Self-Efficacy And Health Value Among Undergraduates Following A Lifetime Fitness Course, Heather M. Brown Aug 2007

Self-Efficacy And Health Value Among Undergraduates Following A Lifetime Fitness Course, Heather M. Brown

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The question of whether perceived self-efficacy for exercise and health value, respectively, varied as a function of gender and exercise stage of change was the focus of this study. An archival data set was used. Participants were 190 college students who completed a demographic questionnaire, the Exercise Stage of Change Questionnaire, the Rokeach Values Survey, and the Self-Efficacy for Exercise questionnaire before and after completing a lifetime fitness course. Two 2-factor analyses of covariance were conducted for each dependent variable, self-efficacy and health value. Gender and exercise stage of change were the independent variables. Exercise stage of change was divided …

Chinese Family Strengths And Resiliency, Anqi Xu, Xiaolin Xie, Wenli Liu, Yan Ruth Xia, Dalin Liu Aug 2007

Chinese Family Strengths And Resiliency, Anqi Xu, Xiaolin Xie, Wenli Liu, Yan Ruth Xia, Dalin Liu

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Chinese family and marriage strengths and challenges are delineated in this article, including equity in marriage, affection, the ability to adapt to changes, mutual trust, compatibility, harmony, and family support. Despite the fact that Chinese households are getting smaller as a result of governmental policy and the broadening of housing markets, families remain crucial support networks, especially in the areas of socialization and intergenerational relationships. Current research on Chinese marriages and families is cited, outlining attitudinal changes regarding mate selection, divorce, and childbirth between genders, between older and younger generations, and between urban and rural residents.

Impacts Of Parents’ Divorce On Chinese Children: A Model With Academic Performance As A Mediator, Anqi Xu, Jiehai Zhang, Yan Ruth Xia Aug 2007

Impacts Of Parents’ Divorce On Chinese Children: A Model With Academic Performance As A Mediator, Anqi Xu, Jiehai Zhang, Yan Ruth Xia

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The study examined the impact of parents’ divorce on Chinese children’s well-being. A Chinese theoretical model was tested using Structural Equation Modeling. The sample consisted of 940 Chinese children aged 6-16. The well-being of children from divorced families was compared with that of two-parent and widowed families. The results showed that children’s academic performance mediated the negative impact of divorce on children’s well-being. The societal discriminating attitude towards divorce and single-parent families had a strong negative effect on the children’s well-being. Parenting skills of the custodial parent had more influence on the children’s well-being than the marital conflicts prior to …

Shrinking Inpatient Psychiatric Capacity: Cause For Celebration Or Concern?, Eileen Salinsky, Christopher Loftis Aug 2007

Shrinking Inpatient Psychiatric Capacity: Cause For Celebration Or Concern?, Eileen Salinsky, Christopher Loftis

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief examines reported capacity constraints in inpatient psychiatric services and describes how these services fit within the continuum of care for mental health treatment. The paper summarizes the type and range of acute care services used to intervene in mental health crises, including both traditional hospital-based services and alternative crisis interventions, such as mobile response teams. It reviews historical trends in the supply of inpatient psychiatric beds and explores the anticipated influence of prospective payment for inpatient psychiatric services under Medicare. The paper also considers other forces that may affect the need for and supply of acute mental …

A Decision To Serve: Decision Making Through Service Learning, Elizabeth A. Romey Aug 2007

A Decision To Serve: Decision Making Through Service Learning, Elizabeth A. Romey

Perspectives In Learning

The use of service learning and community service with students at all levels of ability is becoming increasingly prevalent, especially with gifted students, because of their need to prepare for college applications. These applications often require a range of activities including community service as well as straight academic success. However, the distinction between community service, a reactive activity, and service learning, a proactive process in which students take leadership roles in their community, is not always emphasized. The role of structured decision-making processes, like those in Talents Unlimited and Future Problem Solving, to enable gifted students to take proactive leadership …

An Ethical Analysis Of The 3 Rs, Lisa Houde, Claude Dumas Aug 2007

An Ethical Analysis Of The 3 Rs, Lisa Houde, Claude Dumas

Between the Species

Even though the 3Rs (i.e., Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) are widely accepted as ethical standards when evaluating research projects using animals as experimental subjects, the ethical status of the 3Rs still remains to be clarified. The 3Rs were not derived from any ethical theory, but they represented an attempt to increase humanity to animal experimentation and at the same time to improve validity of scientific data (Russell & Burch, 1959). The aim of the present article was to provide an ethical analysis of the 3Rs through Engelhardt's bioethics theory (1998). The analysis revealed the 3Rs fitted to some extent Engelhardt ethical …

Mind-Matter For Animals Matters: Science And The Denial Of Animal Consciousness, Estiva Reus, David Olivier Aug 2007

Mind-Matter For Animals Matters: Science And The Denial Of Animal Consciousness, Estiva Reus, David Olivier

Between the Species

Animal people are usually confident that Cartesianism is something of the past and that modern science clearly establishes that animals are sentient beings. But actually the scientific status of sentience is anything but firmly established. Not only is the subjective point of view absent from current science; it is precluded by construction from our fundamental realms of knowledge. Physics — the mother-science once we reject Cartesian dualism — is currently unable to include sentience in its account of the world. A large part of the philosophy of mind describes a mindless mind, from which subjectivity — feeling, qualia — has …

A Problem Of Social Capital And Cultural Norms?, Salaam Yitbarek Aug 2007

A Problem Of Social Capital And Cultural Norms?, Salaam Yitbarek

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper asserts that in Ethiopian society, there exist certain cultural norms or ‘dysfunctional behaviours’ that inhibit effective communication, lead to intra-group conflict, and make conflict resolution difficult. This has resulted in a diminished capacity for cooperation and a dearth of social capital and civil society, which does not bode well for development and democracy. It is imperative that research is expanded in the neglected area of cultural norms and social capital in Ethiopian society, and that intervention strategies are designed to increase social capital by addressing cultural norms directly through social marketing, awareness raising, and other mechanisms.

What Role Should Civil Society Organizations Play To Address Ethnic Conflicts In Ethiopia?, Sisay Gebre-Egziabher Aug 2007

What Role Should Civil Society Organizations Play To Address Ethnic Conflicts In Ethiopia?, Sisay Gebre-Egziabher

International Conference on African Development Archives

The Ethiopian people are ethnically heterogeneous, speaking multiplicity languages comprising of more than 100 groups. Hence, the country presents a mosaic of nationalities, each speaking a dialect of one of more than 70 languages and has a long history of rich culture and strong social values. Although there were some ethnic-conflicts, that go back a long way, among few of the ethnic groups (mainly for control over resources, such as grazing land, water points, cultivable land), people solved such conflicts using their own conflict resolution mechanism; for instance elders meeting and community tribunal system. The indigenous civil society groups have …

Creating Conflict: Antecedents Of Workplace Incivility, Megan Preston Aug 2007

Creating Conflict: Antecedents Of Workplace Incivility, Megan Preston

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Incivility is defined as rude and discourteous behavior or displaying a lack of regard for others. As indicated by prior research (e.g., Pearson, Andersson, & Porath. 2000), the frequency and conscquences of uncivil behavior may result in a decline in psychological well-being, reduced job satisfaction, decreased organizational commitment, and increased turnover. However, much of the research to date has examined the relationship between personally experienced incivility and an assortment of job outcomes (Andersson & Pearson, 1999; Cortina et al., 2001; Pearson et al., 2000). The current study is distinct in that it addressed some of the potential factors that are …

Detecting Malingering On The Mmpi-2: An Examination Of The Utility Of Combining The Validity Scales In A Non-Compensatory Model, Thomas James Burke Aug 2007

Detecting Malingering On The Mmpi-2: An Examination Of The Utility Of Combining The Validity Scales In A Non-Compensatory Model, Thomas James Burke

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The MMPI-2 is the most commonly used self-report measure for the assessment of psychopathology in forensic and psychiatric disability assessments (Bacchiochi & Bagby, 2006; Bagby, Marshall, & Bacchiochi, 2005). The MMPI-2 includes a variety of validity scales designed to detect content responsive faking (e.g., faking good or faking bad) as well as content nonresponsivity (randomly responding). The present study was conducted to determine whether a combination of validity scales to detect malingering of a psychotic disorder in a non-compensatory model would be more or less effective than using only a select few of the validity scales in a compensatory model. …

Cognitive Retention Of Generation Y Students Through The Use Of Games And Simulations, Melanie A. Hicks Aug 2007

Cognitive Retention Of Generation Y Students Through The Use Of Games And Simulations, Melanie A. Hicks

Faculty Dissertations

A new generation of students has begun to proliferate colleges and universities. Unlike previous generations, Generation Y students have been exposed to a variety of technological advancements, have different behaviors towards learning, and have been raised in a different environment. These differences may be causing conflict with traditional pedagogy in educational institutions, thereby creating, while it may be unintentional, an inability for Generation Y students to learn under the standard educational method of lecture presented to previous generations. The literature supports the position that additional teaching methods are needed in order to effectively educate Generation Y students (Prensky, 2001; Brozik …

A Construct Validity Analysis Of A Leadership Assessment Center, Ross Love Aug 2007

A Construct Validity Analysis Of A Leadership Assessment Center, Ross Love

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study was designed to assess the construct validity of a leadership assessment center. Participants were evaluated in a leadership assessment center and completed a 360 degree feedback tool designed to measure leadership. Convergent and discriminant validity coefficients were calculated between assessment center ratings and the 360 degree feedback ratings of four different leadership competencies. Results showed little support for the construct validity of the assessment center. Additionally, results replicated prior research regarding the construct validity of assessment centers, with high correlations among different competencies within exercises and low correlations between competencies measured via different methods (assessment center-360 degree feedback …

Examining The Relationship Between Family Leisure And Physical Activity In Seventh And Eighth Grade Students, Trinity Edwards Aug 2007

Examining The Relationship Between Family Leisure And Physical Activity In Seventh And Eighth Grade Students, Trinity Edwards

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examined the relationship between family leisure and physical activity in seventh and eighth grade students. The sample was self-selected from a population of students from a Midwest junior high school (N=526). Data were collected through a survey instrument sent home with students via their homeroom teacher. The instrument was accompanied by: (a) minor assent form, (b) parental informed consent form, and (c) survey instrument for the parent respondents including relevant demographic questions. The survey instrument comprised the Family Leisure Activity Profile (Zabriskie, 2000), Satisfaction with Family Life Scale, and six physical activity questions. The physical activity questions were …
