Cass Mastern, Josiah Royce, And The Envelope Of Responsibility, Joseph Wensink Jan 2007

Cass Mastern, Josiah Royce, And The Envelope Of Responsibility, Joseph Wensink

Robert Penn Warren Studies

In Warren’s All the King’s Men, Jack’s ultimate reconciliation does not come, as most readers see it, from learning to accept full responsibility for his actions where he formerly had none, but rather from his ability to define for himself, through his historical researches and creation of iconic “images,” a clear picture of the boundaries of his responsibility—its burdens as well as its limits. This envelope of responsibility is for Warren thoroughly historical—and envelope whose contours change through time, crucially dependent upon the narration of past events in the present. Jack’s “brass-bound idealism” is, despite his sarcasm, a quite sophisticated …

Out Of The Cabbage Patch, Gary R. Brown Jan 2007

Out Of The Cabbage Patch, Gary R. Brown

Office of Academic Innovation Publications

It is not a secret to readers of EDUCAUSE Review that the challenge of curricular relevance and student engagement in higher education is a national concern. One aspect of this challenge is that students' social networking and technology proclivities are rarely met by conventional curricula and pedagogies. Educators have much to lose if we fail to transform current practice. Just how much we have to lose was profoundly illustrated to me on a recent trip I took to Malawi, Africa, where a group of educators and an affiliate non-governmental organization (NGO) have been working to expand opportunities for Washington State …

From Mice To Men: Genetic Doping In International Sports, Kristin Jo Custer Jan 2007

From Mice To Men: Genetic Doping In International Sports, Kristin Jo Custer

UC Law SF International Law Review

Elite athletes have a long history of using various doping methods to enhance performance, from ingesting cocaine to injecting growth hormones. The World Anti-Doping Agency has taken a number of steps to rid sports of doping to level the playing field for all athletes. A new frontier in doping, however, is beginning to emerge in the form of genetic doping, whereby athletes may alter their genetic makeup to improve performance and speed recovery from injuries. This note discusses various legal implications and concerns of the rising threat of genetic doping to international sports.

The course was directed toward Liberal Arts or non-CS students with the main goal of exposing these students to fundamental concepts of computer science using a highly abstract language called Python. The course was structured similar to that of the CS 1315 Introduction to Media Computation course offered at Georgia Institute of Technology, designed by Associate Professor, Mark Guzdial.

I Changed My Mind, Jodi Curtis, Adam Saito Jan 2007

I Changed My Mind, Jodi Curtis, Adam Saito

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Some might say that college is a time for people to find out what they want to do with the rest of their lives. Students select fields based on their interest, to study and further turn into a career. Some students become unsatisfied with their choice, or even find interest in another field. This leads to students making the decision to change their major and pursue another major. In this paper, it is hypothesized that due to exposure to different, required, general education classes of different fields, students change their majors. Data was collected from students enrolled in capstone classes, …

Lumen: A Case Study In Domestic Violence, Daisy R. Palompon, Fleoy T. Ysmael, Marylou B. Ong, Emilia N. Bustamante, Ivy Carmela Dacumos

CNU Journal of Higher Education

A case study was done on "Lumen," a wife who is a victim of domestic violence with the husband as the perpetrator. Utilizing narrative analysis, the findings, as supported by the propositions of sociological functionalist and feminist theories, revealed that "Lumen" had basically a low self-esteem which later became even lower due to the abuses; her family followed a patriarchal system in which the husband dominates in decision-making and control of the family. She demonstrated an adaptation to the abusive condition as an effect to the repeated abuses, and displayed a distorted decision-making ability. The inclusion of her children in …

This project focused on immigrants' perceptions of social services and social workers. The study employed the post positivist paradigm. The project was conducted with legal and illegal immigrants who received services at Bilingual Family Counseling Service in the city of Ontario, CA. The study found that the immigrants' perceptions about social service agencies and social workers were multi-determined by at least three elements: knowledge, experiences, and attitudes. The dynamic interaction between experiences and attitudes shaped the immigrants' perceptions. Most of the respondents had a positive attitude toward social workers and social services agencies.

The Effect Of Social Capital On Group Loan Repayment: Evidence From Field Experiments, Alessandra Cassar, Luke Crowley, Bruce Wydick Jan 2007

The Effect Of Social Capital On Group Loan Repayment: Evidence From Field Experiments, Alessandra Cassar, Luke Crowley, Bruce Wydick

Economics Faculty Publications

An important question to microfinance is the relevance of existing social capital in target communities to the performance of group lending. This research presents evidence from field experiments in South Africa and Armenia, in which subjects participate in trust and microfinance games. We present evidence that personal trust between group members and peer homogeneity are more important to group loan repayment than general societal trust or acquaintanceship between members. We also find some evidence of reciprocity: those who have been helped by other group members in the past are more likely to contribute in the future.

Grandma Was Right: Why Cohabitation Undermines Relational Happiness, But Is Increasing Anyway, Bruce Wydick Jan 2007

Grandma Was Right: Why Cohabitation Undermines Relational Happiness, But Is Increasing Anyway, Bruce Wydick

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper uses a game theoretic model to explain empirical research which has revealed higher relational satisfaction among married couples than cohabiting couples, as well as among married couples who did not cohabit before marriage. Despite these findings, in recent decades cohabitation rates have dramatically increased in both Europe and the United States. Instrumental variables estimations on data from 28 industrialized countries and 50 U.S. states show cohabitation strongly correlated with increases in women’s labor force participation, where a 10 percent increase in women’s labor force participation results in a 6.4 to 14.6 percent increase in cohabitation.
