Adolescent Girls' Perception Of Residential Treatment Centers: A Qualitative Study Of How Treatment Works, Tyler Adam Money Dec 2007

Adolescent Girls' Perception Of Residential Treatment Centers: A Qualitative Study Of How Treatment Works, Tyler Adam Money

Theses and Dissertations

RTCs play an increasingly significant role in the continuum of treatment of emotionally disturbed adolescents. However, outcome research in this area has lagged behind the growth of treatment centers. More specifically, there has been very little investigation of the relative efficacy of the many different aspects of residential treatment, which are referred to as mechanisms of change in other research. The present study attempts to develop a phenomenological understanding of RTC patients' experience of all of the interventions that make up residential treatment. Results suggest that patients view social support, non-therapist staff members, family involvement and family therapy, as most …

The Changing Faces Of New Hampshire: Recent Demographic Trends In The Granite State, Kenneth M. Johnson Dec 2007

The Changing Faces Of New Hampshire: Recent Demographic Trends In The Granite State, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

New Hampshire, with a total population of 1.3 million, gained 79,000 residents between 2000 and 2006. Most of this growth (51,000 residents) came from migration. The migration also brought economic gains: New Hampshire gained at least $1.4 billion in income from migration between 2001 and 2005, and households moving in earned nearly $9,000 more than those leaving.

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

As the ear has dual functions for audition and balance, the eye has a dual role in detecting light for a wide range of behavioral and physiological functions separate from sight. These responses are driven primarily by stimulation of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) that are most sensitive to short-wavelength ( approximately 480 nm) blue light and remain functional in the absence of rods and cones. We examined the spectral sensitivity of non-image-forming responses in two profoundly blind subjects lacking functional rods and cones (one male, 56 yr old; one female, 87 yr old). In the male subject, we found …

Diphenhydramine-Dependence Resulting From Self-Medication Of Antipsychotic- Induced Extrapyramidal Symptoms, Faisal S. Shaikh M.B.B.S., Ann M. Mortimer M.D. Dec 2007

Diphenhydramine-Dependence Resulting From Self-Medication Of Antipsychotic- Induced Extrapyramidal Symptoms, Faisal S. Shaikh M.B.B.S., Ann M. Mortimer M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Antipsychotic-induced extrapyramidal symptoms should be recognised and adequately treated. We report an unusual complication of not doing so: a patient’s self-medicating to control these symptoms, which produced diphenhydramine-dependence.

Dissociative-Like Spells In A Child With Neurofibromatosis (Type 1), Gregory M. Singleton M.D. (Pgy2), Ann M. Lagges Ph.D., Karen G. Meighen M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Neurofibromatosis, type 1, (NF1) is a common neurocutaneous disorder of childhood. Little is known about the psychiatric aspects of the condition. We present the case of a 10-year-old male with NF1 and complex spells. For two years he had been experiencing self-limited paroxysms of auditory and visual hallucination, assaultiveness, excited undressing, and amnesia. The spells have been refractory to multiple treatments, including antipsychotic medication. The question remains whether this episodic amnestic disorder is comorbid with NF1 or is caused by it.

A Major Event Of Self-Mutilation In A Patient With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Joel P. Johnson M.D. (Pgy4), Steven Sugden M.D., James A. Bourgeois O.D., M.D. Dec 2007

A Major Event Of Self-Mutilation In A Patient With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Joel P. Johnson M.D. (Pgy4), Steven Sugden M.D., James A. Bourgeois O.D., M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

We describe a young adult male with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) who presented with a non-repetitive, major, genital self-mutilation necessitating urological intervention. On formal psychiatric evaluation, he did not have psychosis or suicidality. Most commonly, self-injury in developmental disability is less severe and more stereotypic; major-class self-mutilation is confined, generally, to psychosis. It is this discrepancy that is the unusual feature of our case.

Cognitive Functioning, Immune Functioning, And Disease Progression In Perinatally Infected Hiv+ School-Aged Children On Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy, Erin Theresa O'Callaghan Dec 2007

Cognitive Functioning, Immune Functioning, And Disease Progression In Perinatally Infected Hiv+ School-Aged Children On Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy, Erin Theresa O'Callaghan

Open Access Dissertations

This study is one of the only investigations to examine the complex inter-relationships between immune status, cognitive functioning, and disease progression in school-aged, perinatally infected, HIV+ children on HAART over time and is the first to conduct long-term follow-up assessments beyond one year after initiating HAART. Previous research has shown that HIV+ children on HAART show stability in cognitive functioning for up to one year. The current study investigated cognitive functioning, as measured by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children -III, as a function of immune functioning and disease progression over time in this sample. Overall, results showed that PIQ …

The Dose-Response Of Maternal Exercise Volume On Newborn And Placental Outcomes, Melisa A. Mena Dec 2007

The Dose-Response Of Maternal Exercise Volume On Newborn And Placental Outcomes, Melisa A. Mena

Open Access Dissertations

Current ACOG guidelines recommend exercise during a low-risk pregnancy for 30 minutes on most, if not all days of the week. However, little is known about how the volume of exercise performed during pregnancy affects fetoplacental size. In addition, the confounding effects of maternal nutrient intake and weight gain, and how they interact with exercise volume to influence fetoplacental size have not been appropriately addressed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of varying maternal exercise volumes on neonatal birthweight and placental volume, while addressing the influence of maternal nutrient intake and weight gain. Subjects evaluated …

Worldview Construction: International Relations Concepts Embedded In Elementary Social Studies Textbooks, Louise Massey Strauss Dec 2007

Worldview Construction: International Relations Concepts Embedded In Elementary Social Studies Textbooks, Louise Massey Strauss

Open Access Dissertations

Early civic education is crucial for worldview formation compatible with living in an increasingly interdependent world. In U.S. public schools, social studies is the locus of civic education. Social studies textbooks are the container of civic subject matter and teachers are its transmitters. Traditionally, civic education has been linked with national identity creation. In this study, educators are challenged to stimulate a complementary cosmopolitan identity because of social, political, and economic globalization trends and transition to an Information (and instant communication) Age. Using the social constructivist perspective, a content analysis model was developed for multi-state study of elementary social studies …

The Role Of Egyptian Film In Stereotyping Single Women, Heba Metwally Ibrahim Metwally Dec 2007

The Role Of Egyptian Film In Stereotyping Single Women, Heba Metwally Ibrahim Metwally

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Due to the increasing rates of single or still-unmarried women, also known as spinsters or Awanes, shaping the perceptions of these women is a problem facing Egyptian society. In this paper, the researcher assesses the effects of the media's depiction of these women, specifically focusing on the movie industry. By conducting a content analysis of Egyptian movies, as well as an examination of the notion of spinsters in language, history and culture, this study demonstrates the impact of movies in constructing a negative image and shaping the perception of unmarried women within Egyptian society. Through in-depth interviews, field observation in …

Louisiana Intech Professional Development: Middle School Administrators' Perceptions Of Change As Related To Student Achievement, Diane R. Mason Dec 2007

Louisiana Intech Professional Development: Middle School Administrators' Perceptions Of Change As Related To Student Achievement, Diane R. Mason

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

School accountability requires administrators and policymakers to implement sound programs that sustain school improvement. Hundreds of Louisiana teachers participate in Louisiana Integration of Technology (INTECH) professional development as a strategy to change instructional practice and improve student achievement. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to investigate the Louisiana INTECH professional development model as an impetus for school change and increased student achievement. The study employed a survey and an ex-post facto, causal-comparative design to address the questions: 1) Do middle school administrators perceive the Louisiana INTECH professional development model as an impetus for school change? 2) Does the …
