Relative Versus Non-Relative Foster Care: A Comparative Study, Victoria Picinich May 2007

Relative Versus Non-Relative Foster Care: A Comparative Study, Victoria Picinich

Social Work Theses

This study explored the benefits and limitations of relative foster care versus non-relative foster care. This study hypothesized, that despite the limitations of relative placement, the emotional benefit to the child placed in a relative setting far outweighs the challenges of it. The methodology employed quantitative and qualitative measurements. An in-depth questionnaire survey was mailed to 150 relative and 150 non-relative providers; and a focus group was facilitated. The study revealed that relative foster care, when available, is superior to non-relative foster care because of the emotional and social connection present as a result of the pre-existing relationship between the …

Lacole And Other Stories: Adaptations Of Three Of Edgar Allan Poe's Short Stories, Bethany Morgan May 2007

Lacole And Other Stories: Adaptations Of Three Of Edgar Allan Poe's Short Stories, Bethany Morgan

All Theses

This Master's thesis contains a creative adaptation of three of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories: 'Ligeia,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' and 'The Purloined Letter.' The stories reflect on certain elements from Poe's writings, but also stand alone as creative works. If the reader has never read Poe's stories, he or she will still understand and enjoy my stories. If the reader has read Poe's stories, he or she will enjoy the new approach to an old idea. The scholarship of my thesis delves into the art of adaptation, the psychological depths of some characters, the smaller judgments of civil …

Integrated Treatment Facility: An Alternative Care Setting For Adults With Mental Illness, Brenna Costello May 2007

Integrated Treatment Facility: An Alternative Care Setting For Adults With Mental Illness, Brenna Costello

All Theses

ABSTRACT The current model of community mental health care does not provide adequate therapeutic settings for many mentally ill patients to fully recovery. Due to this deficiency, patients are falling into a harmful cycle where they are admitted to the hospital through the emergency department, stabilized at the acute care setting, and discharged within a matter of days into the larger community where they have limited access to resources and support networks. At this point, patients become overwhelmed, have another event, and come full circle back to the emergency department. As a result, there is a drastic need for new …

Loose Change: The Seventh Circuit Misses An Opportunity To Clarify Money Laundering Law In United States V. Haddad, Daniel L. Snedigar

Seventh Circuit Review

In United States v. Haddad, a case of first impression for the Seventh Circuit, the court held that commingling of funds cannot serve to circumvent the transaction value limits imposed by 18 U.S.C. § 1957, one of the two primary federal money laundering statutes. The key component of any § 1957 violation is that the monetary transaction upon which the charge is based must be in an amount greater than $10,000 of illegally obtained funds. In cases where the accused money launderer has combined "clean" money with "dirty" money, it becomes difficult to determine whether the transaction in question …

From Court To Country: A Legal, Social And Political Analysis Of Privacy In The U.S., 1965-1974, Rachel Brady May 2007

From Court To Country: A Legal, Social And Political Analysis Of Privacy In The U.S., 1965-1974, Rachel Brady

Political Science Honors Projects

In its 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut holding, the Supreme Court declared privacy a fundamental right. President Johnson, Nixon and the media also publicly championed privacy rights at this time; yet, the legislature did not officially recognize the right to privacy until the Federal Privacy Act of 1974. I argue that the divergent privacy discourses between the Court and Congress gave privacy dual-momentums to take hold in America. This paper examines the politics of these nine years, which have been virtually overlooked as to how the concept of privacy evolved and became manifested in different efforts to actualize the newly emergent …

Assimilation Into A Therapeutic Community For Substance-Abusing Women, Joni Furlong May 2007

Assimilation Into A Therapeutic Community For Substance-Abusing Women, Joni Furlong

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Therapeutic communities provide structure, support and a safe living environment for individuals attempting to recover from addiction. Using peer influence, counseling, education, self-help groups, and case management, they assist residents in conforming to social norms and developing effective coping mechanisms while remaining drug-free. Prior studies have consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of these programs. But, why are they effective for some and not others? This study explored the residents1 backgrounds and the methods employed by them to assimilate into the therapeutic community, the recovering community, and then society at large. The data confirmed my suspicion that the women's ability to conform …

Grading And Instructional Evaluation Patterns Among Adjunct Faculty At A Two-Year College: A Mixed Methods Study, Pamela J. Lewis

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a mixed methods study designed to gather and analyze information on the grading and instructional evaluation patterns among adjunct faculty at two-year colleges. Quantitative data on assigned grades and student evaluation results for a group of 22 adjunct faculty members, who had taught on a continuing basis at a single community college over a five-year period, was collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics. A representative sub-group of eight of the 22 adjunct faculty was interviewed to respond to the quantitative findings on patterns in grading and student evaluations and possible links between the two and to add their …

Citizen's Arrest Or Police Arrest? Defining The Scope Of Alaska's Delegated Citizen's Arrest Doctrine, Lael Harrison May 2007

Citizen's Arrest Or Police Arrest? Defining The Scope Of Alaska's Delegated Citizen's Arrest Doctrine, Lael Harrison

Washington Law Review

When a citizen witnesses the commission of a misdemeanor, Alaska law allows that citizen to arrest the offender on the spot. A citizen making such an arrest may request assistance from a police officer rather than physically subduing the offender alone. However, Alaska law does not clearly define how much assistance police may give before the citizen's arrest becomes a warrantless police arrest. That distinction is particularly important in misdemeanor arrests because Alaska follows the common law rule that citizens and officers may make warrantless misdemeanor arrests only for those misdemeanors committed in their presence. Officers may not make warrantless …
