On Being A Mentor: A Guide For Higher Education Faculty, Kathy Laboard Brown

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Review of W. Brad Johnson (2007). On Being a Mentor: A Guide/or Higher Education Faculty. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum. 234 pages. ISBN 0-8058-4896-7.

W. Brad Johnson set out to prepare a systematic guide for establishing good mentoring relationships in any higher education context. The guide is a framework for differentiating developmental concerns and the fundamental qualities and behaviors of excellent mentors from initiation through redefinition. Hargreaves and Fullan (2000) report that those involved in mentoring for the 21 st century are looking at a vital window of opportunity to recreate the profession.

Johnson makes a case for the importance …

First Record In Honduras Of The Halfbeak Hyporhampus Roberti Hildebrandi, Jordan And Everman 1927, (Hemiramphidae) Collected In An Inland Reservoir, Wilfredo A. Matamoros, Julio E. Merida, Janise Palmer Jan 2007

First Record In Honduras Of The Halfbeak Hyporhampus Roberti Hildebrandi, Jordan And Everman 1927, (Hemiramphidae) Collected In An Inland Reservoir, Wilfredo A. Matamoros, Julio E. Merida, Janise Palmer

Gulf and Caribbean Research

An inhabitant of tropical America, the Central American halfbeak (Hyporhamphus roberti hildebrandi), is one of 2 subspecies of halfbeaks of the subgenus Hyporhamphus (Collette 2003, Collette 2004) that belong to the family Hemiramphidae. This family has representatives from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans (Greenfield and Thomerson 1997, Berra 2001, Collette 2004), and nearly all species are marine; however, some Hemiramphidae species in the Indo-Australian region are restricted to freshwater (Greenfield and Thomerson 1997).

The distributional range of H. r. hildebrandi extends along the Caribbean coast of Central America from Mexico to the Gulf of Uraba in Colombia …

Color Variation In The Caribbean Crab Platypodiella Spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) (Decapoda, Brachyura, Xanthidae), Joel W. Martin, Todd L. Zimmerman Jan 2007

Color Variation In The Caribbean Crab Platypodiella Spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) (Decapoda, Brachyura, Xanthidae), Joel W. Martin, Todd L. Zimmerman

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The use of color in brachyuran crab systematics, and in particular the use of subtle color differences to suggest or differentiate cryptic or morphologically similar species, is now well documented (e.g., see Campbell and Mahon 1974 for species of Leptograpsus, Williams and Felder 1989 for species of Menippe, Zimmerman and Felder 1991 for species of Sesarma). Less clearly understood is why color patterns and intensities can sometimes vary appreciably within a species, even within narrowly restricted geographic regions. An appreciation of color patterns is critical to correctly identifying species for conservation and resource management purposes, yet often …

Swordfish Reproduction In The Atlantic Ocean: An Overview, Freddy Arocha Jan 2007

Swordfish Reproduction In The Atlantic Ocean: An Overview, Freddy Arocha

Gulf and Caribbean Research

There are 3 unit stocks of Atlantic swordfish, Xiphias gladius, separated into Mediterranean, North and South Atlantic with no precise delimitation between them, and each contains its spawning grounds far from stock boundary areas. This overview characterizes the reproductive information for each stock unit and describes reproductive metrics in detail. Spawning in the western North Atlantic consists of 2 spawning groups: one in open ocean waters and the other in waters close to land masses and fast current systems. Spawning occurs from December to June within the subtropical area (13°N-35°N). Within the Mediterranean, spawning takes place between June and …

At-Vessel Fishing Mortality For Six Species Of Sharks Caught In The Northwest Atlantic And Gulf Of Mexico, Alexia Morgan, George H. Burgess Jan 2007

At-Vessel Fishing Mortality For Six Species Of Sharks Caught In The Northwest Atlantic And Gulf Of Mexico, Alexia Morgan, George H. Burgess

Gulf and Caribbean Research

From 1994-2005 the Commercial Shark Fishery Observer Program (CSFOP) placed fishery observers aboard US bottom longline vessels engaged in directed fishing for sharks in the region from New Jersey to Louisiana, USA. Observers routinely recorded species specific at-vessel mortality as related to enduring the stress oflongline capture. Data for 5 species of sharks (sandbar Carcharhinus plumbeus, blacktip Carcharhinus limbatus, dusky Carcharhinus obscurus, tiger Galeocerdo cuvier, scalloped hammerhead Sphyrna lewini, and great hammerhead Sphyrna mokilrran) were analyzed in this study. Multiple stepwise linear regressions indicate that age group, soak time and bottom water temperature can …

Where Do We Go From Here? A Summary Of Issues Of Concern And Recommendations Developed During The Panel Discussion Of The Large Pelagic Fishes Symposium, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, James S. Franks, Mark S. Peterson, Patrick Mcconney, Brian E. Luckhurst Jan 2007

Luckhurst

Gulf and Caribbean Research

One of the goals of the Large Pelagic Fishes Symposium was to provide a forum for development of a list of Issues of Concern regarding large pelagic fishes and their fisheries in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico region. During the Symposium and ensuing Panel Discussion, it became clear that the level of consciousness concerning large pelagic fishes is of equal importance to that of other regional fisheries such as reef fishes and conch/lobster. Four major issues of concern regarding large pelagic fishes in the region surfaced during the Symposium. The Symposium Committee recommends that future resources and energy should …

Adaptive And Economic Management Methods For Feral Hog Control In Florida, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice U. Constantin, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Henry T. Smith, John Woolard, John Allen, John Dunlap Jan 2007

Adaptive And Economic Management Methods For Feral Hog Control In Florida, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice U. Constantin, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Henry T. Smith, John Woolard, John Allen, John Dunlap

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Feral hogs (Sus scrofa) negatively impact the environment in most places around the world where they have been introduced into the wild. In many places, hog removal is essential to protect special habitats, in particular, wetlands. This paper describes techniques developed for use in adaptive management approaches to enhance hog removal efforts in Florida, as well as methods to evaluate the economic impacts from hog management. A valuable adaptive management tool that can be an easily applied index to monitor feral hog activity is track plots. This method has been effective for monitoring hog distribution and relative abundance, …

The Law And Policy Beginnings Of Ecosystem Services, James Salzman, J.B. Ruhl Jan 2007

The Law And Policy Beginnings Of Ecosystem Services, James Salzman, J.B. Ruhl

Faculty Scholarship

This article is an introduction to a symposium issue of the journal on ecosystem services. As the brief descriptions of recent developments make clear, the field has changed greatly since the late 1990s and there are a lot of exciting developments underway. With the partnership of the Journal of Land Use & Environmental Law, we thought it important to revisit the state of the field five years after the Stanford workshop. Thus we invited experts across the range of environmental law to Florida State for a two-day workshop assessing the current status of ecosystem services in environmental law. The results …

Membrane Fragmentation By A 20-29 Fragment Of Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide And Rat Amyloid Polypeptide, Shyamprasad Samisetti Jan 2007

Membrane Fragmentation By A 20-29 Fragment Of Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide And Rat Amyloid Polypeptide, Shyamprasad Samisetti

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A key factor in the development of type II diabetes is the loss of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. The amyloidogenic human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (hIAPP, also known as human amylin) is believed to play a crucial role in this biological process. Previous studies have shown that hIAPP forms small aggregates that kill β-cells by disrupting the cellular membrane. In this study we report membrane fragmentation by hIAPP20-29 and the rat version, rIAPP20-29, using solid-state NMR experiments on nanotube arrays of anodic aluminum oxide containing aligned phospholipid membranes.

31P NMR results suggest that membrane fragmentation by hIAPP is related to peptide …

The Relative Retrotransposition Efficiencies Of Human And Mouse Short Interspersed Dna Elements (Sines) In A Hela Cell Culture Assay, Joseph Adam Katakowski Jan 2007

The Relative Retrotransposition Efficiencies Of Human And Mouse Short Interspersed Dna Elements (Sines) In A Hela Cell Culture Assay, Joseph Adam Katakowski

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Short interspersed DNA elements (SINEs) and long interspersed DNA elements (LINEs) represent two families of transposable elements (TEs) within mammalian genomes. About 45% of the human genome consists of TE derived sequences. SINEs do not encode protein, so they cannot be autonomously propagated and require additional cellular machinery, most likely LINE proteins (ORF1p and ORF2p), for their mobilization, which has been supported by a cell culture-based retrotransposition assay. SINEs are ancestrally derived from either the 7SL RNA gene or from various tRNA genes. Sequence data support the co-evolution of some tRNA-derived SINEs with LINEs. This study involved testing whether or …

Approval Of New Drugs By The U. S. Food And Drug Administration: Problems With The Process And Access To Unapproved Drugs, Christine M. Hoeft-Loyer Jan 2007

Approval Of New Drugs By The U. S. Food And Drug Administration: Problems With The Process And Access To Unapproved Drugs, Christine M. Hoeft-Loyer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Today, the vast majority of drugs available for patient use have gone through a rigorous system of human clinical trials supervised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to ensure the drugs are safe and efficacious. There are now citizen advocacy groups that seek use of drugs not yet approved by the FDA, to be administered to terminally ill patients who have exhausted all other available means of therapy. The FDA has programs for terminal patients, under the supervision of their physicians, to use unapproved drugs; however, the advocacy groups seek access to drugs in much earlier phases than is …

The Effect Of The Reducing Agent Triphenylphosphine On Arachidonic Acid Metabolism By Prostaglandin H2 Synthase, Lalini Ailaboina Jan 2007

The Effect Of The Reducing Agent Triphenylphosphine On Arachidonic Acid Metabolism By Prostaglandin H2 Synthase, Lalini Ailaboina

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Prostaglandin H2 synthase (PGHS) catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin endoperoxide (PGH2), which is a precursor to a variety of prostaglandins that function as hormones. Gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry is employed to look for the novel products produced by reaction of triphenylphosphine with arachidonic acid prior to and during the PGHS reaction. Triphenylphosphine (TPP) is known to reduce hydro peroxides to alcohols and is used in the present study to ascertain the extent to which hydroperoxides in arachidonic acid preparations and in PGHS contribute to enzyme activity. Incubation of PGHS with arachidonic acid that was treated …

Synthetic Biology: Caught Between Property Rights, The Public Domain, And The Commons, Arti K. Rai, James Boyle Jan 2007

Synthetic Biology: Caught Between Property Rights, The Public Domain, And The Commons, Arti K. Rai, James Boyle

Faculty Scholarship

Synthetic biologists aim to make biology a true engineering discipline. In the same way that electrical engineers rely on standard capacitors and resistors, or computer programmers rely on modular blocks of code, synthetic biologists wish to create an array of modular biological parts that can be readily synthesized and mixed together in different combinations. Synthetic biology has already produced important results, including more accurate AIDS tests and the possibility of unlimited supplies of previously scarce drugs for malaria. Proponents hope to use synthetic organisms to produce not only medically relevant chemicals but also a large variety of industrial materials, including …

Think Globally, Act Globally: The Limits Of Local Climate Policies, Jonathan B. Wiener Jan 2007

Think Globally, Act Globally: The Limits Of Local Climate Policies, Jonathan B. Wiener

Faculty Scholarship

State-level actions to address global climate change, such as laws and litigation recently undertaken by California and by several Northeastern states to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reflect creative legal strategies understandably intended to achieve a major environmental objective while the US federal government has not joined the Kyoto Protocol and has not yet adopted national legislation. But even assuming that forestalling global climate change is urgently needed, state-level action is not the best way to do so. Acting locally is not well suited to regulating moveable global conduct yielding a global externality. Legally, state-level action confronts several obstacles, including …

Negligence In The Air: The Duty Of Care In Climate Change Litigation, James Salzman, David Hunter Jan 2007

Negligence In The Air: The Duty Of Care In Climate Change Litigation, James Salzman, David Hunter

Faculty Scholarship

The prospect of tort litigation against private parties has been gaining increasing attention by lawyers. While only three such cases have been filed thus far, observers (including the organizers of this symposium) clearly expect the number to increase significantly. Indeed, if successful, these and future cases will have a huge impact on the industries sued and, as hopeful lawyers have mused, could make the tobacco litigation look small by comparison. But will these cases succeed? As law students all dutifully learn in their first year Torts class, a prima facie negligence claim must satisfy four elements - duty, breach, causation, …

Exploring Submarine Arc Volcanoes, Steven Carey, Haraldur Sigurdsson Jan 2007

Exploring Submarine Arc Volcanoes, Steven Carey, Haraldur Sigurdsson

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Three quarters of Earth’s volcanic activity occurs beneath the sea, predominantly along the extensive mid-ocean ridge system that winds its way through the major ocean basins. The style of eruptive activity along mid-ocean ridges has been extensively studied and well characterized. Submarine eruptions at mid-ocean ridges are dominated by effusive production of pillow and sheet-flow lavas at water depths of several thousands meters. The other major style of submarine eruptions occurs along island arcs where subduction of oceanic crust triggers melting of mantle rocks by the release of volatile components, such as water and carbon dioxide. Submarine volcanism constitutes an …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Extremely arid conditions in tropical Africa occurred in several discrete episodes between 135 and 90 ka, as demonstrated by lake core and seismic records from multiple basins [Scholz CA, Johnson TC, Cohen AS, King JW, Peck J, Overpeck JT, Talbot MR, Brown ET, Kalindekafe L, Amoako PYO, et al. (2007) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104:16416–16421]. This resulted in extraordinarily low lake levels, even in Africa's deepest lakes. On the basis of well dated paleoecological records from Lake Malawi, which reflect both local and regional conditions, we show that this aridity had severe consequences for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. During …

Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) was measured over the North Pacific and coastal California, Oregon and Washington in spring 2002 during the Intercontinental Transport and Chemical Transformation Experiment–2002 (ITCT2K2). Observations were made from the NOAA WP3 on 11 flights which spanned an altitude range of 0–8 km and latitudes between 35 and 55°N. GEM was determined using a Tekran 2537A mercury instrument modified for airborne use to collect and analyze samples every 2.5 min under variable ambient temperature and pressure conditions. GEM concentrations were in general at the low end of previous measurements made over continents and in fresh continental outflow …
