Body Use And Reference Group Impact: With Whom Do We Compare Our Bodies?, Stephen L. Franzoi, Jeff Klaiber Feb 2007

Body Use And Reference Group Impact: With Whom Do We Compare Our Bodies?, Stephen L. Franzoi, Jeff Klaiber

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Fifty U.S. Olympic speedskating team members, 50 professional models, and 80 college students completed the Body Esteem Scale (BES: Franzoi & Shields, 1984) and indicated for each of the 35 BES items whether when evaluating themselves they most frequently use as a comparison standard same-sex people in general, same-sex professional models, or elite same-sex athletes. Consistent with social comparison theory that people seek similar others as comparison targets, college students were more likely than Olympic athletes or professional models to compare themselves to people in the general population, athletes were more likely than students or models to compare themselves …

Comment On Reinterpreting The Pollen Data From Dos Cabezas, Karl J. Reinhard, Vaughn M. Bryant, Sheila Dorsey Vinton Feb 2007

Comment On Reinterpreting The Pollen Data From Dos Cabezas, Karl J. Reinhard, Vaughn M. Bryant, Sheila Dorsey Vinton

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The published pollen analysis of the Dos Cabezas giants, Geyer et al. ([2003]), lists a variety of purported dietary pollen types. The paper also hypothesizes that the giants were poisoned with plant toxins. We have severe reservations about the pollen evidence of diet and poisoning. We suggest that the analysts made several errors in their interpretation. Firstly, some of the discovered pollen types are not prehistoric endemics to the Dos Cabezas region of coastal Peru. These include the pollen of fava beans (cultivated in the Old World), and specified species of agave and sage. We believe that some or all …

Terrorism And Relative Justice, Mark Findlay Feb 2007

Terrorism And Relative Justice, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Terrorist violence and violent justice responses have much in common. While contextually dependant, both forms of violence lay claim to contested legitimacies. The relationships between terrorism and justice responses require both theoretical and empirical examination if the prospects for controlling the violence they perpetrate is to be sharpened.

Feminism And The Politics Of Representation: Towards A Critical And Ethical Encounter With “Others”, Amy Hinterberger Feb 2007

Feminism And The Politics Of Representation: Towards A Critical And Ethical Encounter With “Others”, Amy Hinterberger

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay begins from the position that a speaking subject in feminism occupies a place of power and authority which requires a commitment to an ethical involvement in the representation of ‘others.’ Specifically, this essay will address feminist concerns of speaking for others and the concerns raised by the dangers of representing across differences of race, sexuality, gender and cultures. First, it will critique feminist claims to political effectivity as a solution to ethical representation. Second, it will look at how hierarchies of oppression and privileged ontological positions are inconsistently represented in feminist discussions. Lastly, it will briefly examine how …

Psychological Distress By Type Of Fertility Barrier, Mary Casey Jacob, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil Jan 2007

Psychological Distress By Type Of Fertility Barrier, Mary Casey Jacob, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: We examined fertility-specific distress (FSD) and general distress by type of fertility barrier (FB).

METHODS: In a random sample telephone survey, 580 US women reported their fertility intentions and histories. Six groups of women were identified: (i) no FBs, (ii) infertile with intent, (iii) infertile without intent, (iv) other fertility problems, (v) miscarriages and (vi) situational barriers. Multiple regression analyses were used to compare groups with FBs.
RESULTS: Sixty-one percent reported FBs and 28% reported an inability to conceive for at least 12 months. The infertile with intent group had the highest FSD, which was largely explained by (a) …

Bereavement is the process of suffering that follows the loss of a living being that is significant to someone. When one suffers, she or he has to endure an unpleasant experience, in the case of bereavement, the loss of something special to the person. This loss most often is a loved one but could also include the loss of a pet, relationship, or physical or mental capability. This state of suffering is called grief. In describing his grief, C. S. Facing The Demons Of The Past: Transitional Justice In Gujarat, Ameya Kilara Jan 2007

Facing The Demons Of The Past: Transitional Justice In Gujarat, Ameya Kilara

Socio-Legal Review

Scholars of transitional justice have recently suggested that our understanding of transitions need not be restricted to societies moving from authoritarian regimes to democracy. In fact, “non-paradigm transitions” occur in purportedly democratic states as well, in the aftermath of large-scale and State-sanctioned violations of human rights. This article focuses on one such non-paradigm transition occurring in the state of Gujarat in India post the 2002 communal carnage. The author proposes that in addition to retributive responses to the human rights violations, a Truth and Reconciliation Commission should be seriously considered as a means of effecting a real transition to peace …

"Prisoner Never Gave Me Anything For What He Had Done:" Aboriginal Voices In The Criminal Court, Shelley A.M. Gavigan Jan 2007

"Prisoner Never Gave Me Anything For What He Had Done:" Aboriginal Voices In The Criminal Court, Shelley A.M. Gavigan

Socio-Legal Review

Aboriginal people participated in different ways in the criminal process in the early years of the North-West Territories region of Canada: including, as accused persons, as Informants, and as witnesses. Their physical participation was often mediated by the police, Indian agents and sometimes their Chiefs. Their words were also mediated by interpreters, both linguistic and cultural, and their signatures invariably marked as “X” on their depositions. Scholarship that has examined the relationship of Aboriginal peoples to the criminal law has tended to interrogate the criminalization and moral regulation strategies implicit in the process of colonization and domination of the First …
