Identifiable Factors Which Measure The Impact Of Social Capital Within Schools, Charlotte A. Monconduit

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In spite of much confusion related to the conceptualizing of the social capital, it remains at the forefront of understanding that relationships matter. In particular, educational relationships of interest are immersed in schools and their connection to student achievement is many times uncertain. After conducting a considerable review of the literature on social capital, the researcher undertook the task of creating an instrument to measure social capital within schools in hope of contributing greater social capital understanding and clarity. The purpose of this study was to create a valid and reliable instrument supported by strong psychometric properties to assess the …

Early Work Experience And The Transition Into Entrepreneurship, Enrico Colombatto, Arie Melnik Dec 2007

Early Work Experience And The Transition Into Entrepreneurship, Enrico Colombatto, Arie Melnik

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

We use a simple model to analyze the founding stage of new firms. Our goal is to characterize the directional causality between the expected rewards from entrepreneurship and the length of prior labor market experience that entrepreneurs possess. We test predictions about the timing of the formation of new firms on a sample of Italian entrepreneurs. We obtain three main results. First, the timing of the foundation of new firms is determined primarily by the expectation of higher income and not so much by the perception of risk. Second, earlier experience of entrepreneurs in full time employment has a positive …

Entrepreneurial Stock Brokering And Switching Costs, G. Geoffrey Booth, Orkunt M. Dalgic, Juha-Pekka Kallunki, Petri Sahlström

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Stock brokers are entrepreneurs who incur switching costs when the change brokerage houses. We use Helsinki Stock Exchange data to investigate these costs by examining whether investors are loyal to their brokers when brokers move. We find that investors who have extant relationships with the new house are more likely to attract the investors from the old houses, and savvy (knowledgeable) investors are more likely to stay with their broker.

Capital Acquisition Attitudes: Gender And Experience, Richard B. Carter, Howard Van Auken Dec 2007

Capital Acquisition Attitudes: Gender And Experience, Richard B. Carter, Howard Van Auken

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In this research we provide evidence on small firm owners' attitudes and approaches to capital acquisition. The most surprising finding is their general dissatisfaction with the capital acquisition process. Yet we found no evidence that this dissatisfaction translates into poor performance. Our analysis indicates that male-owned business were older, more likely to be technology-based, and bigger in terms of sales and assets. Male respondents were also better educated. We found no significant results for the firms owned by more experienced respondents. However, more experienced owners and male respondents were more likely to look outside resources, like governments, to provide guidance …

Tax Collection In History, Metin M. Cosgel, Thomas J. Miceli Dec 2007

Tax Collection In History, Metin M. Cosgel, Thomas J. Miceli

Economics Working Papers

Methods of tax collection employed by modern governments seem dull when compared to the rich variety observed in history. Whereas most governments today typically use salaried agents to collect taxes, various other types of contractual relationships have been observed in history, including sharing arrangements which divide the tax revenue between the government and collectors at fixed proportions, negotiated payment schemes based on the tax base, and sale of the revenue to a collector in exchange for a lump-sum payment determined at auction. We propose an economic theory of tax collection that can coherently explain the temporal and spatial variation in …

Order Without (Enforceable) Law: Why Countries Enter Into Non-Enforceable Competition Policy Chapters In Free Trade Agreements, D. Daniel Sokol Dec 2007

Order Without (Enforceable) Law: Why Countries Enter Into Non-Enforceable Competition Policy Chapters In Free Trade Agreements, D. Daniel Sokol

Chicago-Kent Law Review

There has been an explosion in the past ten to fifteen years of bilateral and regional free trade agreements in Latin America (together, preferential free trade agreements or PTAs). The purpose of PTAs is to increase trade, regulatory, and investment liberalization. As trade liberalization requires more than just a reduction of tariffs, PTAs include "chapters" in a number of areas of domestic regulation. These chapters that address domestic regulation create binding commitments to liberalize domestic regulation that may impact foreign trade. Among chapters that address domestic regulation, many of the Latin American PTAs include a chapter on antitrust or competition …

Psychological gender and biological gender served as the independent variables in the study while gender role conflict, self-esteem, and loneliness served as the dependent variables. A two-way factorial MANOVA was used as the statistical model of choice in addition to correlational analyses. A confirmatory factor analysis was also completed on the instrument used to measure gender role conflict, the Gender Role Conflict …

The Research Practices And Needs Of Non-Profit Organizations In An Urban Center, Randy Stoecker Dec 2007

The Research Practices And Needs Of Non-Profit Organizations In An Urban Center, Randy Stoecker

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

How do nonprofit organizations use data and research? What challenges do they face in conducting research and managing data? In spring of 2004, 80 nonprofit organizations in Toledo, Ohio returned a survey on their research and data needs and practices. The survey found that nonprofits collect data on a wide variety of topics, but do not use much of the data that they collect, and do not collect much data that could be useful for other groups, particularly neighborhood organizations. The average nonprofit in the survey has five employees and four volunteers who, together, spend 56 hours per week collecting, …

Public And Private Sources Of Assistance For Low-Income Households, Chi-Fang Wu, Mary Keegan Eamon

Using data from the 1996 and 2001 panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), the results indicate that a large percentage of low-income households rely on public assistance, and receipt of private assistance is much less common. Approximately 7% of the sample use both types of assistance. The findings highlight differences in combinations of public and private assistance used by different household types. Wealsofound some significant differences in …

Dismantling The Master's House : Deconstructing The Roots Of Antiblack Racism And The Construction Of The "Other" In Judaism, Christianity And Islam., John Chenault

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This critical inquiry into the social constructions of "black" and "white" identities analyzes the roles of the three "western" monotheisms (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in the cognitive and sociohistorical developments of racial slavery and antiblack racism. Specifically, it investigates the sociohistorical consequences of the inherent dualisms of the "western" monotheisms and how those dualisms are expressed in the production of social theories and systems that rely on believer/non-believer oppositions and binaries defined by a Manichaean view of the universe and a teleological conception of history that fosters and sustains an eternal holy war against infidels. What emerges from this analysis …

Family Law Federalism: Divorce And The Constitution, Ann Laquer Estin Dec 2007

Family Law Federalism: Divorce And The Constitution, Ann Laquer Estin

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

American divorce law was transformed by the Supreme Court in a series of decisions beginning with Williams v. North Carolina in 1942. These constitutional full faith and credit cases resolved a long-standing federalism problem by redefining the scope of state power over marital status. With these decisions, the Court shifted from an analysis based on the competing interests of different states to an approach that highlighted the individual interests of the parties involved. This change fundamentally altered state power over the family by extending to individuals greater control of their marital status. In the process, the Court cleared a path …

An Examination Of United Methodist Clergy, Jennifer R. Graham Dec 2007

An Examination Of United Methodist Clergy, Jennifer R. Graham

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

Research on occupational sex segregation and the gender wage gap has consistently shown differences between male and female workers with regards to both position and salary with males segregated in higher positions within companies and accruing higher salaries than females even in similar positions. Two primary explanations have emerged to explain these differences. Supply-side explanations, such as those put forth by economists, assume that the desires of male and female workers are different thus creating women’s disadvantaged work positions. Demand-side explanations, such as those examined in queuing theory, postulate that those in charge of hiring are biased towards male workers …

The Traveling Quilter: An Exploration Of The Influences On Travel Behavior, Christine Drais Dec 2007

The Traveling Quilter: An Exploration Of The Influences On Travel Behavior, Christine Drais

All Theses

ABSTRACT

Quilters have been traveling to regional, national, and international symposia since the beginning of the quilt revival in the 1970's (Bonesteel Films, (Producer), 2005, The Great American Quilt Revival, UNC-TV). These events have attracted large crowds, mostly women, yet there is little data about their travel behavior (L. Brodsky, Country Heritage Tours, personal conversation October 29, 2007). In response to the lack of information on quilting travel, this research was undertaken to determine if quilting experience, skill level and level of serious leisure predict quilting travel behavior.
This thesis examines experience use history in quilting (i.e., number of years …
