Examination Of The Allee Effect On Postlarval Recruitment And Post Settlement Survival In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Adrianna Zito
Examination Of The Allee Effect On Postlarval Recruitment And Post Settlement Survival In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Adrianna Zito
All Theses
Positive density dependence (the Allee effect) has been reported in a number of species that are attracted to conspecific cues. This effect has been shown to influence the settlement of many species of marine invertebrates. Caribbean spiny lobsters are gregarious den dwellers attracted to conspecific cues. Previous studies have suggested that the benefit of conspecific attraction is a reduced predation risk by decreasing the time to find crevice shelters (the guide effect) or by cooperative group defense once sharing shelters. I tested a third hypothesis that attraction to conspecific cues increases the settlement of lobster postlarvae into the highest quality …

Comparative Analysis Of Environmental Kuznets Curve In Central And Eastern Europe And South And East Asia, Yu-Chin Pang
Comparative Analysis Of Environmental Kuznets Curve In Central And Eastern Europe And South And East Asia, Yu-Chin Pang
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Environmental deterioration has frequently been viewed as a problem that inevitably accompanies economic development and industrialization. However, different economic backgrounds might experience different kinds and levels of environmental deterioration. This study investigated environmental deterioration in two groups of countries with comparable income levels but different economic backgrounds-transitional Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and non-transitional South and East Asian (SEA) countries.
This research utilized the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis to explain the relationships among macroeconomic indicators, country categories, and atmospheric concentrations in the CEE and SEA regions. Three research questions and six hypotheses and related sub-hypotheses were answered and tested …

A Typology And Discourse Analysis Of The Status And Appointments Of Librarians At Land Grant Universities, Mary K. Bolin
A Typology And Discourse Analysis Of The Status And Appointments Of Librarians At Land Grant Universities, Mary K. Bolin
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study examined the status of librarians at land grant universities in each state (n=50). University websites were the source of data on librarians’ employee group (faculty/staff), administrator title, rank system, tenure eligibility, and faculty senate representation. The data were analyzed to find frequencies and cross tabulations. The findings indicate four status types in the population: Professorial (n=21); Other ranks with tenure (n=14); Other ranks without tenure (n=5); Academic or professional staff (n=10). Eighty percent of the institutions in the population have librarians who are faculty (n=40), and 85% of …

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit
Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit
Theses and Dissertations
To paraphrase a well-known historian, there is too little nature in the study of history. Although environmental history is a well established field, nature and the physical environment are still often excluded agents in history pedagogy. The following essay is an effort to remedy this problem. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to define and describe environmental history and present a rationale for its inclusion as a major component of survey history courses. The second is to outline ways college teachers can include an environmental perspective in their instructional strategies. It includes three sample lesson plans that …

Design Of A Web-Based Project Tracking System, Robert F. Tschiemer
Design Of A Web-Based Project Tracking System, Robert F. Tschiemer
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This paper explores the design of a prototype Web-based database application that will support a professional project tracking system for students and Advisers. Specifically, this paper combines a relational database and web-based applications that are integrated into NET framework and PHP code technologies. The initial database-driven web application is designed for 200-300 student usage and is scalable to a 1500 student project usage. The methodology that governs the application design was determined by review of waterfall methodology approach. The chosen development methodology provides the application design and prototype construction. The actual database design and web page implementation will conclude the …

Regional Patient Safety Initiatives: The Missing Element Of Organizational Change, James G. Anderson
RCHE Publications
Data-sharing systems—where healthcare providers jointly implement a common reporting system to promote voluntary reporting, information sharing, and learning—are emerging as an important regional, state-level, and national strategy for improving patient safety. The objective of this chapter is to review the evidence regarding the effectiveness of these data-sharing systems and to report on the results of an analysis of data from the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative (PRHI). PRHI consists of 42 hospitals, purchasers and insurers in southwestern Pennsylvania that implemented Medmarx, an on-line medication error reporting systems. Analysis of data from the PRHI hospitals indicated that the number of errors and …
Seating Patterns And Their Influence On Classroom Interaction And Participation, Michele Marie Scouten
Seating Patterns And Their Influence On Classroom Interaction And Participation, Michele Marie Scouten
Education
Research was conducted to find a link between student seating patterns and levels of classroom interaction and participation. Two classrooms were observed in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District over ten days of the spring semester of 2007. Observations were conducted in two English classes at Lathrop High School. A total of 53 students and two teachers took part in the study. The primary research question centered on the relationship between seating location and classroom interaction and/or participation. Further questions dealt with student grouping according to race, gender, academic ability and age as well as other factors that may …

Volunteerism And Marital Quality Among Lds Senior Missionary Couples, Megan Oka
Volunteerism And Marital Quality Among Lds Senior Missionary Couples, Megan Oka
Theses and Dissertations
Although research has been conducted on marriage and volunteerism in later life, little is known about the impact of volunteerism on marital quality, particularly intense volunteer experiences. Missionary couples for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) leave their homes for a period ranging from 6-18 months and dedicate the majority of their time to working in church assignments. Qualitative interviews were collected from couples who had served senior couples missions for the LDS Church and returned home in the last year. The mean age of participants was 69, and the mean length of marriage for couples was …

Clustered Zoning Approaches Reduce Congestion, John R. Nolon
Clustered Zoning Approaches Reduce Congestion, John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The effect of local zoning on our lives usually goes unnoticed despite its profound influence on human behavior. Zoning controls where we live and work, how we get from point A to point B, and what sort of homes we live in. This article provides examples of successful transit-oriented development projects at the local level as well as how state and federal government can contribute to the clustering effort via financing and research programs as well as providing appropriate infrastructure.
