Our previous study documented expression of a male-transmitted cytochrome c oxidase subunit II protein (MCOX2), with a C-terminus extension (MCOX2e), in unionoidean bivalve testes and sperm mitochondria. Here, we present evidence demonstrating that MCOX2 is seasonally expressed in testis, with a peak shortly before fertilization that is independent of sperm density. MCOX2 is localized to the inner and outer sperm mitochondrial membranes and the MCOX2 antibody’s epitope is conserved across >65 million years of evolution. We also demonstrate the presence of male-transmitted mtDNA and season-specific MCOX2 spatial variation in ovaries. We hypothesize …

Flower Shaped Vertical Alignment Liquid Crystal Display With Wide Viewing Angle And Fast Response Time, Shin-Tson Wu, Qi Hong, Ruibo Lu, Xinzhang Wu
UCF Patents
A novel vertical alignment liquid crystal display with a structure having a flower-shaped vertical alignment (FVA) has the properties of fast response, high contrast ratio and a wide view angle. The method for making the device and structure of the FVA comprises the arrangement of: a first substrate with a protrusion shaped electrode as the pixel electrode; and a second substrate as the common electrode; aligning layers formed on said first and second substrates providing liquid crystal vertical alignment; liquid crystal materials filling a space between said first and second substrates as a liquid crystal cell; a linear polarizer and …

"Under The Bloody Hatchet Of The Haitians": Thomas Jeffersonís Foreign Policy Concerning The Haitian Revolution, 1791-1806, Joseph A. Boyd
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
At first glance Thomas Jefferson's presidential actions concerning the Haitian Revolution seem to denote racially motivated decisions predicated upon fear. However, through a deeper analysis of primary documents, Jefferson's position appears more economically and politically ambitious. By 1791, the French colony of Saint Domingue held the title of the richest colony in the Caribbean and the world's leading producer of sugar. In addition, Saint Domingue consumed about sixteen percent of all of America's exports. Jefferson's personal opinions concerning revolution and trade on the island of Saint Domingue contradict the statements of his administration. Partisan politics manifested a stern voice within …

Dreamwork With Children: Perceptions And Practice Of School-Based Mental Health Professionals, Rosalia Rodriguez Huermann
Theses and Dissertations
Forty nine public school mental health practitioners (i.e., school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers) completed a survey about working with dreams when counseling students. Most practitioners in this sample reported having at least one student bring up dreams during counseling and spent some time in counseling working with students' dreams. Practitioners addressed dreams more frequently in situations where the student was having troubling dreams or nightmares, and/or was dealing with death and grief. They also acknowledged working with dreams with students who were diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, were emotionally disturbed, suffered from recurrent dreams, were depressed, …
