The Relationship Between Alexithymia, Wellness, And Substance Dependence, Benjamin J. Warner
The Relationship Between Alexithymia, Wellness, And Substance Dependence, Benjamin J. Warner
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between alexithymia, wellness, and substance dependence. Exploration of the relationship between alexithymia, emotional development, and wellness is largely absent in the literature, as is the use of wellness orientation in substance dependence treatment. This study was constructed from two samples, substance dependent clients in residential treatment in New Orleans, LA, and Austin, TX, and undergraduates from the University of New Orleans and the University of Texas at Austin. The total sample size for the study was n = 200. Each participant was administered the TAS-20 and the WEL. Four groups of n = 50 were …
Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A strong, distinctive professional identity is essential for the survival of mental health professions (Fall, Leviov, Jennings, & Eberts, 2000). Although the literature of the various mental health professions offers varying definitions of professional identity, differentiating their services from one another continues to be a problem (Remley & Herlihy, 2005). This uncertainty inhibits uniformity within professions, and causes confusion within the public as to what each mental health field actually does and does not do. Psychologists and social workers have dedicated years of effort to define their professions, providing extensive literature rooted in the history, values, beliefs, and the knowledge …

Teaching A Doctoral Course In Consultation: The Parallel Team Process, Arnold B. Coven, Jennifer Araujo, Katherine G. Van Hull, Shedeh Tavokoli-Moayed, Ann Collins, Jina Enwiya, Kathleen Boyes
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
A parallel team model of teaching consultation is presented. The model highlights experiential group counseling theory, techniques, and Yalom’s (1995) identified group therapeutic factors. The goal was to increase the students’ awareness and knowledge of consultation skills and teamwork in order to model and teach the same skills. The parallel interaction between the consultant and consultee teams is illustrated during the consultation stages of entry, problem/strength identification (diagnosis), intervention, and evaluation. The learning experience stimulated ideas for teaching consultation and the parallel team process.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of nine variables with attitudes of Counselor Educators toward persons with disabilities. The objective was to identify several potential variables that may influence attitudes. Nine variables were examined to test their relationship with attitude among the participants. The independent variables were: a) age; b) gender; c) ethnicity; d) amount of contact with disabled persons; e) knowledge of disability legislation; f) comfort with type of disability; g) theoretical orientation; h) …

Allocation And Use Of Section 5310 Funds In Urban And Rural America, Tom Seekins, Alexandra Enders, Alison Pepper, Stephen Sticka
Journal of Public Transportation
Public transportation is a critical part of a community’s infrastructure for people with disabilities. Section 5310 of the Transportation Equity Act is a Federal program of capital assistance to address the mobility needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities. We identified 4,835 Section 5310 recipients in 49 states and the District of Columbia, and randomly selected 750 for a mail survey. The majority were organizations serving senior citizens or individuals with developmental disabilities. Only one was a tribal entity. Overall, Sec. 5310 vehicles made up 32 percent of the respondents’ fleets and 75 percent were lift equipped. More Sec. …

Bereavement is the process of suffering that follows the loss of a living being that is significant to someone. When one suffers, she or he has to endure an unpleasant experience, in the case of bereavement, the loss of something special to the person. This loss most often is a loved one but could also include the loss of a pet, relationship, or physical or mental capability. This state of suffering is called grief. In describing his grief, C. S.
