A Jury Between Fact And Norm, Robert P. Burns Apr 2007

A Jury Between Fact And Norm, Robert P. Burns

Chicago-Kent Law Review

With a great cast, 12 Angry Men remains perhaps the most compelling portrayal of an American jury in action. I begin by noting eight details in the film which are so obvious that their significance may be difficult to discern. I then discuss the significance of the film being a drama, indeed, a drama about a drama. I discuss the kind of truth that a dramatic portrayal of the jury can aspire to and what it can add to social scientific accounts. Finally, I identify the six dramatic tensions that define the film's meaning.

Fathers In Law: Violence And Reason In 12 Angry Men, Austin Sarat Apr 2007

Fathers In Law: Violence And Reason In 12 Angry Men, Austin Sarat

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this article I argue that 12 Angry Men is as much a film about fatherhood and law as about juries and civic virtue. It is a powerful presentation of sons subject to paternal brutality, of fathers tormented by their sons, and of the very real possibility of sons murdering their brutal fathers. This film thus deploys complex images of fatherhood as a site and source of violence and anger. By presenting those images it reminds us of law's own complex relationship to reason and violence.

Deliberation In 12 Angry Men, Barbara Allen Babcock, Ticien Marie Sassoubre

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The authors explore the ways 12 Angry Men remains a relevant and teachable portrayal of the mysterious process of jury deliberation. Even though few juries today would look like the jury in the film, its performance reveals the continuing value of the institution.

Review Of From Dominance To Disappearance: The Indians Of Texas And The Near Southwest, 1786-1859 By F. Todd Smith, William Meadows Apr 2007

Review Of From Dominance To Disappearance: The Indians Of Texas And The Near Southwest, 1786-1859 By F. Todd Smith, William Meadows

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

F. Todd Smith's work provides the first detailed history of the Indians of Texas and the Near Southwest, an area encompassing parts of present day Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma over a seventy-four year period.

Foremost, it highlights the competing efforts of the Spanish, French, American, and later Texan governments to control and maintain boundaries in the region, much of which depended on the ability of colonial powers to provide trade goods to tribes, and to supply assistance in the form of protection against then-existing enemy tribes. The Spanish inability consistently to provide trade goods and the growing intercession of …

Honoring Virginia Tech: Letter From Charles (Jack) Dudley, Charles (Jack) Dudley

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Your cards, letters, emails, and phone calls helped sustain us in the most terrible moments of our lives and for that we are forever in your debt. For the period Monday through today (April 16–25th), we have lived through periods of uncertainty, grief, intense emotions, and a profound sense of loss. We lost thirty-three students, our sense of security, and sense of direction. Your concern, as evidenced by more than two hundred communications, provided islands of comfort in a sea of horror. For your thoughtfulness we say a humble thank you.

Evaluation Of The College Experience Among American Indian Upperclassmen, Terry Huffman, Ron Ferguson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This article reports partial findings from a five-year study that examined the attitudes, perceptions, and expectations regarding higher education among a sample of American Indian students attending a predominantly non-Indian university. Population Characteristics And Health Service Use By Latino Immigrants To Southwest Missouri, Suzanne E. Walker, Susan Dollar, Ravilldra G. Amonker Apr 2007

Population Characteristics And Health Service Use By Latino Immigrants To Southwest Missouri, Suzanne E. Walker, Susan Dollar, Ravilldra G. Amonker

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The rapid influx and new demographic patterns of Latino immigrants to the United States have precipitated numerous pressing issues, among them health and healthcare disparities. The relatively recent phenomenon of high Latino immigration rates to rural areas is increasingly common in the Midwest and Great Plains states, where they are drawn by the labor market. A rural setting, low socioeconomic status, and high concentrations of minorities have been shown to be closely intertwined, and such regions are often medically underserved. Such describes rural southwest Missouri, where we collected data in four counties on demographics, socioeconomic factors, healthcare perceptions, and use …

Why Every Chief Judge Should See 12 Angry Men, Judith S. Kaye Apr 2007

Why Every Chief Judge Should See 12 Angry Men, Judith S. Kaye

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this article, the Chief Judge of the State of New York, Judith S. Kaye, writes about several aspects of 12 Angry Men that raise concerns for all of today's chief judges. She connects scenes in the film to the modern challenges of maintaining adequate jury facilities, assuring juror diversity, providing effective legal representation to those who cannot afford counsel, and incorporating twenty-first-century technology. Although much has changed in jury service since 1957, Judge Kaye concludes that the essence of the film has not: the quest for justice is timeless.
