Missionary Schools And The Enlightenment Of The Alaskan Natives: A Theological And Sociological Survey Of Russian Orthodox And Protestant Missionary Efforts Among The Nations Of The Aleutian Islands And Southeastern Alaska, Erik C. Young

Seminary Masters Theses

The goal of this research thesis is to explore the activities of the Protestant and Russian Orthodox missions to Alaska and the ways in which they engaged the Native American peoples. It examines the geographic, religious, sociaL and economic distinctives of the respective missionary ideologies. Although the Orthodox and Protestant missions labored at different time periods and under different conditions, their work overlapped and their efforts were informed by the anthropological and theological traditions from which they derived. As a vehicle for equitable comparison, this thesis briefly unpacks the lives of the Presbyterian minister Edward Marsden, a Tsirnshian Indian educated …

What’S A Girl To Do: Repatriarchalization And Croatian Women’S Reproductive Freedom, Brittany Rast Apr 2007

What’S A Girl To Do: Repatriarchalization And Croatian Women’S Reproductive Freedom, Brittany Rast

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Croatia is a country in transition. After decades of officially minimizing differences between itself and the rest of the former Yugoslavia, Croatia is now fiercely fighting to establish its own unique identity. As part of that battle, Croats have embraced their folk traditions, and they have brought the Catholic Church back into prominence. Approximately 85% of Croatians are Roman Catholic, and the Croatian government and the Catholic Church have very strong ties (Drakulic 1993: 125). As is the case in many transitional countries, the embracing of folk culture and its norms, coupled with the resurgence of the Catholic Church has …

Hate, Hegemony And Hooliganism: The Rise Of Far-Right Nationalism In Great Britain, Ben Sprague Apr 2007

Hate, Hegemony And Hooliganism: The Rise Of Far-Right Nationalism In Great Britain, Ben Sprague

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This thesis seeks to examine the impact of far-Right political parties on the British political system. It cites relevant theories of nationalism and provides a brief historical background to frame the analysis of the present case study. Additionally, the work analyzes the British political system to help explain the inability of extremist parties to win a seat in Parliament. This piece argues that far-Right parties in Great Britain, despite their electoral failures and limited membership, have maintained political legitimacy by recruiting marginalized youth and embracing radical methods. These groups, moreover, could gamer more public support with increases in terrorism, levels …

Pastoral Care, An Effective Front Porch For The Postmodern Church, Mark B. Hale Apr 2007

Pastoral Care, An Effective Front Porch For The Postmodern Church, Mark B. Hale

Doctor of Ministry

For over 18 years, Disney has offered over a million alumni the opportunity to benchmark the philosophies of the Walt Disney World resort. Since I am implementing the metaphor of the front porch as an integral part of the overall care model of the church, I ask, who better implements a welcoming, front porch atmosphere than Disney? Where Disney has elevated the mouse as its icon of celebrating and welcoming, I propose that Jesus is the icon for the front porch.

Rex Miller in The Millenium Matrix reminds us, "That original thinking will certainly include experimenting with past mediums of …

Cubans: Anomaly Or Pioneers? An Analysis Of Their Assimilation And Political Incorporation Into The American Political Mainstream And The Measurement Of Their Political Influence In The United States, Lara Bueso Apr 2007

Cubans: Anomaly Or Pioneers? An Analysis Of Their Assimilation And Political Incorporation Into The American Political Mainstream And The Measurement Of Their Political Influence In The United States, Lara Bueso

Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal

My thesis studies how Cuban American immigrants achieved political influence in the United States and whether other Hispanic immigrant groups can attain similar successes. The study found a correlation between assimilation and political incorporation. I evaluated Cuban American assimilation via three proxy variables: education, language spoken in the home, and intermarriage. I concluded that Cuban Americans are an anomaly among Hispanic immigrants. The underlying reason is the way in which they were treated by the United States government, and how much government support they received. This observation was followed by a comparison with Mexican Americans who were not granted government …

The Question Of Animal Selves: Implications For Sociological Knowledge And Practice, Leslie Irvine Apr 2007

The Question Of Animal Selves: Implications For Sociological Knowledge And Practice, Leslie Irvine

Anthropomorphism and Anthropocentrism Collection

The question of whether sociologists should investigate the subjective experience of non-human others arises regularly in discussions of research on animals. Recent criticism of this research agenda as speculative and therefore unproductive is examined and found wanting. Ample evidence indicates that animals have the capacity to see themselves as objects, which meets sociological criteria for selfhood. Resistance to this possibility highlights the discipline’s entrenched anthropocentrism rather than lack of evidence. Sociological study of the moral status of animals, based on the presence of the self, is warranted because our treatment of animals is connected with numerous “mainstream” sociological issues. As …

Being In Another World: Transcultural Student Experiences Using Service Learning With Families Who Are Homeless, Roberta J. Hunt, Paula Swiggum Apr 2007

Being In Another World: Transcultural Student Experiences Using Service Learning With Families Who Are Homeless, Roberta J. Hunt, Paula Swiggum

Special Topics, General

Developing skills in cultural competence is a recognized theoretical strategy in schools of nursing. Nursing faculty know that students need to be sensitized to the concept of diversity; however, many are struggling with the best way to teach cultural competence. This article describes transcultural experiences from service learning clinical rotations at a family homeless shelter, described by students as being in another world. Student narratives provide valuable information about structuring clinical learning activities to promote understanding of cultural differences and similarities. Clinical experiences using a traditional model versus those using service learning, the role of reflection, and teaching strategies promoting …
