The Effect Of Local Life Circumstances On Victimization Of Drug‐Involved Women, Gaylene Armstrong, Marie L. Griffin
The Effect Of Local Life Circumstances On Victimization Of Drug‐Involved Women, Gaylene Armstrong, Marie L. Griffin
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
While numerous studies have examined female victimization in the general population, fewer studies have focused specifically on high‐risk populations such as drug‐involved females. Of the existing literature, the Lifestyle Exposure and/or Routine Activities theory is frequently used to examine the antecedent conditions and correlates of female victimization. This study employs a dynamic modeling approach to examine the effect of short‐term change (i.e., monthly) in local life circumstances on female victimization within a criminogenic population. Results demonstrated that risk of victimization increased in months a woman was in a relationship, lived with a significant other and/or her children, engaged in criminogenic …

Time To Step Up: Modeling The African American Ethnivestor For Self Help Entrepreneurship In Urban America, Roger M. Groves
ExpressO
Almost $6 billion in taxes paid by the American people have been rather ubiquitously placed in the hands of a federal subsidy program for investors in low income communities. The subsidy is in the form of a tax credit. The program is entitled the New Markets Tax Credit (“NMTC”) initiative. Under the program, the tax credit is used to lure investors to provide equity capital into low income areas, urban and/or rural (i.e. a new market for equity funding). According to my companion law review article (Florida Tax Review, Spring, 2007; The Florida Tax Review was ranked 1st among tax …

The Changing Faces Of New England: Increasing Spatial And Racial Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson
The Changing Faces Of New England: Increasing Spatial And Racial Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
New England is growing more slowly than the rest of the nation. The region is becoming more racially diverse, and demographic trends contrast sharply between northern and southern New England and metropolitan and rural areas. New England's population stood at 14,270,000 in July 2006, marking a gain of just 2.5 percent since 2000, less than half the rate.
Effects Of Individual And Contextual Characteristics On Preadjudication Detention Of Juvenile Delinquents, Gaylene Armstrong, Nancy Rodriguez
Effects Of Individual And Contextual Characteristics On Preadjudication Detention Of Juvenile Delinquents, Gaylene Armstrong, Nancy Rodriguez
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This study examined individual and contextual factors affecting preadjudication detention of juvenile delinquents in 65 counties of a northeastern state. Results demonstrated that while individual characteristics of the juvenile delinquents were important predictors, much of the variation in decisions was explained when contextual factors of the counties were included in a two‐level hierarchical linear model. In addition to the statistically significant legal and extralegal juvenile characteristics, our study found that counties with a higher percentage of non‐White population were more likely to detain juvenile delinquents prior to adjudication. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering both individual and contextual factors …

The Tragic Consequences Of Societal And Cultural Memory: William Shakespeare And Arthur Miller, Leslie A. Werden
The Tragic Consequences Of Societal And Cultural Memory: William Shakespeare And Arthur Miller, Leslie A. Werden
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that tragedy occurs not to a great man or a common man, but to the family left behind to confront the societal and cultural implications of the manipulated memories they have inherited. Using Chris Hedge's book War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning, I investigate how storytelling and legacy are passed along to family members who have been affected by war. Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus and Miller's All My Sons suddenly seem very similar: both plays have fathers who lost sons, which is tragic in itself. The deeper psychological tragedy occurs, however, as the fathers, in order …
