Swosu Fact Book Fall 2007, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the sixteenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Sports And The Law: Using Court Cases To Teach Sports Economics, Victor Matheson Sep 2007

Sports And The Law: Using Court Cases To Teach Sports Economics, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, it lays forth a rationale for the use of court cases in teaching a sports economics class. Second, it provides an overview of the most important cases related to sports economics. Court classes allow students to develop critical reading and reasoning skills while allowing the instructor to present readings outside the standard textbook that are accessible to most undergraduates. A sports economics course with a focus on legal issues also broadens the course to fit better within a liberal arts education rather than being a narrow speciality field.

Baseball Milestones: Barry, Alex, And Tom, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 2007

Baseball Milestones: Barry, Alex, And Tom, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over two weeks ago before taking a short vacation to escape the heat and humidity of Florida, I saw the Barry Bonds home run that tied Henry Aaron. That same day Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run and all those fans with steroid anxiety suddenly discovered a new hero. Even before Bonds had officially passed Aaron, A-Rod became the Great Clean Hope who would surpass "Mr. Bonds," as Bud Selig so warmly called him, and bring the home run crown back to the kind of people who hold it by divine fiat. The next day Tom Glavine won his …

Do Fans Want Close Contests? A Test Of The Uncertainty Of Outcome Hypothesis In The National Basketball Association, Daniel A. Rascher, John Paul G. Solmes Aug 2007

Do Fans Want Close Contests? A Test Of The Uncertainty Of Outcome Hypothesis In The National Basketball Association, Daniel A. Rascher, John Paul G. Solmes

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

The National Basketball Association claims to sell entertainment. Part of that entertainment is dose, competitive contests with uncertain outcomes. Howeyer, hometown fans want the home team to win. Hence, optimal probability that the home team wins a game from the perspective of maximizing demand, lays somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0. Using data from individual games for the 2001-02 season, this optimal probability was estimated to be approximately 0.66. Fans want their home team to have about twice the chance to win a game as the visiting team. Reprinted by permission of the publisher.

The Effect Of Sporting Event Levels On Fan Motivation Factors, Amber Rickard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Over the years much research has been completed on the motivations sport fans have for attending different sporting events. However, very little has been completed in the area of fan motivation at different levels of the same type of sport. The current research study addressed the hole in the literature and examined the motivational profiles of sport fans attending different levels of the same sport. The research also addressed how event level affects the level of identification with a being a fan of a particular team. We asked 224 fans at five different levels of baseball games in the mid-south …

International Student-Athlete Perception Of College Sport And Its Effect On Adjustment To College., Nels Popp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the 2004-05 school year, over 10,000 international student-athletes competed for National Collegiate Athletic Association schools (NCAA, 2006b). Few researchers have examined how international student-athletes' college experiences compare to domestic student-athletes. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to adaptation to college, (b) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to their view of the purpose of college sports, and (c) to determine whether student-athletes' views on the purpose of college sport help predict social adjustment to college or institutional attachment. A national sample of international …

College Students' Perceptions Of Dialects, Leigh Smitley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this investigation was to determine college students' perceptions of their own dialects and 4 specific dialects common to the English language. To determine this, the investigator developed a 3-part survey (Appendices H, I, J). On Part I, respondents completed identifying information. On Part II, they rated 9 general Likert Scale items related to dialect. On Part III, they completed the same semantic differential scale for speakers who represented 4 different dialects: Appalachian-American, Eastern-American, General-American, and African-American. There were 2 speakers for each dialect, i.e., 1 male and 1 female.;On Part I, respondents who completed a 3-part survey …

Big Men On Campus: Estimating The Economic Impact Of College Sports On Local Economies, Robert Baade, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson Aug 2007

Big Men On Campus: Estimating The Economic Impact Of College Sports On Local Economies, Robert Baade, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

College football and men’s basketball are the largest revenue generators in college athletics. Studies funded by athletic boosters tout the economic benefits of a college athletic program as an incentive for host cities to construct new stadiums or arenas at considerable public expense. Our analysis of the economic impact of home football and men’s basketball games on Tallahassee (home of Florida State University) and Gainesville (home of the University of Florida) between 1980 to early-2007 fails to support these claims. Men’s basketball games at these universities have no statistically significant impact on taxable sales, while football yields a modest gain …
