The Quest For Help, Sarah Abdel-Wahab Jun 2007

The Quest For Help, Sarah Abdel-Wahab

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The main argument of this exploratory study stems from the claim that individuals with impairments of any kind either mental or physical "are disabled by a society that excludes, disadvantages and discriminates against them" (UPIAS,1976). Abberely (1987) argues that the experiences of disabled people are specific to culture, and changes with time. From this perspective disability should not be seen as being naturally found in individuals, but as being defined and shaped by social, cultural and political conditions.

Riau Vegetables For Singapore Consumers: A Collaborative Knowledge-Transfer Project Across The Straits Of Malacca, Thomas Menkhoff, Patrick H. M. Loh, Sin Bin Chua, Hans-Dieter Evers Jun 2007

Riau Vegetables For Singapore Consumers: A Collaborative Knowledge-Transfer Project Across The Straits Of Malacca, Thomas Menkhoff, Patrick H. M. Loh, Sin Bin Chua, Hans-Dieter Evers

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The paper analyses a recent collaborative knowledge transfer project between the Republic of Singapore and the Republic of Indonesia across the Straits of Malacca. The initiative was aimed at supplying the city state at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula with green vegetables from Riau, Indonesia, and to provide technical assistance to Riau farmers on protected cultivation and post-harvest technologies. We reconstruct the bilateral evolution of the vegetable project in the context of the long-standing relationships between both countries vis-à-vis Singapore’s reliance on food imports; identify the strategic partner organizations on both sides and their motivations to engage in …

Effect Of Interviewer Experience On Interview Pace And Interviewer Attitudes, Kristen M. Olson, Andy Peytchev Jun 2007

Effect Of Interviewer Experience On Interview Pace And Interviewer Attitudes, Kristen M. Olson, Andy Peytchev

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Traditional statistical analyses of interviewer effects on survey data do not examine whether these effects change over a field period. However, the nature of the survey interview is dynamic. Interviewers’ behaviors and perceptions may evolve as they gain experience, thus potentially affecting data quality. This paper looks at how interview length and interviewer evaluations of respondents change over interviewers’ workloads. Multilevel models with random interviewer effects are used to account for the clustering of cases within interviewers and individual interviewer characteristics in the 1984, 1988, and 2000 National Election Studies. The 1984 and 1988 NES released sample in four replicates, …

Who Shall Lead? An Integrative Personality Approach To The Study Of The Antecedents Of Status In Informal Social Organizations, Peter D. Harms, Brent W. Roberts, Dustin Wood Jun 2007

Who Shall Lead? An Integrative Personality Approach To The Study Of The Antecedents Of Status In Informal Social Organizations, Peter D. Harms, Brent W. Roberts, Dustin Wood

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The effects of personality traits, motives, and leadership identity claims on the attainment of status in informal, social organizations were assessed in several organizations using multiple indices of status. The power motive Hope for Power was predictive of holding executive offices. Extraversion and Conscientiousness predicted peer-ratings of social influence. Extraversion, Emotional Stability, and Dominance were related to subjective beliefs of personal power and influence. Seeing oneself as a leader mediated the effects of personality traits and motives on subjective sense of power and attaining social influence, but not achieving formal office. Together, these findings offer an integrated look at the …

Grassroots Plea Bargaining, Josh Bowers Jun 2007

Grassroots Plea Bargaining, Josh Bowers

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

In the 1990s, New York City implemented a particularly vigorous brand of localized order-maintenance policing. Such targeted enforcement of “borderline” offenses led to a skyrocketing rate of non-felony arrests in affected (predominantly poor and minority) communities and, consequently, created a crisis of systemic legitimacy within these communities. Notably, however, enforcement was increasingly heavy-handed only on the policing end. By contrast, when it came to plea bargaining, prosecutors were providing more and more lenient no-time or short-time pleas to reduced (often non-criminal) charges. In this essay, I offer a novel (and at least partial) explanation for this leniency trend. My explanation …

Title Vii And The Protection Of Minority Languages In The American Workplace: The Search For A Justification, James Leonard Jun 2007

Title Vii And The Protection Of Minority Languages In The American Workplace: The Search For A Justification, James Leonard

Missouri Law Review

My purpose in this Article is to examine possible justifications for the EEOC's language rules under Title VII. Part II provides necessary background information, describing the EEOC rule system as well as the threegeneration process of English acquisition in immigrant families. The remainder of the Article is devoted to potential normative explanations for the EEOC rules. Part III asks whether the Guidelines promote equality interests while Parts IV and V question whether they vindicate personal autonomy or multicultural interests, respectively. I conclude that none of these arguments offers a sufficient justification for interfering with managerial judgments.

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Reflecting on her involvement in the development of service-learning for American higher education, Professor Permaul has learned that service-learning, when practiced serves society, the learner and the educational institution extremely well. She finds that service-learning as a pedagogy is very compatible with most learning and developmental theories. She further finds that service-learning is a powerful instructional tool, while fulfilling many social challenges and needs.
