"George Fox University" In Founded By Friends: A Collection Of Essays On The Quaker Colleges In America, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "George Fox University is owned by Northwest Yearly Meeting, which appoints all its trustees. Four-sevenths of these must be Friends, and this relationship keeps the institution close to its parent religious body. This being the case, a high degree of interaction exists between Northwest Yearly Meeting and the university, and this relationship is felt to be mutually beneficial. While the number of Friends students in the traditional undergraduate program has remained between 74 and 145 over the past three decades or more (making up between 4 and 15 percent of the traditional undergraduate population), aspects of Quaker identity are …

Using The Novel To Teach Multiculturalism, Michelle Loris Jan 2007

Using The Novel To Teach Multiculturalism, Michelle Loris

English Faculty Publications

Description of a fourteen week course taught by Michelle Loris, professor of English at Sacred Heart University. The course, titled Recent Ethnic American Fictions, introduced students to several concepts from contemporary literary theory. The theories included New Criticism, Deconstruction, Cultural Studies, New Historicism, and Feminist Theory. The assumption was that these concepts would give students the tools to become critical readers, which would then provide them with a deeper understanding of these multicultural novels and their particular cultural contexts.

For a semester, reading and thinking about these multicultural novels engaged and challenged the students' assumptions about themselves and the …

Integrating The Humanities And Sciences: The Human Journey: Sacred Heart University's Common Core, Michelle Loris Ph.D., Nicole Cauvin, Kathryn Lafontana

English Faculty Publications

One way to respond to the crisis in the humanities is to integrate learning for our students. In fact one of higher education's greatest challenges today is for faculty to develop ways to integrate knowledge and learning across the disiciplines. This essay describes a common core curriculum, THE HUMAN JOURNEY, which engages students in an integrated, common, and coherent understanding of the humanities, arts, and sciences, and the Catholic intellectual tradition framed by four enduring questions of human meaning and value. THE HUMAN JOURNEY is a five course sequence including literature, history, the social and natural sciences, and religious studies and …

Religion Beyond The Empire: British Religious Politics In China, 1842-1866, Joshua Thomas Marr Jan 2007

Religion Beyond The Empire: British Religious Politics In China, 1842-1866, Joshua Thomas Marr

LSU Master's Theses

Nineteenth-Century Britain was known for its political and military power – the British Empire – but also for its religious fervor. This religious spirit was prominent in England and throughout the British Empire, through the creation of Protestant mission organizations that sent missionaries throughout the world. China presented a unique mission field for early British missionaries, as it was not a formal part of the British Empire and it had such a large population of people who had never been exposed to Protestant Christianity. The years 1842 to 1866 were the formative period of the British Protestant mission in China. …

Destruction At The Root: Religious Genocide In Tibet?, Jackson Elijah Sherratt Jan 2007

Destruction At The Root: Religious Genocide In Tibet?, Jackson Elijah Sherratt

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

What constitutes genocide is a matter of considerable debate. Stripped to its theoretical core, however, genocide requires the presence of a) perpetrators and victims, and b) the established intent of the former to destroy the latter, by c) such methods that can be reasonably be considered genocidal. As such, isolating and identifying these variables becomes an essential task for anyone wishing to establish that a particular historical event, or set of events, amounts to genocide. The United Nations Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime and Genocide (UNGC) represents the legal standard in this regard, and codified therein …

Tradition, Modernization And Public Health Policy: Combating Hiv/Aids In Senegal, Hannah Godlove Jan 2007

Tradition, Modernization And Public Health Policy: Combating Hiv/Aids In Senegal, Hannah Godlove

Honors Papers

This thesis explores how traditional beliefs and institutions have been used in a nationwide campaign against the spread of HIV / AIDS in the case· of Senegal. Relying on the works of Max Weber, Edward Shils, and Erving Goffinan, the theoretical chapter of the thesis develops the concepts of traditionalism, modernization, rationalization, and social stigma. This theoretical framework is applied to the case of Senegal in order to support the idea that the tradition of Sufi Islam played an important role in the nationwide campaigns against AIDS. However, I argue that a successful national policy against HIV / AIDS must …

Tantra: An Analysis, Damien L. Mcdonald Jan 2007

Tantra: An Analysis, Damien L. Mcdonald

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The tradition of Tantra, which is often without clear classification amongst scholars, does not have a single definition that thoroughly or accurately describes it. Because of the multifaceted nature of Tantric teachings, which include multiple goals and methods of practice, the task of defining Tantra is arduous at best. Without an agreed upon definition amongst scholars, Tantra can broadly be viewed as a connection to and simultaneous divergence from Vedic and Brahmanical teachings. This classification can be illustrated through an analysis of the Vedic and Tantric pantheon and rituals performed by each group’s practitioners. Additionally, an analysis of accounts by …

This article is a report of a roundtable I moderated at the 2006 meeting of the Western Conference on British Studies. It proposes some directions religious studies might take in the 21st century; it is also the first publication to mention of the British Pulpit Online, an emerging digital resource for the study of the sermon from 1688-1901.

The Faith Of Christ, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2007

The Faith Of Christ, Gaye Strathearn

AT THE 1988 MEETING OF THE Pauline Theology Group, a debate exploded that had been slowly percolating since the time of Martin Luther.¹ The debate focused on the translation and associated theological implications of eight passages (Romans 3:22, 26; Galatians 2:16, 20; 3:22, 26; Ephesians 3:12; Philippians 3:9).² Each of these passages consists of a phrase with the Greek word pistis (“faith”) in a genitive construction with a title for Jesus.³ Paul uses seven of them in his discussions of justification, showing how a believer is “made righteous.” The eighth passage, Ephesians 3:12, uses the genitive construction to describe how …

Self-Forgiveness: A Narrative Phenomenological Study, John Beiter Jan 2007

Self-Forgiveness: A Narrative Phenomenological Study, John Beiter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation critically explored both theoretical and research findings pertaining to self-forgiveness, especially as it related to psychology. An important, though rather apparent finding or conclusion derived from this literature review was that there is an astounding paucity of both theoretical and research work about self-forgiveness within psychology. This lack or shortcoming holds, surprisingly, even in those disciplines perhaps associated more intuitively with self-forgiveness, for example theological and religious studies, and philosophy. Moreover, a contamination, conflation, or supplementarity characterized the relationship between forgiveness and self-forgiveness, such that no clear consensus exists with respect to the distinctions or similarities between those …

Fitting Under The Marriage Canopy: Same-Sex Weddings As Rites Of Conformity In A Canadian Liberal Jewish Context, Shari Rochelle Lash Jan 2007

Fitting Under The Marriage Canopy: Same-Sex Weddings As Rites Of Conformity In A Canadian Liberal Jewish Context, Shari Rochelle Lash

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The topic of same-sex marriage continues to be a source of controversy, yet the publicly recognized commitments between lesbian and gay partners is an emerging reality in the twenty-first century, especially in North America. This thesis focuses on the ritual aspects of same sex marriage by exploring the ways in which weddings are adapted to accommodate the needs of a lesbian or gay couple, particularly within Judaism, a tradition in which the components of a wedding ceremony are historically and culturally significnat. Drawing from participant observation and fieldwork interviews with Jewish lesbians in Toronto, this work examines how wedding ceremonies …

Hate Studies Through A Constructivist And Critical Pedagogical Approach, James M. Mohr Jan 2007

Hate Studies Through A Constructivist And Critical Pedagogical Approach, James M. Mohr

Journal of Hate Studies

Most of us are probably familiar with the child’s lament made during dinner: “I hate vegetables.” If you are a teacher, you may have heard students announce with conviction, “I hate homework.” It seems that everyone hates someone, something, or some action; so what value is there in a field of hate studies? Hate, when discussed as a strong feeling toward something one dislikes, appears simply as an emotion that does not deserve the special recognition of having an entire field committed to its research. However, this narrow focus on this one aspect of hate leaves ignored them very real …

The Status Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In The Discipline, Paul D. Witman, Laurie Richlin Jan 2007

The Status Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In The Discipline, Paul D. Witman, Laurie Richlin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The concept of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) was developed over 15 years ago. Because scholarly recognition comes from the discipline, the researchers determined to find out how a range of disciplines deal with the SoTL. In that time, how has the SoTL been integrated into and used by the various academic disciplines? What publication outlets are available to professors within each of the disciplines to present and publish on the SoTL? This survey review of current associations, conferences, and journals examines the SoTL in 20 different disciplines as demonstrated by scholarly production within these disciplines. Adoption levels …

Love Of God And Unity Of Wisdom In Plato And Leibniz, Tinu Ruparell Jan 2007

Love Of God And Unity Of Wisdom In Plato And Leibniz, Tinu Ruparell

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In what follows I wish to consider the following question, the relevance of which should be fairly obvious for a discussion on the love of God: does love flow from wisdom or wisdom flow from love? The question is at the heart of much Christian reflection on the nature of the love of God and how it is to be known.

A Woman's Kind Of Love: Female Longing In The Tamil Alvar Poetry, Archana Venkatesan Jan 2007

A Woman's Kind Of Love: Female Longing In The Tamil Alvar Poetry, Archana Venkatesan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In the eighth section of Andal's Nacciyar Tirumoli, a woman calls to the clouds and bids them to take a message of love to her delinquent lover, Vishnu, here figured as the lord of Venkatam. In the opening verse of the decad, she begins by plaintively questioning the clouds of her beloved's whereabouts only to end with a bitter complaint about her sullied womanhood -- pen-nirmai. Bracketed by her eager questions -- "has the lord of Venkatam come with you" -- and her bitter complaint -- "how does this bring him pride" -- is the landscape of her …
