar to many other larvae within the Soronia genus complex, but those of H. hystrix are distinctly different, namely by having an unfringed, spinose mandibular prostheca, striations of mola obscured by blunt teeth, and malar setae that are course and restricted to the distal half. This supports the recent transfer of the species to a monotypic genus. Larvae …

Conservation Of The Brca1 Gene, Matthew Gary Wronkowski Jan 2007

Conservation Of The Brca1 Gene, Matthew Gary Wronkowski

Theses

Most research has been conducted on the structure and function of many individual genes as well as complementary proteins. Many of these studies look at specific population groups' country of origin, geographic location, or ethnicity but do not correlate findings between these groups. In this project I attempted to associate the structural and functional consequences of individual mutations in Human BRCA1 to other organisms. My findings suggest a strong correlation between human geographical isolation and mutation exclusivity. Furthermore strong sequence and mutation conservation as well as structural homology exist between many species.

A Race Or A Nation? Cherokee National Identity And The Status Of Freedmen's Descendants, S. Alan Ray Jan 2007

A Race Or A Nation? Cherokee National Identity And The Status Of Freedmen's Descendants, S. Alan Ray

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article examines the Cherokee Freedmen controversy to assess whether law and biology can function as sufficient models for crafting Cherokee identity at this crucial moment in the tribe's history. The author will argue that while law and biology are historically powerful frames for establishing tribal self-identity, they are inadequate to the task of determining who should enjoy national citizenship. The wise use of sovereignty, the author suggests, lies in creating a process of sustained dialogical engagement among all stakeholders in the definition of Cherokee citizenship on the question of Cherokee identity. This dialogue should ideally have been undertaken before …

We Need Inquire Further: Normative Sterotypes, Hasidic Jews, And The Civil Rights Act Of 1866, William Kaplowitz Jan 2007

We Need Inquire Further: Normative Sterotypes, Hasidic Jews, And The Civil Rights Act Of 1866, William Kaplowitz

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

According to modern Supreme Court opinions, The Civil Rights Act of 1866 prohibits only "discrimination [against members of protected groups] solely because of their ancestry or ethnic characteristics." The Court refers to this type of discrimination as 'racial animus.' In the 1987 case Shaare Tefila Congregation v. CobbJews were recognized as a protected ethnic group under these statutes, but the Supreme Court also reaffirmed that The Civil Rights Act only prohibits 'ethnic' or 'ancestral' discrimination. The Act does not encompass religious discrimination. Yet, despite the Supreme Court's rulings, the district courts held that both Rabbi LeBlanc-Sternberg's and Mr. Singers' allegations …

The Pocahontas Exception: The Exemption Of American Indian Ancestry From Racial Purity Law, Kevin Noble Maillard Jan 2007

The Pocahontas Exception: The Exemption Of American Indian Ancestry From Racial Purity Law, Kevin Noble Maillard

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

"The Pocahontas Exception" confronts the legal existence and cultural fascination with the eponymous "Indian Grandmother." Laws existed in many states that prohibited marriage between Whites and non- Whites to prevent the "quagmire of mongrelization." Yet, this racial protectionism, as ingrained in law, blatantly exempted Indian blood from the threat to White racial purity. In Virginia, the Racial Integrity Act of 1924 made exceptions for Whites of mixed descent who proudly claimed Native American ancestry from Pocahontas. This Paper questions the juridical exceptions made for Native American ancestry in antimiscegenation statutes, and analyzes the concomitant exemptions in contemporary social practice. With …

Same-Sex Loving:Subverting White Supremacy Through Same-Sex Marriage, Adele M. Morrison Jan 2007

Same-Sex Loving:Subverting White Supremacy Through Same-Sex Marriage, Adele M. Morrison

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article marks the 40th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia- the landmark decision that responded to the question of the constitutionality of anti-miscegenation laws by firmly stating that the fundamental right to marry could not be restricted by race-by taking up the issue of the case's applicability in the context of same-sex marriage. The invocation of Loving has generally been in a manner that invites comparisons between interracial and same-sex marriage. Pro same-sex marriage arguments that utilize this comparison-which has come to be known as the "Loving Analogy"-- include the decision's freedom of choice and antidiscrimination elements, but rarely …

The Effect Of 1,25-Dihydroxy Vitamin D3 On At1 Cell Receptor Expression In Human Iliac Artery Endothelial Cells (Hiaec), Jenny Thomas Jan 2007

The Effect Of 1,25-Dihydroxy Vitamin D3 On At1 Cell Receptor Expression In Human Iliac Artery Endothelial Cells (Hiaec), Jenny Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays an important part in homeostasis through angiotensin IPs role as a vasoconstrictor. Defects in the renin angiotensin system can lead to hypertension, heart attack, and stroke (Weir, 1999). Studies have shown an inverse relationship between Vitamin D3 and blood pressure (Li et al., 2002). While studies have been performed on vitamin D's effect on renin expression, little is known about vitamin D's effect on the angiotensin II high-affinity type 1 (ATi) receptor. The hypothesis for this study was that human iliac artery endothelial cells (HIAEC) supplemented with 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 will express less AT] receptor …

Hildegard Von Bingen: German High School Teaching Unit, Gretchen Toth-Fejel

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This honors thesis is a four week German-language teaching unit based on learning about the medieval mystic and scholar Hildegard von Bingen. The unit was created in order to: 1) teach language-learning in an interesting and student-directed way, 2) encourage critical thinking in a foreign language context, 3) demonstrate a valid connection between language and culture and, finally, 4) to show women’s contributions as useful to society. The format for this unit is based on the model created by educational professional Dr. Madeline Hunter at the University of California at Berkley. After completing this unit a successful student should: 1) …

Concomitant Polymorphism In 1,2-Bis(9-Anthryl)Acetylene, Rebecca Goldstein Jan 2007

Concomitant Polymorphism In 1,2-Bis(9-Anthryl)Acetylene, Rebecca Goldstein

Honors Theses

This thesis details the serendipitous discovery of the phenomenon of concomitant conformational polymorphism found to exist in 1,2-bis(9-anthryl)acerylene. 1,2-bis(9anthryl)acetylene is a previously published molecule. However, the published crystal structure showed the molecule to be completely planar, and to crystallize in the form of orange needles. While this form of the crystal was indeed found during the synthesis of 1,2-bis(9anthryl)acetylene, a new polymorph, crystallizing as yellow prisms, was also discovered. This yellow polymorph was found by X-ray crystallography to be monoclinic with an angle of 66.7 between the anthracene planes. The planar polymorph 1,2-bis(9-anthryl)acetylene was also found by X-ray crystallography to …

Anhedonia And Depression: Anticipatory, Consummatory, And Recall Deficits, Kaitlin Hanley Jan 2007

Anhedonia And Depression: Anticipatory, Consummatory, And Recall Deficits, Kaitlin Hanley

Honors Theses

Current conceptions of anhedonia as a key symptom of depression do not consider the importance of anticipatory, consummatory, and recall deficits involved in anhedonia. Sixty-one depressed and non-depressed, college-student participants provided reports of anticipated pleasure to tasting chocolates, tasted chocolates and rated their experience of pleasure, and provided recalled reports of pleasure to the experience one day later. Results demonstrated a deficit in the ability to anticipate experiencing pleasure for depressed participants when compared to non-depressed controls, however, their reports of consummatory pleasure and recalled pleasure did not differ significantly from non-depressed control participants. This study suggests that actual experiential …

Collective Moral Responsibility, Allyson Rudolph Jan 2007

Collective Moral Responsibility, Allyson Rudolph

Honors Theses

What is collective moral responsibility? And why should you care? The answer to the former, like any good philosophical question, is largely unresolved. Although writing on collective responsibility has flourished, particularly in the wake of the Holocaust, and despite the existence of an increasingly consistent bibliography of essential writings in the field, there is no definitive authority on the subject. Unlike individual moral responsibility, however, there is little consensus among the ranks. Many theories disclaim the existence or the possibility of collective moral responsibility—a group is just not the sort of thing that can ever be considered a morally responsible …

Detailed Mechanistic And Optimization Of The Photochemical Production Method Of Superoxide, Ta-Chung Ong Jan 2007

Detailed Mechanistic And Optimization Of The Photochemical Production Method Of Superoxide, Ta-Chung Ong

Honors Theses

The highly reactive nature of superoxide anion presents an analytical challenge to prepare stable standards for instrument calibration. McDowell et al. (1983) developed a convenient method of superoxide production based on continuous photolysis of benzophenone and acetone in oxygen saturated, alkaline, 2-propanol solution. In the McDowell reaction, ketones are photolyzed to their triplet state, and then reacted with alcohol to produce ketyl radicals that react with oxygen to produce superoxide. This study investigated the mechanism and rate of these reactions by Laser Flash Photolysis (LFP). Reaction rate constants for the reaction between the benzophenone triplet and ethanol was 5.5 x …

Dialectics Of Diaspora Space: A Study Of Contemporary, Diasporic, South Asian Fiction, Christopher A. Zajchowski Jan 2007

Dialectics Of Diaspora Space: A Study Of Contemporary, Diasporic, South Asian Fiction, Christopher A. Zajchowski

Honors Theses

In light of these continuing debates concerning immigration, national identity and belonging, re-examinations of immigrant and ethnic communities, often referred to as ‘diaspora,’ have become increasingly popular and prudent. Khachig Tololian, editor of Diaspora magazine, calls diaspora “exemplary communities of the transnational moment.”5 In an increasingly globalized world, where labor, capital, and resources are passed fluidly from continent to continent, diaspora are created by relocation or displacement of immigrant workers and their descendents.6 For these unskilled, immigrant laborers, middle class immigrants, and the children of both groups, adaptation to the culture, society, and life in a new ‘host’ country can …

Gauguin : Generating Art Using Genetic Algorithms & User Input Naturally, Thomas E. Cook Jan 2007

Gauguin : Generating Art Using Genetic Algorithms & User Input Naturally, Thomas E. Cook

Honors Theses

This paper outlines an undergraduate research project demonstrating an application of evolutionary computation in the context of computer art. The project, named GAUGUIN, combines the visual impact of modern computer graphics with the computational power of genetic algorithms. GAUGUIN allows the user to become a creator of art, without requiring any technical or artistic training. By using an intuitive and easily comprehensible process like evolution to create the composition, the user simply needs to evaluate a sequence of compositions. Mimicking the biological process of evolution, the system will evolve the works in order to achieve images that are more visually …

Intramolecular Chemistry Of Ss-Acetoxyethylidene And Photochemical Generation Of Vinylidenes, Jennifer M. Nguyen Jan 2007

Intramolecular Chemistry Of Ss-Acetoxyethylidene And Photochemical Generation Of Vinylidenes, Jennifer M. Nguyen

Honors Theses

The parent carbene ß-acetoxyethylidene has been previously generated by the photolysis of its precursor, acetic acid 1a,9b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[l]phenanthren-1-yl methyl ester. Mechanistic studies on ß-acetoxyethylidene have indicated the possibilities of three rearrangement pathways to the formation of vinyl acetate: a proton shift, an acyl shift, and a cyclic rearrangement (see Figure 8). A deuterium labeling study involving the replacement of the hydrogens on the methylene carbon has indicated that the simple 1,2-H shift was the primary manner of rearrangement, with an 82% yield of product. However, a primary kinetic isotope effect may have occurred due to the greater strength of a C-D …

Women Making Progress?: A Study Of Wide Sargasso Sea As A Response To Jane Eyre, Kaitlin M. Gangl Jan 2007

Women Making Progress?: A Study Of Wide Sargasso Sea As A Response To Jane Eyre, Kaitlin M. Gangl

Honors Theses

I have always had a love for Victorian literature. Growing up I read Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Gaskell, and many more Victorian female writers I could get my mother to recommend. Reading and writing has been a passion of mine since I was young, and female writers (Victorian in particular) were always a particular favorite of mine. Despite my interest in this genre, I found myself reading Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) for the first time just two years ago while studying in London. I was taking a Nineteenth-Century British Literature course, and while I appreciated the works …

The Fate Of Nitrogren Fixed By Diazotrophs In The Ocean, Margaret R. Mulholland Jan 2007

The Fate Of Nitrogren Fixed By Diazotrophs In The Ocean, Margaret R. Mulholland

OES Faculty Publications

While we now know that N2 fixation is a significant source of new nitrogen (N) in the marine environment, little is known about the fate of this N (and associated C), despite the importance of diazotrophs to global carbon and nutrient cycles. Specifically, does N fixed during N2 fixation fuel autotrophic or heterotrophic growth and thus facilitate carbon (C) export from the euphotic zone, or does it contribute primarily to bacterial productivity and respiration in the euphotic zone? For Trichodesmium, the diazotroph we know the most about, the transfer of recently fixed N2 (and C) appears …
