Examining Nostra Aetate After 40 Years: Catholic-Jewish Relations In Our Time, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed. Jan 2007

Examining Nostra Aetate After 40 Years: Catholic-Jewish Relations In Our Time, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed.

Sacred Heart University Press Books

On October 28, 1965, the Catholic bishops of the world voted to approve the shortest and perhaps most controversial document of Vatican II, Nostra Aetate, which addresses the relationship of the Catholic Church to non-Christians. Significantly, it signaled to the Jewish people and to the world that the Catholic Church was rethinking its attitudes, teachings and practices regarding Jews.

More than 40 years later, editor Anthony J. Cernera, Ph.D., former president of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, presents a volume of essays describing the past, present and future of the Nostra Aetate story. It calls attention to the …

Care Patterns And Outcomes For Hospitalized Patients With Diabetes In Nevada, Jay J. Shen Jan 2007

Care Patterns And Outcomes For Hospitalized Patients With Diabetes In Nevada, Jay J. Shen

Nevada Journal of Public Health

This study demonstrates substantial differences between Nevada and the national average in patterns of hospital based care in patients with type 2 diabetes. Diabetic patients in Nevada are more likely to be hospitalized through the emergency department, and more likely to be admitted for a condition related to diabetes. Moreover, in Nevada, Medicaid and uninsured patients with diabetes are more likely to experience adverse outcomes then their privately insured counterparts. These differences may be primarily reflective of variances in access to ambulatory care, care seeking behavior, and availability of health services and facilities. Policies promoting expansion of health care benefits …

Lighting The Torch Of Human Rights: The Olympic Games As A Vehicle For Human Rights Reform, Julie H. Liu Jan 2007

Lighting The Torch Of Human Rights: The Olympic Games As A Vehicle For Human Rights Reform, Julie H. Liu

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games provides an opportunity to better China's human rights record through the authority of the International Olympic Committee as a nongovernmental organization and through China's own self-interest in embracing the international spotlight of the Games. The Beijing Games is a chance to utilize the prestige of hosting the Games to transform a nation's human rights record and to set a precedent for human rights worldwide. The use of the Games as a vehicle for human rights reform can effectuate political and social change.

African Americans' Perspectives On Racial Solidarity, Paula Thompson Ross Jan 2007

African Americans' Perspectives On Racial Solidarity, Paula Thompson Ross

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored the fundamental formulations that shape perspectives on racial solidarity among one group of African Americans. The perspectives gained in this study aid in understanding the existence, origin, and views toward the concept. In-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with individuals from two generational cohorts: ages 18 to 30 (post-Civil Rights era) and ages 50 and older (Civil Rights era).

This study describes a process by which racial solidarity appears to have diminished among some African Americans. This transition seems to have occurred as a result of the deterioration of the traditional African American community, the acceptance of externally …

Sex Offenders, Sexuality, And Social Control: A Case Study In The Social Construction Of A Social Problem, Lisa Marie Kruse Jan 2007

Sex Offenders, Sexuality, And Social Control: A Case Study In The Social Construction Of A Social Problem, Lisa Marie Kruse

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Legislation regarding sex offenses is often passed swiftly with little to no evaluation of the effectiveness of such policies on preventing recidivism and protecting the public. Further, little criticism is raised despite overwhelming evidence that sex offender registration and community notification is ineffective and has many negative consequences. The societal reaction is created through moral panics resulting in views that are not always reflective of the nature of the problem. In effect, the policies put into place in the name of declaring war on the deviant behavior reflect these views and do not target the specific problem.

While the first …

Disparities In Access To Healthcare: The Case Of A Drug And Alcohol Abuse Detoxification Treatment Program Among Minority Groups In A Texas Hospital, Alberto Coustasse, Karan P. Singh, Fernando M. Trevino Jan 2007

Disparities In Access To Healthcare: The Case Of A Drug And Alcohol Abuse Detoxification Treatment Program Among Minority Groups In A Texas Hospital, Alberto Coustasse, Karan P. Singh, Fernando M. Trevino

Management Faculty Research

The authors analyzed ethnic/racial disparities in healthcare access and length of stay from a defined population of individuals seeking medical detoxification services at a hospital in Texas. Results indicated Blacks were more likely to be insured compared with Whites, mostly by public insurance, but this did not hold for Hispanics, who were about three times more likely to be uninsured compared with Blacks. In addition, the authors observed lower median of length of stay in the Medicaid category among Hispanics. These results can be explained by aggressive case management, sociocultural barriers, or discriminatory practices, both intentional and unintentional.
