Grass Phylogeny And Classification: Conflict Of Morphology And Molecules, Bryan K. Simon Dec 2007

Grass Phylogeny And Classification: Conflict Of Morphology And Molecules, Bryan K. Simon

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The grass family (Poaceae) has been recognized as a unique lineage for more than 200 years, based initially on characters of inflorescence and spikelet morphology and corroborated by anatomical and other features in the latter half of the twentieth century. There have been a number of attempts to derive a phylogeny of sections of the family from structural (morphological and anatomical) characters. However, more recently the Grass Phylogeny Working Group (2001) applied cladistic principles to the whole family using molecular and structural characters. This study produced a single most-parsimonious tree from six molecular sequence data sets, chloroplast restriction site data, …

Phylogeny Of Triticeae (Poaceae) Based On Three Organelle Genes, Two Single-Copy Nuclear Genes, And Morphology, Ole Seberg, Gitte Petersen Dec 2007

Phylogeny Of Triticeae (Poaceae) Based On Three Organelle Genes, Two Single-Copy Nuclear Genes, And Morphology, Ole Seberg, Gitte Petersen

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Triticeae are renowned for their complicated taxonomy, but their phylogeny is equally intricate and perplexing, and remains largely unresolved. Based on morphology and nucleotide sequences from two plastid genes (rbcL, rpoA), one mitochondrial gene (coxII), and two single-copy nuclear genes (DMC1, EF-G), the most comprehensive hypothesis (both with respect to taxa and data points) of the phylogeny of diploid Triticeae to date is presented. The incongruence length difference tests clearly indicate that the four logical data partitions (morphology and the three genome compartments) are mutually incongruent, except the mitochondrial and nuclear sequences. …

Fall Field Report, August-November 2007, W. Ross Silcock Dec 2007

Fall Field Report, August-November 2007, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

This was essentially a normal fall season in Nebraska, with no major weather events or significant shifts in breeding or migration ranges, although a possible exception is a first record of Lesser Goldfinch breeding in the state. One observer made the point, though, that the hard freeze in the spring affected seed and fruit crops for fall, most conspicuously resulting in fewer large American Robin flocks. Excellent water conditions in the Rainwater Basin were welcome, but few herons and egrets were present, and no unusual breeding events were reported there.

As winter approached, however, increased numbers of a few finch …

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr. Dec 2007

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When I first started teaching, creating an exam for my upper division courses was a genuinely exciting process. The material felt fresh and relatively unexplored (at least by me), and I remember often feeling pleasantly overwhelmed with what seemed like a vast supply of intriguing and engrossing exam-ready problems. Crafting the perfect exam, one that was noticeably inviting, exceedingly fair, and unavoidably illuminating, was a real joy.

Os-Level Virtualization And Its Applications, Yang Yu Dec 2007

Os-Level Virtualization And Its Applications, Yang Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

OS-level virtualization is a technology that partitions the operating system to create multiple isolated Virtual Machines (VM). An OS-level VM is a virtual execution environment that can be forked instantly from the base operating environment. OS-level virtualization has been widely used to improve security, manageability and availability of today’s complex software environment, with small runtime and resource overhead, and with minimal changes to the existing computing infrastructure. A main challenge with OS-level virtualization is how to achieve strong isolation among VMs that share a common base OS. In this dissertation we study major OS components of Windows NT kernel, and …

Detection Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls In The Rio Grande Basin Above Cochiti Dam: Sources & Significance, Anthony D. Edwards

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been detected with increasing frequency in water and fish tissue samples in the Rio Grande Basin above Cochiti Dam (RGBACD), which correlates with the use of improved analytical methods for quantifying PCBs. Levels of PCBs identified in some fish have exceeded levels considered safe for human consumption, resulting in a Fish Consumption Advisory' for Abiquiu and Cochiti Reservoirs and the Rio Grande from Pojoaque Creek to Frijoles Canyon (Bandelier National Monument). In June of 2007, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) listed seven water bodies in the RGBACD as impaired due to elevated concentrations of PCBs …

Associations And Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms And Smoking Among Adolescents In United States, Bonnie Choi Mo Dec 2007

Associations And Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms And Smoking Among Adolescents In United States, Bonnie Choi Mo

Social Work Theses - Archive

Studies done on the association of smoking and depression found inconclusive results in the direction of the association. The present study utilized public data from the Add Health to examine the associations between depressive symptoms and smoking concurrently and prospectively in adolescents, predictors of current smoking, and associations between concurrent depressive levels and smoking cessation status. The results indicate depressive symptoms promote concurrent and prospective smoking behavior. Higher levels of depressive symptoms at Wave I was characteristic of participants who smoked in the past and smoked regular. Higher depressive symptoms in Wave II were indicative of smoking initiation and regular …

Exercise Makes You Feel Good, But Does Feeling Good Make You Exercise?: An Examination Of Obese Dieters, Robert A. Carels, Carissa Coit, Kathleen Young, Bonnie Berger Dec 2007

Exercise Makes You Feel Good, But Does Feeling Good Make You Exercise?: An Examination Of Obese Dieters, Robert A. Carels, Carissa Coit, Kathleen Young, Bonnie Berger

Psychology Faculty Publications

Whereas exercise-induced mood enhancement has been well documented, the relationship between mood and exercise participation is less well understood. Mood states influence evaluative judgments that could plausibly influence a decision to exercise. Further, most exercise-mood research is limited to normal weight adults in response to a single exercise session. The current investigation examines the influence of (a) morning mood on exercise, (b) exercise intensity/duration on mood enhancement, and (c) daily change in mood on exercise days compared with nonexercise days in obese behavioral weight loss program (BWLP) participants. Participants (N=36) recorded morning, evening, and pre- and postexercise mood, as well …

Measuring The Impacts Of Employer-Based Transportation Demand Management Programs On An Interstate Corridor, Nevine Labib Georggi, Phil Winters, Sachin Rai, Liren Zhou Dec 2007

Measuring The Impacts Of Employer-Based Transportation Demand Management Programs On An Interstate Corridor, Nevine Labib Georggi, Phil Winters, Sachin Rai, Liren Zhou

Journal of Public Transportation

This article is based on a study that analyzed the impacts of employer-based transportation demand management (TDM) strategies and the performance of a transportation system. The study simulated the effects of the Washington State Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) programs implemented by 189 employers on an 8.6-mile segment of I-5 in the Seattle downtown area. This comprehensive dataset included before/after employer trip reduction plans and the origins/destinations of nearly 63,000 commuters working for those 189 employers. The current performance of the selected network was compared to that of a scenario with reduced vehicle trips due to CTR programs added back onto …

User Perceptions Of Private Paratransit Operation In Indonesia, Tri Basuki Joewono, Hisashi Kubota Dec 2007

User Perceptions Of Private Paratransit Operation In Indonesia, Tri Basuki Joewono, Hisashi Kubota

Journal of Public Transportation

In this article, public perception is expressed by user participation in rating the mode’s condition and loyalty to it. The aim of this research is to explore user perceptions of paratransit (i.e., jitney) operation, a privately owned and operated mode of transport, regarding quality of service, frequency of negative experience, and loyalty. This article examines the condition of paratransit from the user’s point of view to balance the judgment from other stakeholders. The findings from path analysis reveal the important determinants that influence overall satisfaction. Moreover, path analysis supports the hypothesis that this mode will still be relevant in the …

Casual Carpooling-Enhanced, Kalon L. Kelly Dec 2007

Casual Carpooling-Enhanced, Kalon L. Kelly

Journal of Public Transportation

Casual carpooling currently functions in environments where, because there is an HOV lane, riders and passengers join together to gain access to that lane. In this article, technology is introduced that will allow casual carpooling to function in areas without HOV lanes by providing an administrative system that records actual carpooling behavior so that incentives other than access to an HOV lane can be made available. This technology also addresses some of the current shortcomings associated with casual carpooling such as personal safety, the “free rider” problem, and the disincentive to maximize the number of passengers sharing a ride. The …

Guaranteed Ride Home Programs: A Study Of Program Characteristics, Utilization, And Cost, William B. Menczer Dec 2007

Guaranteed Ride Home Programs: A Study Of Program Characteristics, Utilization, And Cost, William B. Menczer

Journal of Public Transportation

Guaranteed ride home programs play an important role in increasing public transportation ridership by providing a good reason to separate commuters from their single occupancy vehicles. Since they are inexpensive insurance policies, these programs provide a cost-effective way for a commuter to leave work in the event of a personal or family emergency or unexpected overtime. Research results show that usage rates and costs are quite low. As a possible incentive for commuters to leave their cars at home, these findings may make these programs attractive to communities that want to reduce congestion by increasing public transportation use. The research …

Examining Incentives And Preferential Treatment Of Carpools On Managed Lane Facilities, David Ungemah, Ginger Goodin, Casey Dusza, Mark Burris Dec 2007

Examining Incentives And Preferential Treatment Of Carpools On Managed Lane Facilities, David Ungemah, Ginger Goodin, Casey Dusza, Mark Burris

Journal of Public Transportation

As managed lanes (ML) are considered throughout more than 25 North America cities, there is a need for guidance in defining the role of carpools in tolled ML and the trade-offs between carpool exemptions and other project objectives. Increasingly, project objectives are reflecting not only mobility concerns but the need to generate revenue as well. As a result, allowing exempt or discounted users, such as carpools on priced-ML requires an evaluation of revenue impacts as well as mobility interests such as person movements, operations, and emissions. This article highlights the existing body of knowledge regarding carpooling, facilities, and incentives designed …
