Particularisation Of Child Abuse Offences: Common Problems When Questioning Child Witnesses, Martine B. Powell, Kim P. Roberts, Belinda Guadagno
Particularisation Of Child Abuse Offences: Common Problems When Questioning Child Witnesses, Martine B. Powell, Kim P. Roberts, Belinda Guadagno
Psychology Faculty Publications
Prosecuting child abusers is often difficult due to lack of particularising details. Two possible ways of addressing this difficulty are: (a) to change the justice system to better serve prosecution for repeated offences (i.e., allow generic testimony), and (b) to bolster children's testimony. As this article has illustrated, there is still considerable potential for increasing (b). Given the low prosecution rates of child abuse offences, the need for exceptional interviewer training programs coupled with resources for ongoing supervision is now critical. While there have been some major improvements in child witness investigative interviews over the past two decades, there are …
Pearl Harbor In Reverse: Moral Analogies In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Dominic Tierney
Pearl Harbor In Reverse: Moral Analogies In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Dominic Tierney
Political Science Faculty Works
During the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, the argument that U.S. air strikes against Soviet missile sites in Cuba would be morally analogous to the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 had a major impact on policymaking. The invocation of this analogy contributed to President John F. Kennedy's decision to forgo an immediate attack on the missiles and to start instead with a naval blockade of the island. The "Pearl Harbor in reverse" argument is an example of an important phenomenon that has received little attention in foreign policy analysis—the moral analogy. Fusing together elements of moral and analogical …

Development And Analysis Of An Internet Browsing Utilizing The Overscan Technique For Persons With Physical Disabilities, Patrick Paul Clerkin
Development And Analysis Of An Internet Browsing Utilizing The Overscan Technique For Persons With Physical Disabilities, Patrick Paul Clerkin
Doctoral Dissertations
Persons with a severe disability often use scanning as an indirect selection technique for operating augmentative and alternative communication aids and computer access. For information that can be organized in advance, including lists of communication elements such as words and phrases, users often employ rate enhancing scanning methods like the row-column scanning technique. However, row-column scanning requires selection elements to be grouped into defined rows and columns, and therefore does not work well with Internet browsing due to the non-grouped layout of HTML pages.
This work attempts to develop an improved scanning technique for Internet browsing by designing interfaces to …

Effective Leadership Through Emotional Maturity, Linda Hyatt, Blaine Hyatt, James Hyatt
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
What makes a leader successful? This question has been asked throughout the ages; before one attempt to understand what makes a leader successful, one must first have a full comprehension of what constitutes success and what constitutes a leader. To merely hold the position of a leader does not make one a leader. Success is largely an individualistic interpretation of personal increase or satisfaction, whether physical, emotional, or psychological. One’s perception of success is influenced by the social contexts around the individual. A successful leader must possess certain characteristics and have the ability to transform those characteristics into action. A …
Teacher Migration From High-Performing Middle Schools: A Case Study, Richard Conley
Teacher Migration From High-Performing Middle Schools: A Case Study, Richard Conley
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
I recently conducted fieldwork to explore the dynamics of teacher migration and understand how it relates to teachers’ perceptions and attitudes. The research was conducted through the eyes of a sixth grade language arts/social studies’ teacher working in a middle school I will refer to as PLC (Professional Learning Community) Middle School. By spending extensive time and conducting multiple interviews with the teacher and other staff members, I was able to explore some of the reasons and conditions why teachers leave schools, particularly high-performing schools to teach in other high performing schools. Attending weekly meetings at all levels and content …

Telling Stories And Living Art: Making Room For Social Justice And Diversity In Graduate Education, Four Arrows
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Indigenous scholars discovered that indigenous knowledge is far more than the binary opposite of western knowledge. As a concept, indigenous knowledge benchmarks the limitations of Eurocentric theory — its methodology, evidence, and conclusions — reconceptualizes the resilience and self-reliance of indigenous peoples, and underscores the importance of their own philosophies, heritages, and educational processes. Indigenous knowledge fills the ethical and knowledge gaps in Eurocentric education, research, and scholarship (2002:5).
Using Cooperative Learning To Promote A Problem-Solving Classroom, Amy Nebesniak
Using Cooperative Learning To Promote A Problem-Solving Classroom, Amy Nebesniak
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Master of Arts in Teaching, Summative Projects
In this action research study of my eighth grade mathematics classroom, I investigate the benefits of cooperative learning, the support structures needed to promote a cooperative learning environment, and students’ ability to transfer the cooperative learning skills into less structured problem solving situations. The data analysis reveals that cooperative learning increases students’ confidence level as well as their involvement in the learning process. In order to create successful teams, students require my providing support structures and modifying the support for each group of students. Finally, students are able to more effectively apply their cooperative skills in concrete situations as compared …

A Study Of The Role Of Mnemonics In Learning Mathematics, Kathy Delashmutt
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Master of Arts in Teaching, Summative Projects
In this action research study of my fifth grade mathematics teaching, I investigated student engagement levels in the classroom, with a specific interest in the importance and effectiveness of mnemonics in learning mathematics for all learners. I defined mnemonic instruction as a strategy that provides a visual or verbal prompt for students who may have difficulty retaining information. It is a memory enhancing instructional strategy that involved teaching students to link new information that is taught to information they already know. I investigated mnemonics effectiveness in my classroom by using two student interviews, a teacher survey, two student surveys and …
Understanding The Mathematical Language, Carmen Melliger
Understanding The Mathematical Language, Carmen Melliger
Action Research Projects
In this action research study of my calculus classroom consisting of only 12th grade students, I investigated activities that would affect a student’s understanding of mathematical language. The goal in examining these activities in a systematic way was to see if a student’s deeper understanding of math terms and symbols resulted in a better understanding of the mathematical concepts being taught. I discovered that some students will rise to the challenge of understanding mathematics more deeply, and some will not. In the process of expecting more from students, the frustration level of both the students and the teacher increased. As …
Cooperative Learning As An Effective Way To Interact, Gary Eisenhauer
Cooperative Learning As An Effective Way To Interact, Gary Eisenhauer
Action Research Projects
In this action research study of my classroom of 8th grade mathematics, I investigated the effects of students’ interactions while cooperatively learning in groups. I discovered that in order to be cooperative, a lesson must be well-defined, open for discussion, and have positive face-toface interaction. The cooperative learning groups should be teacher generated rather than student-selected. When done correctly, cooperative learning tends to promote student relationships, more positive attitudes toward mathematics and the teacher, and greater self-confidence in a student’s mathematics abilities. As a result of this research, I plan to better incorporate cooperative learning into the classroom. Students will …

The Casual Link Between Stock Returns And Trading Volume: Some Evidence From An Emerging Market, Abdul Rashid
The Casual Link Between Stock Returns And Trading Volume: Some Evidence From An Emerging Market, Abdul Rashid
Business Review
This paper investigates the dynamic association between daily stock index returns and percentage trading volume changes. To proceed with this, linear and nonlinear Granger causality tests are applied to the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) data. The analysis covers the span of about 5 years with 1266 daily observations. The same methodology is employed for two non-overlapping sub-periods to examine the robustness of the results. Unidirectional linear Granger causality from stock returns to trading volume is observed for the entire sample period and for both the sub-periods as well. The null hypothesis of linear Granger noncausality from percentage volume changes to …

The Effects Of Foreign Accent And Language On Reaction Time And Accuracy In An Air Traffic Control Task, Rosabelle Suarez
The Effects Of Foreign Accent And Language On Reaction Time And Accuracy In An Air Traffic Control Task, Rosabelle Suarez
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The present study examines the effect of foreign accent interference with the ability to execute commands presented in speech format. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that a foreign accent influences performance. Participants were between 18 and 40 years of age. Half of the participants were native speakers of Spanish who began learning English as a second language via the classroom setting. The other half were native English-speaking with little or no exposure to the Spanish language. The experimental design was similar to an aviation scenario where participants listened to simulated ATC procedural commands and execute them on …

Both in Arizona and in other jurisdictions, both in longstanding and newly implemented programs, both currently and more than a decade ago, court-connected arbitration does not appear to reduce, but also does not substantially improve, the effectiveness and efficiency of dispute resolution. It does, however, seem to increase litigants' access to a hearing. How aspects of program structure could enhance arbitration's performance warrants further study.

Infertility And Life Satisfaction Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Roselie Torres Stone, Arthur L. Greil
Infertility And Life Satisfaction Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Roselie Torres Stone, Arthur L. Greil
Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications
Using data from a random sample of 580 midwestern women, the authors explore the association between lifetime infertility and life satisfaction. Past research shows lower life satisfaction among those seeking help for infertility. The authors find no direct effects of lifetime infertility, regardless of perception of a problem, on life satisfaction; however, there are several conditional effects. Among women who have ever met the criteria for infertility and perceive a fertility problem, life satisfaction is significantly lower for non-mothers and those with higher internal medical locus of control, and the association is weaker for employed women. For women with infertility …

Developing On-Line Collaborative Research Across International Boundaries: Exploring The Potential Of New Technologies, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky
Developing On-Line Collaborative Research Across International Boundaries: Exploring The Potential Of New Technologies, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The development of on-line research practice across international boundaries is now a viable proposition using available asynchronous technologies such as computer conferencing. As has been reported in previous papers (Grodzinsky, et al, 2002; Griffin, et al, 2002) such use has proved to be extremely valuable for supporting the teaching of computing and ethics. However, asynchronous computer conferencing not only offers new opportunities for teaching and for supporting students, it also offers a valuable resource to researchers. Taking advantage of such opportunity must, of course, address a number of issues. Prime amongst these are concerns as to how to overcome the …
Value Drivers In Business Course Design: A Student Stakeholder Perspective, John Knight, Daniel Tracy
Value Drivers In Business Course Design: A Student Stakeholder Perspective, John Knight, Daniel Tracy
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
As one of the important stakeholders in the academic process, students and their preferences should be considered when the instructor selects the various course design features. Although students are not the only stakeholders in the academic process, their receptiveness to classroom instruction is clearly a central focus of that process. This paper examines a large sample of business student data on their preferences with respect to fourteen controllable course design features. The preferences are examined in light of their relative ranked importance and relative intensity. Additionally, the data is examined in light of potential differences in student preferences relative to …

Portfolio Assignments In Teacher Education: A Tool For Self-Regulating The Learning Process?, Jetske Strijbos, Wil Meeus, Arno Libotton
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This study examines the effects of a portfolio programme on self-regulation – and thus among third year students of teacher education training to be secondary school teachers. Data collection was by means of self-reporting before, during and after the portfolio programme and via perception questionnaires. The study indicates a significant increase in self-regulation. The portfolio programme therefore improves students’ capacity to go through their learning process independently, although the analysis also shows that the rising score with respect to the construct ‘self-regulation’ stems from the increase of only one sub-scale (regulation). The comparison of the students’ own opinions with those …

Using Autoethnography In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Reflective Practice From ‘The Other Side Of The Mirror', Fernanda P. Duarte
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Borrowing concepts from autoethnography – a writing genre in which the researcher ‘becomes’ the phenomenon under investigation – this essay is based on my reflections and recollections of important events and insights that occurred during my participation in a professional development project. This experience has significantly altered my outlook on teaching and learning, as it forced me to reflect more critically on why I teach the way I do, and look at my pedagogical practices anew. The first part provides a brief introduction of autoethnography as a reflexive writing genre; the second part presents the broad narrative – that of …

The purpose of this essay is to provide a broad review of topics relevant to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Sources from the international community have been utilized to provide summaries on the issues of assessment of student learning, accountability concerns, learning expectations, student motivation, and approaches to learning. Multiple theories of learning are discussed in relation to memory, cognition, constructionist viewpoint, self-defined reality, schemas, the mindful engagement of student learners, and the interplay of the learning environment and individual student characteristics. Each micro summary can be a potential building point for those new to SoTL as well …
