An Internal Connection Between Logic And Rhetoric, And A Legitimate Foundation For Knowledge, Jeremy Barris Jan 2007

An Internal Connection Between Logic And Rhetoric, And A Legitimate Foundation For Knowledge, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

It has often been argued that a theory that tries to justify itself fully is either viciously circular or produces an infinite regress of justifications. Thinking that tries to establish ultimate foundations for itself seems in the end to base itself on nothing but its own insistence that it is right. As a result it offers no real knowledge. As Robert Almeder notes, for example, a strong appeal attaches to arguments such as that "there is no non-question-begging way to answer questions such as 'Are you justified in believing your definition of justification?'"

Nao Valel A Pena (Not Worth The Trouble?) Afro-Brazilian Workers And Brazilian Anti-Discrimination Law, Benjamin Hensler Jan 2007

Nao Valel A Pena (Not Worth The Trouble?) Afro-Brazilian Workers And Brazilian Anti-Discrimination Law, Benjamin Hensler

UC Law SF International Law Review

In this paper Benjamin Hensler examines the paradoxical underdevelopment of Brazilian antidiscrimination law and its impact on the country's Afro-Brazilian population - a group that includes more than 40% of Brazil's citizens, and the vast majority of its poor. The author considers why, despite the presence of both widespread racial discrimination in the country's private labor market and explicit prohibitions on employment discrimination in its constitution, there has been - until quite recently - a glaring absence of successful legal challenges to racial discrimination by Afro-Brazilian workers. His paper discusses the interwoven relationships among three key factors that have inhibited …

Understanding Virtuality: Contributions From Goffman’S "Frame Analysis", Joann Brooks Jan 2007

Understanding Virtuality: Contributions From Goffman’S "Frame Analysis", Joann Brooks

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Virtual interactions are normally assumed to be separate and distinct from the “real world,” yet they are also situated within material reality. In this paper I propose that a situated approach to understanding virtuality can be developed through drawing from Goffman’s Frame Analysis (1974/1986). I explain how Goffman’s terminology and concepts afford a way of integrating the study of virtual interaction with the study of social interaction more generally. His frame analysis approach offers constructs useful for distinguishing virtual worlds from each other and from real worlds in a way that is consonant with perspectives on human-computer interaction. His language …

Exploring Learning Styles To Teach Reading, Caroline Earp Jan 2007

Exploring Learning Styles To Teach Reading, Caroline Earp

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Reading education needs to be taught using many different learning styles. Students that have learning styles different then those normally used in their classrooms are being undereducated. Teachers need to understand how learning styles work and how to use them in their classroom. In my work in classrooms, I found that teachers think that using learning styles is important but they are sometimes unsure as to how to use them. To assist teachers, I made a pamphlet on learning styles. In the pamphlet there is a list of different learning styles and a brief summary of how each group learns …

What Primary Grade Teachers Need To Know About Speech And Language, Evanthia Argyriou Jan 2007

What Primary Grade Teachers Need To Know About Speech And Language, Evanthia Argyriou

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The primary purpose of my action research and thesis is to write a guide for the teachers of very young children (Grades preK-2) to help them identify the children in their classrooms who may have speech and language disorders, and therefore refer them for assistance in a timely manner. There are several studies supporting the idea that difficulty in speech and language affects the development of literacy skills, and I believe all teachers need to be informed of the problem. I therefore decided to write a guide for the teachers of preschool, kindergarten, and 1st and 2nd grade children including …

The Negative Effect Of Prozac On Teenagers In The United States, Jennifer Vares Jan 2007

The Negative Effect Of Prozac On Teenagers In The United States, Jennifer Vares

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

What are the Negative Effect of Prozac on teens in the United States? Prozac, one of the most studied drugs in the world today, is becoming a serious death threat to many adolescents in the United States. Death rates are increasing from suicide brought on by the drug, more depression, more anxiety and more wonders of why the drug is becoming so harmful. Doctors are prone to handing out the drug not knowing what the side effects could be by not taking time to look at all the information. If the media is even promoting the drug as a harmful …

The Meaning Of Folklore, Simon J. Bronner Jan 2007

The Meaning Of Folklore, Simon J. Bronner

All USU Press Publications

The essays of Alan Dundes virtually created the meaning of folklore as an American academic discipline. Yet many of them went quickly out of print after their initial publication in far-flung journals. Brought together for the first time in this volume compiled and edited by Simon Bronner, the selection surveys Dundes's major ideas and emphases, and is introduced by Bronner with a thorough analysis of Dundes's long career, his interpretations, and his inestimable contribution to folklore studies.

Providers’ Perspectives On Troublesome Overusers Of Medical Services, Richard Bischoff, Cody S. Hollist, Joellen Patterson, Lee Williams, Layne Prest, Matthew D. Barkdull Jan 2007

Providers’ Perspectives On Troublesome Overusers Of Medical Services, Richard Bischoff, Cody S. Hollist, Joellen Patterson, Lee Williams, Layne Prest, Matthew D. Barkdull

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to better understand providers’ perspectives of and experiences with frequent users of medical services. Focus group interviews were con¬ducted with physicians in San Diego, California, and Omaha, Nebraska. Indicators of problematic patient overuse of medical services were identified as well as the common physician experience of overuse that is troublesome and problematic. Qualitative data analysis revealed that physicians did not consider patient overuse, by itself, to be problematic. Overuse became problematic and troublesome when patient behavior violated the physician-patient relationship of trust. All participants described a distinct negative physiological reaction to these patients.

Does 'Free-Sampling' Enhance The Value Of Public Goods?, Arthur J. Caplan, Douglas Jackson-Smith, Sandra Marquart-Pyatt Jan 2007

Does 'Free-Sampling' Enhance The Value Of Public Goods?, Arthur J. Caplan, Douglas Jackson-Smith, Sandra Marquart-Pyatt

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This study investigates whether a 'free sampling' marketing strategy induces an enduring WTP premium effect for public goods. Using data from a unique field experiment involving curbside recycling, we find that the premium effect associated with providing non-participating households a brief opportunity to participate in a curbside recycling program for free is relatively small and not enduring. It may therefore not be cost effective to offer a free-sampling participation incentive for this type (or similar types) of local public good(s).

The Tale Of Iranian Entrepreneurs In The United States, Keramat Poorsoltan Jan 2007

The Tale Of Iranian Entrepreneurs In The United States, Keramat Poorsoltan

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

In practice and in theory, as the findings of this research reveal, the Iranian business community is a new and different, nonconforming immigrant group in the United States. This study explores certain aspects of the Iranian business community in light of a survey done by the author. The article compares and contrasts findings of the survey with those of existing literature that has been written about the business communities of various ethnic groups. The results of this study disagree with the literature in most areas. One difference is that the Iranian business community in the United States does not fit into …

Mothers And Non-Mothers: Gendering The Discourse Of Education In South Asia, Nita Kumar Jan 2007

Mothers And Non-Mothers: Gendering The Discourse Of Education In South Asia, Nita Kumar

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This essay brings together and complicates three stories within South Asian education history by gendering them. Thus modern education was actively pursued by mothers for their sons; indigenous education should be understood as continuing at home; and women were crucial actors in men's reform and nationalism efforts through both collaboration and resistance. Gendered history should go beyond the separate story of girls and women, or the understanding of women as mothers and mothers as the nation, to see these three processes as gendered. The essay argues for the coming together of historical and anthropological arguments and for using literature imaginatively.

Organizations As Place Builders, David F. Thomas, Jennifer E. Cross Jan 2007

Organizations As Place Builders, David F. Thomas, Jennifer E. Cross

Management Faculty Publications

We argue that the role of organizations as agents in the construction of place has been overlooked in the management and organizations literature. Using concepts from sociology, cultural geography, and management, we develop a typology that illustrates how organizations contribute to the social construction of place. This typology presents an analytic scheme for examining the place-building characteristics of organizations and a basis for developing theories on the interdependence between places and organizations.

The American Right-Wing Policy Agenda, Timothy Stoltzfus Jost Jan 2007

The American Right-Wing Policy Agenda, Timothy Stoltzfus Jost

Scholarly Articles

Right-wing health policy is alive and well in the United States. Pro-business and libertarian health policy advocacy groups, generously funded by right-wing foundations (and, in some instances, by the health care industry), produce a continuous stream of press releases, policy-statements, books, articles, and symposia, as well as testimony before legislative and administrative bodies. Their positions are taken very seriously by the American media, who make certain that right-wing policy experts are represented in any discussion of current health policy issues.
