Canby School District: Enrollment Forecasts 2007-08 To 2011-12, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Charles Rynerson, Vivian Siu

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

The Canby School District (CSD) enrolled 5,075 students in Fall 2006, a decrease of 171 students (3.3 percent) from Fall 2005. Much of the K-12 decrease was due to a relatively small kindergarten class entering and a record large 12th grade class graduating. Also, unlike most previous years, the District did not have a net gain of students due to migration of families with children. This report presents the results of a demographic study conducted by the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC). The study includes analysis of population, housing and enrollment trends affecting the District in recent years …

Exploring With Stathmin And Scg10 Interactomes, Jim Jose Aloor Jan 2007

Exploring With Stathmin And Scg10 Interactomes, Jim Jose Aloor

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Signal transduction involves a signal at the cell's surface being transmitted internally via a chain of molecules to generate an adequate response. Signaling malfunctions are responsible for many human diseases. Signaling mechanisms are conserved in evolution but complexity is brought about by modifications, regulation, multiple-pathways, cross talk between pathways etc. Signaling molecules conserved through evolution are considered basic and indispensable. The stathmin family (Stathmin, SCG10 etc.) belongs to this class of molecules. Stathmin (also known as oncoprotein 18, prosolin, leukemia-associated phosphoprotein 18 and others) is a highly conserved, phosphorylated cytosolic protein with apparent ubiquitous expression. Stathmin protein is encoded by …

The Portrayal Of Science In Children's Television, Tristi Bercegeay Charpentier Jan 2007

The Portrayal Of Science In Children's Television, Tristi Bercegeay Charpentier

LSU Master's Theses

Scholars argue that a scientifically literate public is a requirement for a democracy. Children are watching television more today than ever before, and studies have shown that children learn academically educational content from television. The Children's Television Act of 1990 requires broadcasters to provide educational and informational content for children. This study qualitatively evaluated a sample of 38 children's television programs to obtain a description of the scientific content contained in children's television. The study yielded a large quantity of scientific content, yet the quality of the content left much to be desired. Based on the findings of this study, …

The Anatomy Of A Coastal Bay/Lake System, Michelle Greene Jan 2007

The Anatomy Of A Coastal Bay/Lake System, Michelle Greene

LSU Master's Theses

A comprehensive and integrated approach involving sedimentology, shallow surface geophysics and radio-chemistry was used to understand lakebed sediment dynamics in Little Lake. This methodology attempted to (1) define the morphology and origin of the lake, (2) understand the variability in lake-bottom sediments, (3) assess short-term and long-term sediment accumulation rates, and (4) image lakebed features. Subbottom chirp, single beam echo sounder, and side scan sonar data were collected to define hydrographic depths, lateral variability in seabed sediment type, lakebed features, and shallow subsurface structure. Sediment samples were taken at representative locations throughout the lake and particle size distributions were determined. …

Research Summary: Characteristics Of Exemplary Schools For Young Adolescents, P. Gayle Andrews, Micki M. Caskey, Vincent A. Anfara Jr. Jan 2007

Research Summary: Characteristics Of Exemplary Schools For Young Adolescents, P. Gayle Andrews, Micki M. Caskey, Vincent A. Anfara Jr.

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two dangers are associated with any list purporting to include the characteristics of exemplary schools for young adolescents. One danger is a perception that the list is exhaustive—that it includes everything that needs to be considered. In reality, a list cannot capture the subtleties and complexities of schooling. A second danger is that each component will be seen as somehow self-contained, something that can be addressed in isolation. Instead, research demonstrates that the characteristics listed above are “an interacting and interdependent group of practices that form a unified whole… [that] must be dealt with holistically, systemically, to ensure success” (Jackson …

Research Summary: Young Adolescents’ Developmental Characteristics, Micki M. Caskey, Vincent A. Anfara Jr. Jan 2007

Research Summary: Young Adolescents’ Developmental Characteristics, Micki M. Caskey, Vincent A. Anfara Jr.

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

Early adolescence is a distinct period of human growth and development situated between childhood and adolescence. During this remarkable stage of the life cycle, young adolescents (10- to 15-year-olds) experience rapid and significant developmental change. Recognizing and understanding the unique developmental characteristics (traits associated with human growth) of early adolescence and their relationship to the educational program (i.e., curriculum, instruction, and assessment) and to the structure of the middle school (e.g., fl exible block scheduling, advisory programs, and team teaching) are central tenets of middle grades education.

A Horticultural Study Of Liriope And Ophiopogon: Nomenclature, Morphology, And Culture, Mary Catherine Broussard Jan 2007

A Horticultural Study Of Liriope And Ophiopogon: Nomenclature, Morphology, And Culture, Mary Catherine Broussard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Liriopogons are evergreen perennials with a confusing taxonomy. New cultivars are being rapidly selected and named. The landscape industry uses them extensively and they are being planted in improper sites. Morphological studies were done at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to identify cultivars by comparing plants to botanical keys. Cultural studies were done at Burden Station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by comparing cultivars in sun and 63% shade, and by greenhouse fertilization experiments, and pruning experiments. Plants were harvested, studied, dried and mounted in the Louisiana State University Herbarium as permanent record. Of the 19 cultivars of Liriope …

Simulation Study Evaluating Alternative Initial Responses To Formation Fluid Influx During Managed Pressure Drilling, Asis Kumar Das Jan 2007

Simulation Study Evaluating Alternative Initial Responses To Formation Fluid Influx During Managed Pressure Drilling, Asis Kumar Das

LSU Master's Theses

Managed pressure drilling is an innovative technique to precisely manage wellbore pressure. It is particularly applicable for reducing the risk of a kick or lost returns when drilling with a narrow window between pore pressure and fracture pressure. The constant bottomhole pressure method of managed pressure drilling uses annular frictional pressure and choke pressure in addition to mud hydrostatic pressure to achieve precise wellbore pressure control. This project investigated alternative initial responses to kicks to determine which would be most effective and reliable under different well scenarios when applying the constant bottomhole pressure method of managed pressure drilling. Three different …

Environmental Factors Affecting The Distribution Of Native And Invasive Aquatic Plants In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, U.S.A., Rachel Cathleen Walley Jan 2007

Environmental Factors Affecting The Distribution Of Native And Invasive Aquatic Plants In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, U.S.A., Rachel Cathleen Walley

LSU Master's Theses

Over the last century, the aquatic macrophyte community of the Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB) has become increasingly dominated by invasive species. I used digital photography and GIS software to determine ARB macrophyte community composition by measuring percent cover of each plant species within five 0.25-m2 quadrats sampled from 108 sites in 2005 and 103 sites in 2006. Macrophyte community data and measurements of soil and water physicochemistry at each site were used to investigate environmental associations of the macrophytes inhabiting bayou, lake, excavated canal, and swamp habitats. Analyses indicated substantial differences in physicochemical conditions among habitats, but none of the …

Study Of Demolding Process In Thermal Imprint Lithography Via Numerical Simulation And Experimental Approaches, Zhichao Song Jan 2007

Study Of Demolding Process In Thermal Imprint Lithography Via Numerical Simulation And Experimental Approaches, Zhichao Song

LSU Master's Theses

The objective of present study was to analyze the mechanical behavior of polymer resist during the demolding process, such as stress distribution and evolution; distortion and tilt of microstructures in thermal imprint lithography, a new emerging technique in mass production of micro/nanoscale patterns. One of the most challenging technical issues for thermal imprint lithography is the structural damages during demolding process. Thermal stress, adhesion force and friction force all play important roles in determination of the success of demolding and it is crucial to understand the underlying physics in order to optimize the structure and process design. In present study, …

The Curious Incident Of The Law Firm That Did Nothing In The Night-Time, Nancy B. Rapoport Jan 2007

The Curious Incident Of The Law Firm That Did Nothing In The Night-Time, Nancy B. Rapoport

Scholarly Works

This essay argues that organizations (here, the Milbank, Tweed law firm) often ignore obviously bad behavior by their employees because of various psychological and sociological factors that prevent them from recognizing the behavior as bad in the first place.

The Spirit Of 1968: Toward Abolishing Terry Doctrine, Frank Rudy Cooper Jan 2007

The Spirit Of 1968: Toward Abolishing Terry Doctrine, Frank Rudy Cooper

Scholarly Works

In this essay, Professor Frank Rudy Cooper summarizes how the Terry opinion's refusal to apply the probable cause standard made Fourth Amendment doctrine more conservative. He then suggests that the result has gone largely unchallenged because whites have been willing to trade decreases in the civil liberties of blacks for perceived increases in crime control. Prof Cooper concludes by calling on us to consider returning to the spirit of the beginning of 1968 by abolishing Terry doctrine.

Fluid Flow In The Central North Slope Foreland Basin, Alaska, Anna Marie Bélanger Jan 2007

Fluid Flow In The Central North Slope Foreland Basin, Alaska, Anna Marie Bélanger

LSU Master's Theses

Previous studies of the areal variations in heat flow and spatial variations in formation water salinity and hydraulic head are consistent with the existence of a currently active, topographically-driven regional fluid flow regime in the National Petroleum Reserve Alaska (NPRA) portion of the western North Slope foreland basin. This conclusion is also supported by the results of numerical modeling of fluid flow and heat transport in the area. This work has now been extended to the east. The results of this study demonstrate that the Permian though Cenozoic age sediments of the central North Slope foreland basin have been significantly …

Quasi Group Based Crypto-System, Maruti Venkat Kartik Satti Jan 2007

Quasi Group Based Crypto-System, Maruti Venkat Kartik Satti

LSU Master's Theses

For electronic commerce and other applications it is required to encrypt data that is transmitted over an unsecured channel. The data is encrypted/randomized using a key. Algorithms such as DES and ECC randomize the data such that un-authorized user cannot decrypt it .This thesis presents a practical implementation of a quasi group based multilevel, indexed scrambling transformation for use in signal encryption. Results of experiments with text and speech scrambling are presented. It is shown that the quasi group transformation maximizes the entropy at the output, which is desirable for a good system. This system provides extremely large group of …

Properties Of Silica-Polypeptide Composite Particles, Jianhong Qiu Jan 2007

Properties Of Silica-Polypeptide Composite Particles, Jianhong Qiu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Studies of grafting polymer on surfaces with chemical bonds started in the 1970’s, but few projects have focused on grafting polypeptide on spherical particles. In this research, polypeptides poly(å-carbobenzyloxy-L-lysine) (PCBL) or poly(ã-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG) were grafted on silica sphere surfaces by using the “grafting from” method. The polypeptide-grafted silica spheres are called SiPCPs. The growth of polypeptide chains as a function of monomer amount and reaction time was explored. The properties of a mixture of PBLG rod-like polymer and PBLG SiPCPs were investigated. At high concentrations of these two components, the phase behavior was studied. At low concentrations of PBLG, the …

Carbonated Sections From Komatiite Flow- Top Alteration Zones In The Barberton Greenstone Belt: Implications For Near-Surface Archean Environments, Judith E. F. Stoute Jan 2007

Carbonated Sections From Komatiite Flow- Top Alteration Zones In The Barberton Greenstone Belt: Implications For Near-Surface Archean Environments, Judith E. F. Stoute

LSU Master's Theses

Over a dozen komatiitic flows in the 3.2-3.5 Ga Barberton Greenstone Belt are topped with unique green silica- and carbonate-rich rocks, which likely formed from interaction of the cooling lava flow with seawater shortly after deposition. This study focuses on an alteration zone in the Mendon Formation. Two styles of alteration are observed in this alteration zone: silicification and carbonation. The goal of this study is to characterize the carbonates in the alteration zone, constrain the timing of alteration, test whether the alteration zones are due to interaction with seawater after deposition, and estimate the elemental fluxes between the rock …

(Mis)Translation In The Work Of Omer Fast, Kelli Bodle Jan 2007

(Mis)Translation In The Work Of Omer Fast, Kelli Bodle

LSU Master's Theses

For the majority of people, video art does not have a major impact on their daily lives. Between ubiquitous television monitors and incessant internet pop-ups, attention paid to a video in an art gallery is passing at best. How can one's video creations make an impression on such an already visually-immersed culture? Video artist Omer Fast, uses editorial effects such as dubbing, mistranslations, and splicing in his documentary-style works to attract the attention of, and later alienate, his audience. This essay analyzes Fast's oeuvre and deconstructs the ways in which he attracts audience interest and subsequently encourages his audiences, through …

Characterization And Analysis Of Hybrid Electronic Materials For Molecular Based Devices, Sathish Thiruvengadam Jan 2007

Characterization And Analysis Of Hybrid Electronic Materials For Molecular Based Devices, Sathish Thiruvengadam

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of this work is to characterize and to analyze hybrid electronic materials (HEMs) using fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy and conductive probe-atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) in order to investigate the electrical and optical properties of these materials. Currently, research efforts to characterize novel organic materials for the determination of molecular level transport properties are of great interest.[6] One of the most interesting organic materials is the porphyrin molecule, which exhibits behavior useful for memory applications.[4] Colloidal CdS quantum dots (Q-CdS) capped with dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) and thiol functionalized porphyrin molecules are explored for their potential application to next-generation hybrid electronic …

Photo-Control Of Antisense Activity In Cell Culture Using Caged Oligodeoxynucleotides, Mindi Huguet Faubion Jan 2007

Photo-Control Of Antisense Activity In Cell Culture Using Caged Oligodeoxynucleotides, Mindi Huguet Faubion

LSU Master's Theses

Antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (AS ODNs) are short single-stranded pieces of DNA that are designed to hybridize with messenger RNA and thus offer a powerful technique for controlling gene expression. Phosphorothioate AS ODNs are a well-established modification of the traditional phosphodiester structure that increase the in vitro half-life of AS ODN activity. In this work, we describe a method for controlling the hybridization activity of PS ODNs in cell culture with a photo-reversible mechanism. The influence of a photocaging compound, 1-(4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrophenyl)diazoethane (DMNPE) on hybridization of ISIS 2302, a 20-mer PS ODN, was modeled using a molecular beacon assay. Based on this model, …

The Agriculturalists Of The Poole-Rose Ossuary: A Study Of The Femora And Tibiae, Melissa L. Moreno Jan 2007

The Agriculturalists Of The Poole-Rose Ossuary: A Study Of The Femora And Tibiae, Melissa L. Moreno

LSU Master's Theses

Dr. Heather McKillop of Louisiana State University was asked by the Alderville First Nation of Ontario in 1990 to excavate the Poole-Rose ossuary in 1990. This mass burial consisted of hundreds of mixed disarticulated and de-fleshed individuals as well as three articulated individuals laid in flexed positions. No artifacts were discovered with the bodies. Due to the absence of stratified soil layers from different periods, McKillop estimated the ossuary occurred during one burial event- “The Feast of the Dead.” Radiocarbon dating found the ossuary to be from A.D. 1550 ± 50 years (McKillop and Jackson 1991). I estimated sex according …
