Adolescents And Marijuana Use: The Affects Of Peer And Parent Relationships And Substance Abuse Education., Samuel Joseph Cosimano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze gender, race, substance abuse programs such as Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), parents, and peers and their ability to influence or predict adolescents and their decisions to use marijuana. All of the variables used for this study came from secondhand data collected by Esbensen and Osgood (1999), Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.). The Implementation Of Drug Court Progams In Selected States: An Examination Of Government Influence, Lisa Ann Nored Aug 2007

The Implementation Of Drug Court Progams In Selected States: An Examination Of Government Influence, Lisa Ann Nored

Theses and Dissertations

With the merger of judicial supervision and mandated treatment, drug courts have given rise to therapeutic jurisprudence and attempt to address those issues which have plagued corrections policymakers for several decades. The evaluation literature indicates that drug courts tend to produce lower recidivism rates, increased retention rates and lower costs when compared to traditional programs. However, as drug courts approach their second decade, there is a void in the literature regarding the implementation of drug court programs. This study specifically examined those factors which either facilitate or challenge the implementation of drug court programs. This study examined implementation issues from …

Demographic Attributes And Economic Factors Related To Low Income Student Participation In Online Distance Learning Courses At A Mississippi Community College, Wesley Allen Payne Aug 2007

Demographic Attributes And Economic Factors Related To Low Income Student Participation In Online Distance Learning Courses At A Mississippi Community College, Wesley Allen Payne

Theses and Dissertations

Between 1994 and 2003, two related concerns were in the educational spotlight. The first concern was participation rates of low income students in higher education. The second was the apparent disparity in Internet usage by low income and other disadvantaged individuals, highlighted in the report Falling Through The Net (United States Department of Commerce, 2000). The purpose of this study is to identify the economic factors and demographic attributes that influence participation of low income students in online distance learning courses offered by a Mississippi community college. This study centers on the hypothesis that there is no statistically significant difference …

Development Of Conduct Problems In Girls: Testing Theoretical Models And Examining The Role Of Puberty, Cedar W. O'Donnell Aug 2007

Development Of Conduct Problems In Girls: Testing Theoretical Models And Examining The Role Of Puberty, Cedar W. O'Donnell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In an attempt to understand girls' involvement conduct problems, this dissertation first reviews two existing theoretical approaches that provide an explanation for the development of conduct problems. Specifically, the available literature on the development and correlates of conduct problems in boys suggests the subtypes of conduct disorder represent two developmental trajectories. The adolescent-onset pathway is associated with deviant peers and few characterological problems, where as the childhood-onset pathway is associated with emotion regulation deficits, negative parenting, callous and unemotional traits, and neurological deficits. Research also suggests a gender-specific model, the delayed-onset model, for the development of conduct problems in girls. …

The Perspectives Of Male Inmates Regarding Their K-12 Educational Experiences, Shannon Paul Lafargue Aug 2007

The Perspectives Of Male Inmates Regarding Their K-12 Educational Experiences, Shannon Paul Lafargue

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

All school systems throughout the country serve students referred to as at risk. Research documents that these students are at a greater risk of dropping out of school due to characteristics that contribute to school disengagement. By exploring the perspectives of male inmates aged 18-30 regarding their educational experiences, this study's data illuminated how school personnel and the schooling process may theoretically contribute to negative outcomes such as incarceration. The focus of the study was to identify commonalities and phenomena in relation to educational experiences, school engagement levels, deviant behavior, and school staff-student interactions as related to the at-risk student …
