Design Effects In The Transition To Web-Based Surveys, Don A. Dillman, Jolene D. Smyth
Design Effects In The Transition To Web-Based Surveys, Don A. Dillman, Jolene D. Smyth
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Innovation within survey modes should always be mitigated by concerns about survey quality and in particular sampling, coverage, nonresponse, and measurement error. This is as true today with the development of web surveying as it was in the 1970s when telephone surveying was being developed. This paper focuses on measurement error in web surveys. Although Internet technology provides significant opportunities for innovation in survey design, systematic research has yet to be conducted on how most of the possible innovations might affect measurement error, leaving many survey designers “out in the cold.” This paper summarizes recent research to provide an overview …
New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson
New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The use of educational technology has become a focus of reform efforts designed to enrich student learning. Proponents of technology view it as the panacea of education while others ask us to question this myth-information. Throughout America, school districts are designating millions of dollars for technology. Nevertheless, while there are schools with desirable infrastructures, too many schools are ill equipped for enhancing learning through technology. In addition, many classrooms house computers used to merely advance traditional teaching modes, e.g., drill and practice, rather than teach the importance of social responsibility for humankind and the environment through our use of technology. …
Hope Measurement In Mexican American Youth, Lisa M. Edwards, Anthony D. Ong, Shane J. Lopez
Hope Measurement In Mexican American Youth, Lisa M. Edwards, Anthony D. Ong, Shane J. Lopez
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Hope is a motivational construct that has been associated with many positive outcomes in children, adolescents, and adults. Although research with the Children’s Hope Scale (CHS) has demonstrated support for the reliability and validity of the CHS with various samples of youth, there is little empirical evidence for its use with Latino youth. The current study examined the psychometric properties of the six-item CHS in a sample of 135 Mexican American youth. Confirmatory factor analyses provided support for a hierarchical representation of the CHS with two underlying factors (pathways and agency). CHS scores were found to be positively correlated with …
Efficacy Of A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment For Weight Loss In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Kathy Wickersham
Efficacy Of A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment For Weight Loss In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Kathy Wickersham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing across all sociodemographic groups. Obesity and overweight are major risk factors in the development of the disease and in the development of complications. Conversely, weight loss improves glycemic control, which reduces likelihood of complications. Interventions combining cognitive and behavioral components show promise in addressing the problem of weight loss maintenance. The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral intervention. Participants were 54 adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes randomly assigned to either a treatment group or a control. The assessment measures utilized in this study were the …

The Framework For Early Learning: A Background Paper:Children's Early Learning And Development Executive Summary, Geraldine French
Reports
This is the Executive Summary of the background paper Children’s early learning and development, sets out the theory and research underpinning children’s early learning and development in the Framework for Early Learning. The paper essentially responds to the question - how should we envision and understand the child as a young learner? The paper begins by outlining the context for early childhood care and education in Ireland by referring to our economic and social climate, the increasingly multicultural nature of society and relevant legislation and policy. Drawing on centuries of research, the modern day view of the child is one …

Homeless At Home: The Communication Effects Of The 'One Homeless Night' Program On Participants’ Attitudes And Perceptions Of Homelessness In Canada, Sarah Grace Neff
Masters Theses
Experiential learning provides an opportunity for participants to engage with their respective subject matter in an interactive, effective way. One Homeless Night, an experiential learning event, communicates the nature, causes, and complexity of homelessness through a street walk, facilitated orientation, interactions with the homeless, a service learning component, and finally, an overnight experience at an organization that works with the homeless. This study endeavored to ascertain the extent to which One Homeless Night is effective in the communication of the true nature of homelessness to participants. Key findings of One Homeless Night included increased understanding of the complexity of homelessness, …

Toward An Understanding Of Serial Killers Through Their Artwork: Implications For Forensic Art Therapy, Kelly Macionis
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
This research study explored the formal elements and content of 258 images of artwork created by 47 serial killers to see if common themes or content could be discovered. The images were found on five Internet websites containing serial killer artwork. The 47 serial killer artists were all male and it was assumed they were imprisoned when they created their art. The artwork gathered was viewed on a laptop and analyzed using the methods of content analysis. After categories of content and formal elements in the images were entered into a spreadsheet, frequencies and percentages of each category and subcategory …

Leadership And The Politics Of Religious Conflict In Northern Nigeria, Clement Kagoma
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Northern Nigeria has become a boiling point lately where Christians and Muslims kill each other in the name of God. Within the last four years, over 10,000 people had lost their lives. This research seeks to investigate the relationship between political leadership and the causes of religious conflict in Northern Nigeria. Using the survey method 150 questionnaires were sent to different parts of northern Nigeria and 40 to Nigerians living in the United States. 117 questionnaires were analyzed at the end with 99 coming from Nigeria. The results revealed that there is a significant relationship between political leadership and religious …
Secrets And Hiding Places: The Worth Of Women In Nicholas Nickleby, Elizabeth Redmond
Secrets And Hiding Places: The Worth Of Women In Nicholas Nickleby, Elizabeth Redmond
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
In early Victorian England, married women were denied the legal right to own property, and social convention remanded them to ostracism if they chose to remain single. Likewise, jobs that were available to women failed to pay a living wage, so women were placed under tremendous economic and social pressure to marry. In Charles Dickens' novel, Nicholas Nickleby, he depicts how marriage becomes manipulated within the working and middle classes as a means to acquire wealth. Dickens also compares the repression of women to the abuse suffered by school children in the Yorkshire schools, which had a reputation for neglecting …
The Admission Of Legacy Blacks, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
The Admission Of Legacy Blacks, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
Vanderbilt Law Review
Three years ago, the New York Times reported the results of a study that revealed that two-thirds of the black population at Harvard College consisted of first-generation black immigrant students in the United States, second-generation black American students, and mixed-race students with one black parent. Additional studies have confirmed that the same phenomenon exists at other elite institutions, which include schools such as Columbia, Duke, Georgetown, Northwestern, Oberlin, the University of California- Berkeley, the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the University of Pennsylvania, Smith, Stanford, and Yale.
For many of those interested in how affirmative action …
Analysis Of Procrastination And Flow Experiences, Bryan Leighton Dawson
Analysis Of Procrastination And Flow Experiences, Bryan Leighton Dawson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Flow is a subjective state that occurs when an individual is completely engaged in a particular activity (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975). This state encompasses arousal and intense interest in a task. Procrastination is the tendency of the individual who is in control of some activity to postpone or avoid that activity. Some researchers have suggested that perhaps there is more than one kind of procrastinator (Chu & Choi, 2005). The current study explored the differences between procrastination types and how these types relate to flow experiences. Participants were 60 upper-level Psychology students, working on a class term paper who completed weekly diaries …

Understanding The Multicultural Experience Of Lep Adolescents, Sharlene Snead Monahan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This inquiry is a qualitative study of the multicultural experience of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students who are learning a second language in an inner-city high school in southeastern Georgia. The LEP students are enrolled or have been enrolled in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. Using three strands of inquiry, critical phenomenological, narrative, and anthropological, I addressed three major issues. One, I examined the struggle of LEP students to learn English at a proficiency level to pass the state-mandated test for graduation and receive a high-school diploma. Not only must the LEP students learn a new …
Causal Effect Of Corporal Punishment On Children's Internalizing And Externalizing Behavioral Outcomes: Results From A Propensity Score Matching Analysis, Sara Zane Morris
Causal Effect Of Corporal Punishment On Children's Internalizing And Externalizing Behavioral Outcomes: Results From A Propensity Score Matching Analysis, Sara Zane Morris
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Substantial research supports the association between corporal punishment and children's behavioral problems, suggesting that punishment leads to both internalizing and externalizing behaviors. However, this research has not been able to discern the direction of causality in this relationship for many reasons, including a lack of experimental data. The purpose of this study is to assess the causal effect of corporal punishment on internalizing and externalizing behaviors by using a Propensity Score Matching (PSM) analysis. This study uses data from waves 1 and 2 of the longitudinal cohort study of the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN), including 6, …

Mandala As A Measure Of Change With Adult Residents Of A Homeless Shelter, Mary W. Cochran
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Homelessness in the United States is a problem that continues to be addressed at the local, state, and federal levels. Diverse solutions to the problem of homelessness include emergency shelters, transitional shelters, and long-term housing. Shelters for families have become a common shelter type, offering diverse programs and types of services. Art therapy with the homeless has concentrated on the aspect of building self-efficacy through the creative process, however, there is limited research concerning the use of art products as a measure of change for the homeless. This study explores the use of mandala drawings to assess changes occurring in …

The Concept Of Peace : Tracing Its Development Through Three Historical Periods In The West Using Artistic And Literacy Evidence., Allan Berry Mcguffey 1952-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to suggest that peace is an idea that changes throughout the history of the west, rather than to show how nations may achieve peace or to define what it is. It begins as a concept the power brokers refer to or represent in their own terms. In Rome the concept of peace expressed the emperor's ability to end civil war. In Siena, the concept substantiated the Nine's claim that communal prosperity and absence of regional wars had happened during their rule. By the Westphalia period the power brokers began to realize the populace was …

What To Make Of Race? : A Content Analysis Of The Use Of Race In Health Research., Oliver Eugene Rollins Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using content analysis, this study examines the use of race in health related journal articles from 2000 to 2005. Each of the articles pertained to African Americans and either access to health or quality of health. Selected articles for review were examined in order to gain an understanding as to how race was measured and if race was conceptualized, the explanation for racial disparities, and the intersection of race and class in health.
Akerlof And Kranton On Identity In Economics: Inverting The Analysis, John B. Davis
Akerlof And Kranton On Identity In Economics: Inverting The Analysis, John B. Davis
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The concept of identity was introduced into the neoclassical utility maximising framework by Akerlof and Kranton in an analysis which draws directly from social psychology's social identity approach and self-categorisation theory. This paper examines their analysis, and compares the social identity approach and an alternative social psychology identity framework called the sociological approach to identity. Using this comparison, the paper argues that their treating identity as an argument in the utility function leaves unaddressed how individuals' different social identities are related. The paper suggests a framework for addressing this issue by embedding their utility function in a personal identity objective …

Experiences Of Women War-Torture Survivors In Uganda: Implications For Health And Human Rights, Helen Liebling-Kalifani, Angela Marshall, Ruth Ojiambo-Ochieng, Nassozi Margaret Kakembo
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper will describe the resulting long-term health needs of women war-torture survivors of the civil war years in Luwero District, Uganda. To do this sections of case studies from interviews carried out in Kikamulo Sub-County, Luwero, are utilised. The effects of gender-based violence and torture and its long term, severe and enduring impact on women’s health will be highlighted. In 1994, the Centre for Health and Human rights at Harvard University led the first international conference on health and human rights. This recognised that human rights are an essential pre-condition for physical and mental health. Women’s resulting health needs …
The Task Of Being Content: Expatriate Wives In Beijing, Emotional Work And Patriarchal Bargain, Daniella Arieli
The Task Of Being Content: Expatriate Wives In Beijing, Emotional Work And Patriarchal Bargain, Daniella Arieli
Journal of International Women's Studies
Based upon an ethnographic study of western expatriate (expat) wives in Beijing, this paper describes these women’s ‘patriarchal bargain’ and the emotional labor it involves. Relocation entails pressures to support the husbands’ careers in various ways, interruption of their working and social life, and increased economic and social dependency. At the same time, however, it also allows them to enjoy leisure and prestige, and to conduct a privileged life style. This bargain demands an emotional labor on the women’s part: an ongoing effort to feel good with their life in Beijing. The study focuses on the strategies the women use …

Integration, Clarification, Substantiation: Sex, Gender, Ethnicity And Migration As Social Determinants Of Women’S Health, Bilkis Vissandjee, Ilene Hyman, Denise L. Spitzer, Alisha Apale, Nahar Kamrun
Journal of International Women's Studies
The aim of this paper was to examine, via a scoping review, how the literature focusing on immigrant women’s health, based on selected criteria, has been able to capture not only sex and gender differences but also the other socially grounded determinants of health. Using selected health databases as well as a diversity of keywords, a final sample of 59 was obtained after a number of steps to increase validity and credibility of the process were taken. Since “women” was one of the main keywords, all of the studies included women either by themselves (n=20/59) or along with men (n=39/59). …
Family Law Reform And The Feminist Debate: Actually-Existing Islamic Feminism In The Maghreb And Malaysia, Brad Archer
Family Law Reform And The Feminist Debate: Actually-Existing Islamic Feminism In The Maghreb And Malaysia, Brad Archer
Journal of International Women's Studies
For an increasing number of Muslim women and women’s rights activists, the stark disparity between the principles of justice and equality guaranteed by international and domestic legal norms on the one hand, and the oppressive environment of their homes that is legitimated by repressive family laws on the other, has acted as the catalyst for a unified call for reform. In the Maghreb, an influential Islamic feminist movement has successfully lobbied for family law reform, and this movement’s positivist framework has recently been adopted as the model for Malaysia’s increasingly vociferous demands for gender equality. Although secular feminists in the …

The Joyous Yoni: An Exploration Of Yogic Perspectives Toward Sexual Empowerment For Women, F. M. Shroff
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper explores yogic approaches to women’s sexuality. Acknowledging that sexualized violence against women is a harsh and pernicious reality for women all over the world, the paper adopts an inclusive perspective on women’s sexuality that focuses on pleasure. A basic introduction to yoga prefaces a discussion of prana (life force) and concepts of unity and oneness. These concepts provide a framework for yogic concepts of the body, with an emphasis on sexuality. Specific breathing exercises, meditations, poses, locks and seals are mentioned. The experience of one of Canada’s most accomplished yoga teachers is also depicted. The paper concludes by …
