Contextual Empowerment: The Impact Of Health Brigade Involvement On The Women Of Miraflor, Nicaragua, Gayla Jewell

Peer Reviewed Articles

This qualitative, descriptive study investigated how working with Health Brigades influenced a sense of empowerment and a resultant shifting of gender-power relationships for women in a rural Nicaraguan community. A convenience sample of 10 women aged 18 to 65 years who had worked with the Brigades were interviewed. Open and axial coding were used to determine core categories and theoretical concepts. From this emerged a grounded theory of contextual empowerment. Key findings included that within this collectivist culture, the concept of contextual empowerment includes psychosocial and structural dimensions. Implications for nursing practice include the impact of unintentional role modeling.

Acculturative Stress, Social Support, And Coping: Relations To Psychological Adjustment Among Mexican American College Students, Lisa J. Crockett, Maria I. Iturbide, Rosalie A. Torres Stone, Meredith Mcginley, Marcela Raffaelli, Gustavo Carlo

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examined the relations between acculturative stress and psychological functioning, as well as the protective role of social support and coping style, in a sample of 148 Mexican American college students (67% female, 33% male; mean age = 23.05 years, SD = 3.33). In bivariate analyses, acculturative stress was associated with higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Moreover, active coping was associated with better adjustment (lower depression), whereas avoidant coping predicted poorer adjustment (higher levels of depression and anxiety). Tests of interaction effects indicated that parental support and active coping buffered the effects of high acculturative stress on …

How Do I Feel About The Behavior? The Interplay Of Affective Associations With Behaviors And Cognitive Beliefs As Influences On Physical Activity Behavior, Marc T. Kiviniemi, Amy M. Voss-Humke, April L. Seifert

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Individuals have affective associations with health behaviors. In other domains such associations have been shown to influence behavior, but affective associations with health behaviors are not included in current health decision-making models. The authors examined whether affective associations with exercise predicted individuals’ activity behavior and, if so, how they interfaced with other decision-making constructs to influence behavior. Adult participants (N = 433) reported their current physical activity behavior and affective associations with physical activity. Health belief model and theory of planned behavior constructs were also assessed. More positive affective associations with activity significantly predicted greater activity behavior. Moreover, the …

Democratic Theory In Lis: Toward An Emendation, John Buschman Jan 2007

Democratic Theory In Lis: Toward An Emendation, John Buschman

Library Publications

Despite quantities of popular rhetoric, democratic theory holds an aposiopetic place within library and information science (LIS) in both senses of that word: It is both in a stasis holding to basic ideas outlined 200 years ago and also a silence largely maintained. A review of a number of state-of-the-literature reviews make the case that it has not been systematically explored or applied, and most LIS work elides the questions democratic theory raises. It is time to emend this and account for a relevant intellectual source which can more firmly ground LIS practice and research in normative terms. Toward that …

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This project indicates that individuals who completed a high school degree, a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree have substantial differences in earnings. Drawing data from the Current Population Survey for February 2005 and employing an Ordinary Least Square regression technique, this paper examines the determinants that significantly influence the logarithmic hourly earnings of an individual who completed a high school degree, a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree. Overall, this project suggests that level of education, sex, age, gender, union membership, geographical region and race are the relevant factors that play an important role in determination of hourly earnings …

Majority Politics And Race Based Remedies, Darren L. Hutchinson Jan 2007

Majority Politics And Race Based Remedies, Darren L. Hutchinson

Faculty Articles

This Essay applies the principles of social movement theory and analyzes the legal status of race-based remedies. Many scholars have debated the constitutionality and efficacy of affirmative action, the appropriateness of race-consciousness (from legal and social perspectives) and the legitimacy of structural judicial remedies for various types of discrimination. This paper will add to this literature by demonstrating the influence of conservative race politics and ideology on Court doctrine concerning affirmative action and other race-based remedies. In particular, this Essay will demonstrate that, consistent with broader political trends, the Court disfavors governmental usage of race as a remedy for discrimination …

Mediating Social Anxiety And Disordered Eating: The Role Of Expressive Suppression, Carmen P. Mclean, Nathan A. Miller, Debra A. Hope Jan 2007

Mediating Social Anxiety And Disordered Eating: The Role Of Expressive Suppression, Carmen P. Mclean, Nathan A. Miller, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Social anxiety and disordered eating frequently overlap, and evidence suggests that emotional suppression may be an important mediating factor. The present study examines the relationships among social anxiety, emotional suppression, and disordered eating in a nonclinical sample of 160 undergraduate women. Participants completed self-report measures for social anxiety, disordered eating, expressive suppression, depression, and negative affect. Results from mediation analyses indicate that the relationship between social anxiety and disordered eating is fully mediated by expressive suppression. Findings are consistent with a displacement theory in which unexpressed negative affect is shifted toward the body, thereby promoting symptoms of disordered eating.

'Prisoner Never Gave Me Anything For What He Done:' Aboriginal Voices In The Criminal Court, Shelley A. M. Gavigan Jan 2007

'Prisoner Never Gave Me Anything For What He Done:' Aboriginal Voices In The Criminal Court, Shelley A. M. Gavigan

Articles & Book Chapters

Aboriginal people participated in different ways in the criminal process in the early years of the North-West Territories region of Canada, including, as accused persons, as Informants, and as witnesses. Their physical participation was often mediated by interpreters, both linguistic and cultural, and their signatures invariably marked “X” on their depositions. Scholarship that has examined the relationship of Aboriginal peoples to the criminal law has tended to interrogate the criminalization and moral regulation strategies implicit in the process of colonization and domination of the First Peoples. This paper will discuss less visible aspects of the legalized processes of colonization: (1) …

Theorizing The Law/Politics Distinction: Neutral Principles, Affirmative Action, And The Enduring Insight Of Paul Mishkin, Neil S. Siegel, Robert C. Post Jan 2007

Theorizing The Law/Politics Distinction: Neutral Principles, Affirmative Action, And The Enduring Insight Of Paul Mishkin, Neil S. Siegel, Robert C. Post

Faculty Scholarship

Early in his career Mishkin saw that the law could be apprehended from two distinct and in part incompatible perspectives: from the internal perspective of a faithful practitioner and from the external perspective of the general public. If the social legitimacy of the law as a public institution resides in the latter, the legal legitimacy of the law as a principled unfolding of professional reason inheres in the former. Mishkin came to believe that although the law required both forms of legitimacy, there was nevertheless serious tension between them, and he dedicated his scholarly career to attempting to theorize this …

Hospitality Versus Patronage: An Investigation Of Social Dynamics In The Third Epistle Of John, Igor Lorencin Jan 2007

Hospitality Versus Patronage: An Investigation Of Social Dynamics In The Third Epistle Of John, Igor Lorencin

Dissertations

Problem. This investigation focuses on social dynamics in the third epistle of John. In the context of 3 John hospitality and patronage seem to be opposed as two non-compatible models of behavior. In what sense they are different and what makes them non compatible in a church setting is the main focus of this research.

Method. A social approach is utilized in this investigation for the purpose of understanding the social system, values, and circumstances that shaped the events of 3 John. I first collect evidence to explain the ancient customs of hospitality and patronage in order to create a …
