Livestock keeping is critical for many of the poor in the developing world, often contributing to multiple livelihood objectives and offering pathways out of poverty. Livestock keeping also affects an indispensable asset of the poor, their human capital, through its impact on their own nutrition and health. This paper outlines the linkages between livestock keeping and the physical well-being of the poor, and examines a number of commonly held beliefs that misrepresent livestock development issues related to these linkages. These beliefs limit the scope of intervention programs to promote livestock and limit their potential contribution to poverty reduction. Recognition of …

Sustainable Antenatal Care Services In An Urban Indigenous Community: The Townsville Experience, Kathryn S. Panaretto, Melvina R. Mitchell, Lynette Anderson, Sarah L. Larkins, Vivienne Manessis, Petra G. Buettner, David Watson

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Objective: To evaluate the impact of a sustained, community-based collaborative approach to antenatal care services for Indigenous women.

Design: Prospective quality improvement intervention, the Mums and Babies program, in a cohort of women attending Townsville Aboriginal and Islanders Health Service, 1 January 2000 – 31 December 2005 (MB group), compared with a historical control group (PreMB group), 1 January 1998 – 30 June 1999.

Main outcome measures: Proportion of women having inadequate antenatal care and

screening; perinatal indicators. Results: Thenumberofantenatalvisitsperpregnancyincreasedfromthree

(interquartilerange[IQR],twotosix)inthePreMBgrouptosix(IQR,fourtoten)inthe MB group (P < 0.001). There were significant improvements in care planning, completion of cycle-of-care, and antenatal education activities throughout the study period. About 90% of all women attending for antenatal care were screened for sexually transmitted diseases, 89% had measurement of haemoglobin level, and serological tests for hepatitis B and syphilis (minimum antenatal screening). There was increased attendance for dating and morphology scans. In the MB group compared with the PreMB group, there was a significant reduction in perinatal mortality (14 v 60 per 1000 births; P=0.014). Conclusion: Sustained access to a community-based, integrated, shared antenatal service has improved perinatal outcomes among Indigenous women in Townsville.

Collaboration Addresses Information And Education Needs Of An Urban Public Health Workforce, Deborah H. Charbonneau, Ellen B. Marks, Annette M. Healy, Carrie F. Croatt-Moore

Library Scholarly Publications

Addressing the health information needs of diverse, multiethnic, and multilingual communities can be both a challenge and an opportunity for libraries. The Vera P. Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, is the only academic medical library in the Detroit area open to the public. The library provides services to many communities in southeastern Michigan. The diverse geographic area served by the library includes the nation’s highest concentration of Arab Americans. A review of the literature reveals that limited research has addressed how libraries can meet the health information needs of this target community. An understanding of …

Commentary On The U.N. International Law Commission's Draft Articles On The Law Of Transboundary Aquifers, Gabriel E. Eckstein

Ground water is the most extracted natural resource in the world. It provides more than half of humanity's freshwater for everyday uses such as drinking, cooking, and hygiene, as well as twenty percent of irrigated agriculture. Despite our increasing reliance, ground water resources have long been the neglected stepchild of international water law; regulation and management of and information about ground water resources are sorely lacking, especially in the international context. Presently, there is no international agreement squarely addressing ground water resources that traverse an international boundary. Moreover, there is only one treaty in the entire world pertaining to the …

Returning To The Circle: The Reemergence Of Traditional Dispute Resolution In Native American Communities, Jessica Metoui Jul 2007

Returning To The Circle: The Reemergence Of Traditional Dispute Resolution In Native American Communities, Jessica Metoui

Journal of Dispute Resolution

An examination of Native American cultural definitions of justice illustrates the cultural relevance of traditional dispute resolution processes. Because these alternative processes focus largely on community inclusion and the importance of party healing after a crime, concepts central to Native American worldview, traditional dispute resolution is superior to the mainstream adversarial court system for handling many criminal matters in the Native American context. The successes of traditional dispute resolution processes in Native American communities are also evidence of the potential cross cultural applications of such processes within the mainstream criminal justice system

International Market Entry And Organizational Competency Development: A Case Study Of A Russian Oil And Gas Joint Venture, Paul M. Stephenson, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

International Market Entry And Organizational Competency Development: A Case Study Of A Russian Oil And Gas Joint Venture, Paul M. Stephenson, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

We present an empirical study of competency development in a new joint venture, between a western firm and a Russian firm. Using transaction cost and knowledge management approaches, we propose working models for exploring the competency development dimension of a market entry strategy of the western firm in Russia. We consider organizational competency as measurable know-how, skills, behaviors, and attitudes of key employees that allows the company to meet their performance goals. Using a triangular case study approach the paper focuses on the well-site supervisor competency building process within the joint venture. We observe the critical elements of the competency …

Interdisciplinary Team Teaching: Lessons For Engineering Instructors From A Capstone Course In Environmental Studies, David Braun, Emmit B. Evans, Randall Knight, Thomas Ruehr

Electrical Engineering

The capstone course teaches students to analyze global environmental issues, resources, and human activities with a systems approach based on scientific, economic, political, social and ethical perspectives. Such an intrinsically multifaceted subject demands interdisciplinary treatment. To deliver the interdisciplinary treatment, the course uses diverse faculty teams comprised of faculty from fields in the natural and social sciences, engineering, and business. This work describes the interdisciplinary team teaching strategies adopted for the course and how they evolved with subsequent offerings of the course. We present assessment data measuring how well students achieve course objectives. Finally, experience gleaned from this course for …

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

In this paper we examine the relationship between the concept of social capital and the creation of effective global supply chains. Recent literature cites the effective global supply chain as a source of competitive advantage for firms competing in the global economy. Evidence exists that global firms now compete through the entire supply chain for each industry, raising the bar for strategic consideration. A global supply chain is comprised of multiple organizations, geographically dispersed, but linked by economic transactions, which enable the root firm to satisfy customer needs. The increase in information technology management is critical in coordinating the work …

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

This paper discusses the dynamics of competition in the financial services industry, and theories of competition that explain sometimes counter-intuitive effects observed over the last fifty years. We present arguments here that new forces are taking hold in the financial services industry that may change existing competition paradigms. Electronic banking is thriving in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. as customers click their mouse, press telephone keys, and slide cards to conduct their banking. Increasingly, banks and other financial service providers are starting to launch many of these same innovations in developing countries. Emerging markets are in the position of developing …

Edward W. Chance Dissertation Award: A Case Study: Leadership And Its Effect On Achievement Of Children From Poverty In A Rural Setting, Marilyn Dishman Horst, Barbara N. Martin

The Rural Educator

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived effectiveness of leadership in a Missouri rural K-8 school with a high incidence of poverty that consistently met federal and state accountability mandates. The concepts of accountability as measured by student achievement, the unique educational needs of children from poverty, and the challenges of the rural school location were viewed through the lens of leadership. Ten practices of leadership that lead to consistent student achievement were suggested. They include integrity and courage, focus and vision, expectations and data evaluation, resources and empowerment, role modeling, and collaboration. Implications of this study …

Integrating Globalization Into The Social Work Curriculum, Karen Smith Rotabi, Denise Gammonley, Dorothy N. Gamble, Marie O. Weil

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The reality that social work is a global profession is explored. Authors encourage a broadening of social work education, moving beyond the traditional conception of"internationalized"to a "globalized" social work curriculum. Practical teaching strategies for a globalized perspective are presented with selected key concepts specifically applied to social policy, community practice, human behavior in the social environment, and sustainable development. Discussion includes macro-scale ethical considerations in a neoliberal economic system.

Community College Partnerships With Business And Industry, Maryann Sharpley Lavender Jun 2007

Community College Partnerships With Business And Industry, Maryann Sharpley Lavender

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze and interpret the expectations and outcomes of industry partnerships with community colleges to determine their value, emerging themes that have contributed to their success or demise, and whether the goals initially set forth in establishing these partnerships was achieved. This study is based upon resource dependency theory, which proposed that if government and state funding given in support of community college education was diminishing, then the need is to better understand the value of and how community college and industry partnerships are working toward continuation. Resource dependency theory revolves around the …

Smart Growth Initiatives And Their Ability To Enhance The National Security Of The U.S., Donald Letterle

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The beginning of the 21st Century has presented the United States with many new challenges. One of the most significant challenges we face are domestic and foreign security issues. Though traditionally the U.S. has relied on military and law enforcement agencies to address security related matters, in the wake of new pressing concerns such as terrorism, foreign fuel reliance and environmental degradation it has become apparent that other alternatives must be examined. One such alternative is the implementation of smart growth initiatives into current urban and sub-urban planning processes. The implementation of these initiatives into existing and new development will …
