Adaptation, Positive Learning, And Methods Of Coping In Women With Congenital And Acquired Facial Differences, Fusang Carly Yin
Adaptation, Positive Learning, And Methods Of Coping In Women With Congenital And Acquired Facial Differences, Fusang Carly Yin
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored women with facial differences and the various adaptive pathways and positive coping mechanisms that have developed in order to handle social challenges. Currently, there is a lack of awareness and understanding about this underrepresented population, making it necessary to examine women's personal reflections and perspectives as well as their strengths. Fourteen women between the ages of 18-50 with congenital or acquired facial differences (13 congenital; 1 acquired) participated in this exploratory study. Participants were recruited based on availability and snowball sampling, along with help from the director of a non-profit facial differences organization. Participants also had to …
Putting The Body Back In Social Work : How Social Workers Experience And Differ In Levels Of Personal Body Awareness, Lauren Nancarrow Clarke
Putting The Body Back In Social Work : How Social Workers Experience And Differ In Levels Of Personal Body Awareness, Lauren Nancarrow Clarke
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to determine whether or not and if so, to what degree social workers are aware of their personal body awareness in sessions with clients. The corollary question was whether or not those with higher reported body awareness would have similar socio-demographic indicators, environmental factors, or clientele to each other. Based on current literature, it was hypothesized that social workers in general would report a low body awareness and those reporting a higher body awareness would have similar correlates of individual factors. Smith School for Social Work graduates and current students were solicited for participation in an …
Multiple Lacerations Of The Heart: When Grief Accumulates, John C. Thomas, Teresa Sours
Multiple Lacerations Of The Heart: When Grief Accumulates, John C. Thomas, Teresa Sours
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The idea of multiple lacerations of the heart is both personally and professionally a topic of great interest to us. Experience has taught us that far too many counselors fail to account for the aggravated condition of the heart as a result of multiple losses. The lure of the immediate loss or trauma from childhood can hinder one’s ability to consider the amassed emotional cholesterol. As system thinkers advocate, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Subsequently, counselors need to be aware of how multiple losses accumulate and how such build-up manifests itself in a client’s life. …

Working Trees For Wildlife
Working Trees (USDA-NAC)
Sustaining quality wildlife habitat is challenging, especially where agricultural fields offer little plant diversity and in suburban areas where human development has fragmented the landscape.
Increasingly, these areas are managed primarily for people. But, an amazing variety of animals call the same areas home and depend on us to make sure that their needs are met.
Working Trees are trees and shrubs, especially native species, that are in the right place to do a specific job. Whether Working Trees come in the form of a windbreak to enhance crop or livestock production or a riparian forest buffer to filter storm …

An Emic View Of Student Writing And The Writing Process, Michael Hass, Jan Osborn
An Emic View Of Student Writing And The Writing Process, Michael Hass, Jan Osborn
English Faculty Articles and Research
This study uses student reflections of previous success in academic writing to guide instructors as they design writing assignments. Seventy-one students in five classes responded to a questionnaire designed to help them identify particularly successful writing experiences and reflect on the circumstances, strategies, and methods they believed impacted their success. Student responses to these questions were analyzed to identify broad categories or themes. This process produced an "emic" or insider's view of what constitutes successful writing assignments and writing process. The findings suggest that students self report their writing as successful when the writing assignment engenders engagement, commitment, collaboration, a …

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communication, Gregory A. Smith
Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communication, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Evangelicals face significant obstacles as they seek to make their publications accessible to potential readers. This study measures the extent to which evangelical scholarly journals have made their contents available in electronic form. Thirty-five journals--all active, refereed, evangelical in perspective, and published in English--were chosen for analysis. Two serials management tools and individual journal Web sites provided data regarding electronic accessibility. Twenty-six of the journals are available in some electronic form--most commonly in one or more aggregated databases. Evangelical information professionals could play a significant role in helping to make additional evangelical journal content available electronically.

Community-Based Long-Term Care: Wisconsin Stays Ahead, Judith D. Moore, Carol O'Shaughnessy, Lisa Sprague
National Health Policy Forum
This report describes a site visit to Wisconsin in August 2007 that focused on the use of home and community-based services, both public and private, to delay or avoid the need for institutional care. Wisconsin was chosen because it has long been a leader among states in developing such services for the elderly and persons with disabilities. At the time of the visit, a managed long-term care program, Family Care, was operating on a pilot basis in five counties. The Partnership Program, a four-site demonstration integrating acute and long-term care for the dual eligible population (both frail elderly and younger …

Variables Related To Social Service And Justice Advocacy Activities In Minneapolis Area Synod Congregations Of The Evangelical Lutheran Church In America, Mary Simonson Clark
Theses and Graduate Projects
This thesis reports on the initial phase of research regarding the variables related to social service and justice advocacy activities of congregations in the Minneapolis Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. An extensive review of literature from a variety of disciplines and resources provides the basis for this study. Theoretical frameworks pertinent to this work include resource mobilization, ecological systems, and social justice theories as well as the contextual framework of Lutheranism's Christian beliefs. In addition to congregations' demographic and belief variables, the literature emphasizes relational community organizing to develop awareness among groups from the dominant culture …
