They're Making All The Wrong Decisions - Unintended Consequences Of Empowerment Resulting From Individual Situated Cognition, Jonathan Coleman
They're Making All The Wrong Decisions - Unintended Consequences Of Empowerment Resulting From Individual Situated Cognition, Jonathan Coleman
Student Scholarship
This paper describes how organizational culture affects individual level decision making processes in large organizations. This is particularly notable in the effect on the relative communication of qualitative versus quantitative information. Different levels of success in communicating these two kinds of information affect the development of the situated cognition prior to making a particular decision. We present the findings of a qualitative research study of thirteen executive level decision makers representing four Fortune 100 companies from four diverse industries. These executives were involved in strategic decisions in the normal course of business and also had particular experience in decisions involving …
Organizational Trauma: A Phenomenological Study Of Leaders In Traumatized Organizations, Shana D. Lynn Hormann
Organizational Trauma: A Phenomenological Study Of Leaders In Traumatized Organizations, Shana D. Lynn Hormann
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
While some organizations die when trauma erupts, others do not succumb. They live and even thrive. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1. To learn from leaders their perspectives about key conditions that allow organizations to withstand and heal from organizational trauma; and, 2. To inform practice about building and strengthening these conditions in organizations. Participants were leaders who led their organizations during an organizational trauma or who came into programs after the trauma occurred to facilitate recovery. Nine executive directors for sexual assault programs participated in this hermeneutic phenomenological study, sharing their experiences and reflections. Two composite depictions …
Student-Instructor Conflict: The Relationship Between Instructor Communicative Characteristics And Student Conflict-Handling Styles., Karissa L. Zigarovich
Student-Instructor Conflict: The Relationship Between Instructor Communicative Characteristics And Student Conflict-Handling Styles., Karissa L. Zigarovich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine student conflict-handling styles in regard to six perceived instructor communication traits: humor, relevance, clarity, affinity seeking, caring, and verbal aggressiveness. Participants were 286 undergraduate students enrolled in sociology courses at a large Mid-Atlantic university. Results indicated that (a) students who perceive their instructor as humorous, relevant, clear, engaging in affinity seeking and caring, but not verbally aggressive are likely to use cooperative (i.e., collaborating, compromising) conflict-handling styles; (b) students who perceive their instructor as clear are likely to not use an uncooperative (i.e., avoiding) conflict-handling style; (c) students who perceive their instructor …

From Martz To The Twenty-First Century: A Half- Century Of Natural Resources Law Casebooks And Pedagogy, Michael C. Blumm, David H. Becker
From Martz To The Twenty-First Century: A Half- Century Of Natural Resources Law Casebooks And Pedagogy, Michael C. Blumm, David H. Becker
University of Colorado Law Review
Clyde Martz published the first natural resources law casebook in 1951, combining the previously discrete subjects of water law, mining law, and oil and gas law. Martz relied almost exclusively on case excerpts and emphasized the creation of private rights in natural resources. Over the nexthalf century, through several generations of casebooks, the natural resources course developed in response to the rise of the environmental movement and a series of energy crises. This article traces the evolution of the natural resources law casebooks from Martz's pioneering effort through several generations of texts to a new generation of casebooks that has …

A Theory Of Curriculum Development In The Professions: An Integration Of Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory With Schwab's Deliberative Curriculum Theory, Shelley Ann Chapman
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
A hundred years ago, the problem with professional education was that it lacked a sound scientific foundation and opportunities for clinical practice. Throughout the past three decades, discussions on graduate professional education have focused on how to improve the theory/practice continuum, either through new formats or strategies, or by emphasizing one over the other. However, with the new century, new problems have emerged within the professional education arena. This dissertation has focused on two main problems in graduate professional education in the early 21st century: students are focusing too much on technical expertise and not enough on becoming transformed into …

This study aims to understand the antecedents of knowledge sharing behavior amongst tenant firms in Science and Technology Parks (STPs) which has been highlighted as a key factor for the development of an epistemic culture of innovation in STPs. Components of a model of knowledge management leadership with a focus on knowledge sharing and innovative value creation in STPs are developed inspired by the work of Nonaka, Nahapiet and Ghoshal, Guns and others. Collection of data on various relevant measures is ongoing, covering technology firms and STPs in Singapore and other Asian countries. Besides outlining model components and hypotheses, tentative …

Parker Palmer On Servant-Leadership: An Interview, Michael Lieberman Carey, Mike Poutiatine, Shann Ferch
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The following transcript is excerpted from an interview with Parker Palmer conducted for the Gonzaga University online Servant-Leadership Mentor Gallery. Questions have been removed for freedom of content flow. Parker Palmer: What really fascinates me is how visible our brokenness is. A rational person would think nobody needs to be led toward seeing it or understanding it; it's all around us all the time. It's on the nightly news and it's in the morning newspaper and it's in the self-reports that people give of their own lives. So I think we're talking about a network of mythologies or illusions that …

The Network Of Mutual Relations As The Source Of Competitive Advantage Of Small Enterprises On The Market, Svetlana Gudkova
European Management Studies
The paper is devoted to the network of relations developed by entrepreneurs. Based on her empirical research, the author analyzes the role of personal contacts for the development of small enterprises. The paper starts with an analysis of the theoretical concepts developed in the fields of management and enterprise as well as sociology and psychology. The literature on the networks of relations has been developing in two primary directions, the structural and the relational one, within which the researchers have been focusing on a variety of characteristics and other types of links embedded in them. The second section of the …
The Canon Of American Legal Thought, Robert E. Rodes
The Canon Of American Legal Thought, Robert E. Rodes
Journal Articles
Professors Kennedy and Fisher have put together a book containing twenty essays, most of them first published in law reviews. They are elegantly presented, and each is preceded by an introductory essay by one of the editors, which provides background information on the author, analyzes the piece lucidly and succinctly, and situates it in the development of American legal thought. Each piece is also preceded by a bibliography, which further situates it by describing the rest of the author's work and summarizing the commentary it has evoked. All the works are given in full, adding considerably to what can be …

Corruption Improves Efficiency: An Erroneous Belief, Naved Ahmad
Business Review
Corruption plays a destructive role in the progress and development of any society. Countries around the globe are facing the problem of corruption, albeit in different degrees. The topic of corruption received immense attention during the late 1990s when a stream of systematic empirical studies emerged to examine its causes and effects. Moreover, the debate on the beneficial and detrimental effects of corruption gets central position in the empirical literature.

Frequent Use Of Psychiatric Emergency Services: A Multilevel Approach, Andrew William White
Frequent Use Of Psychiatric Emergency Services: A Multilevel Approach, Andrew William White
Open Access Dissertations
There is limited information available regarding individuals who make frequent use of psychiatric emergency services. In particular, there is little agreement in the research literature around individual predictors of frequent use, and no existing literature on neighborhood level characteristics that influences frequent use. The current study combines individual level data from an urban psychiatric emergency room with census tract data to examine group and individual predictors of frequent use. Results suggest the presence of several individual level risk factors, such as the existence of a psychotic disorder, presence of dual diagnosis, and lack of health insurance. Tract level predictors are …

In response to anecdotal concerns that student enrollment in "outsider" courses, and in particular feminist courses, is on the decline in Canadian law schools, the authors explore patterns of course enrollment at seven Canadian law schools. Articulating a definition of "outsider" that describes those who are members of groups historically lacking power in society, or traditionally outside the realms of fashioning, teaching, and adjudicating the law, the authors document the results of quantitative and qualitative surveys conducted at their respective schools to argue that outsider pedagogy remains a critical component of legal education. The article situates the numerical survey results …

Police Powers, Trespass And Expressive Rights Under The Canadian Constitution, W. Wesley Pue
All Faculty Publications
This paper traces the history of the ancillary police powers doctrine in Canadian police law/ constitutional law over the past 40 years. It identifies a doctrine creep wherein a heading of police power which had modest origins has expanded massively. The expansion is spatial and conceptual and reached its reductio ad absurdum when the entire central area of Quebec city was zoned into no-go areas by police acting without legislative authority, claiming the right to erect barricades in public streets, to issue passes (or not) as necessarily ancillary to police powers. The paper includes the only English translation of the …
Reaching Out To The Faculty: Providing Subject-Specific Academic Resources, John Jaeger
Reaching Out To The Faculty: Providing Subject-Specific Academic Resources, John Jaeger
The Christian Librarian
Library journals frequently have articles emphasizing the large gulf that seems to exist between academic librarians and teaching faculty members.1 Librarians view this divide as a serious problem and have suggested different strategies to overcome it. Ideas that have received particular prominence include establishing library liaison relationships, providing course-integrated instruction, and encouraging library/faculty research collaboration.
This article focuses primarily on a different method of engaging the faculty. Regularly sending teaching faculty helpful articles and web sites related to their academic disciplines is an easy and effective way to do outreach.

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
he most recent trend in historic preservation has led many in the field to pay attention to cultural landscapes as historic resources. Considering buildings, structures, or objects within a given spatial and physical setting, or landscape, endows them with historic significance and context that would be absent if viewed individually. While this is somewhat of an expansive approach to the built environment, this trend in historic landscape interpretation still does not account for all types of resources that one finds in the field. A fragmentary landscape is a cultural landscape defined by three characteristics: 1) the presence of buildings, structures, …

Religious Dogmatism And Civil Liberties: Literalism, Atheism, And Homosexuality., Kevin R. Hart
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between religious dogmatism and support for civil liberties of atheists and homosexuals. Utilizing data from the 2002 GSS, the assertions of the theory of religious dogmatism (Jelen & Wilcox 1990) were tested by utilizing three increasing measure of religiosity: religious preference, church attendance, and Biblical perception in predicting support for atheist and homosexual civil liberties. The results support the notion of religious dogmatism as influencing acceptance of nonconformist civil liberties, with Biblical perception being the most potent predictor. Additional findings indicate education as a significant predictor of support for civil …
Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell
Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Welfare recipients have always been stigmatized. The welfare reform legislation of 1996 reflects widespread attitudes and stereotypes of welfare recipients, which are translated into the structure of state welfare programs and are carried down through the administration to the welfare caseworker—the “face” of welfare for recipients. Literature on welfare stigma has focused on clients, but not their caseworkers. Using qualitative methods, this paper presents a Goffmanian analysis of the effects of welfare stigma on these caseworkers, who not only interact with clients in their jobs everyday, but who also implement a stigmatizing social program. The caseworkers in this study constructed …

Where It's At: Testing Urban Residential Preferences Of Creative And Noncreative Classes Of College Students., Robert Benjamin Travis Decola
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis uses data collected from a larger survey about residential preferences of undergraduate college students to show that a distinct group of creative students has a statistically significant preference for an urban residence. In addition to predicting urban residential preferences, students who have a creative major also have a significantly higher desire for bohemian cultural amenities. Regression results indicate that having a creative major mediates the direct effect of desiring bohemian cultural amenities on the preference for an urban residential environment. The evidence suggests that having a creative major socializes individuals into valuing bohemian cultural amenities in order to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As journalism moves ahead in the 21st Century, alternate methods of presentations could distort the information and messages presented. This thesis examines the presence of such distortions in broadcast journalism. Analyzing three types of programs ñ the traditional nightly news broadcast, the political pundit commentary/news broadcast and satirical/fake news broadcast, the study examines some of their characteristics to see how they compare and contrast. Methodologies include a quantitative content analysis, along with a descriptive observation and analysis of the data set. Research concludes that these programs have many similarities in their methods of presentation and inclusion of entertainment, but differ …
