Positive Organizational Behavior In The Workplace: The Impact Of Hope, Optimism, And Resilience, Carolyn M. Youssef, Fred Luthans Oct 2007

Positive Organizational Behavior In The Workplace: The Impact Of Hope, Optimism, And Resilience, Carolyn M. Youssef, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Drawing from the foundation of positive psychology and the recently emerging positive organizational behavior, two studies (N = 1,032 and N = 232) test hypotheses on the impact that the selected positive psychological resource capacities of hope, optimism, and resilience have on desired work-related employee outcomes. These outcomes include performance (self-reported in Study 1 and organizational performance appraisals in Study 2), job satisfaction, work happiness, and organizational commitment. The findings generally support that employees’ positive psychological resource capacities relate to, and contribute unique variance to, the outcomes. However, hope, and, to a lesser extent, optimism and resilience, do differentially contribute …

Reading The Pink Locker Room: On Football Culture And Title Ix, Erin E. Buzuvis Oct 2007

Reading The Pink Locker Room: On Football Culture And Title Ix, Erin E. Buzuvis

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This article examines the public controversy that erupted after local media reported on a comment I made about the University of Iowa's decision to renovate the football stadium's visiting team locker room entirely in pink. I submitted my statement in response to the University Steering Committee on NCAA Certification's request for feedback on a draft report and suggested that the "joke" behind the pink d6cor traded in sexist and homophobic values. As such, I concluded that it belonged in the comprehensive analysis of gender equity that the committee was preparing. I immediately received hundreds of hateful e-mails and was the …

Who Is To Shame? Narratives Of Neonaticide, Susan Ayres Oct 2007

Who Is To Shame? Narratives Of Neonaticide, Susan Ayres

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In seventeenth-century England, single women who killed their newborns were believed to have acted to hide their shame. They were prosecuted under the 1624 Concealment Law and punished by death. This harsh response eventually evolved into a more humane and sympathetic one, as shown by the increasing number of acquittals in the late eighteenth century and by the sharp drop of prosecutions in the late nineteenth century. Then, in 1922, England passed the Infanticide Act, amended in 1938, which provided that a mother who killed her child would be prosecuted for manslaughter, not murder. Today, the great majority of women …

The Effectiveness Of Prophylactic Eye Drops On The Reversal Of Uv-Light Induced Cataracts, Contessa Bly Bowman Oct 2007

The Effectiveness Of Prophylactic Eye Drops On The Reversal Of Uv-Light Induced Cataracts, Contessa Bly Bowman

Theses and Dissertations

Cataracts are a cloudiness of the lens within the eye which obstructs vision. They are found in many species including rats, dogs, and humans. Vision is hindered where this "cloudiness", made of water build up and broken crystalline, proteins take form. Oculvet is an eye medication, used by veterinarians, containing carnosine as its active ingredient. Topical application of carnosine is reported to be an effective treatment for the prevention and removal of pre-existing cataracts. For this experiment, Sprague- Dawley rats were anesthetized and exposed to ultraviolet radiation, UVB and UVC. They were divided into four groups (n = 32), three …

An Examination Of The Reliabilities Of Two Choral Festival Adjudication Forms, Charles E. Norris, James D. Borst Oct 2007

An Examination Of The Reliabilities Of Two Choral Festival Adjudication Forms, Charles E. Norris, James D. Borst

Peer Reviewed Articles

The purpose of this study was to compare the reliability of a common school choral festival adjudication form with that of a second form that is a more descriptive extension of the first. Specific research questions compare the interrater reliabilities of each form, the differences in mean scores of all dimensions between the forms, and the concurrent validity of the forms. Analysis of correlations between all possible pairs of four judges determined that the interrater reliability of the second form was stronger than that of the traditional form. Moderate correlations between the two forms further support the notion that the …

Acculturation, Gender, And Alcohol Use Among Mexican American College Students, Marcela Raffaelli, Rosalie A. Torres Stone, Maria I. Iturbide, Meredith Mcginley, Gustavo Carlo, Lisa J. Crockett Oct 2007

Acculturation, Gender, And Alcohol Use Among Mexican American College Students, Marcela Raffaelli, Rosalie A. Torres Stone, Maria I. Iturbide, Meredith Mcginley, Gustavo Carlo, Lisa J. Crockett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Prior research with non-college samples of Mexican Americans has demonstrated that gender moderates the association between acculturation and alcohol use. We replicated this finding in a college student sample and attempted to account for the differential impact of acculturation on Mexican American men and women by examining the mediating effects of social context, family conflict and psychological functioning. Participants were 148 Mexican Americans (67% female; M age 23 years) from three state universities in California and Texas who completed self-report surveys. In multivariate analyses controlling for age, maternal education, living situation, and site, linguistic acculturation was associated with increased alcohol …

Camp Counseling And The Development And Transfer Of Workforce Skills: The Perspective Of Ohio 4-H Camp Counselor Alumni, Janel K. Digby, Theresa M. Ferrari Oct 2007

Camp Counseling And The Development And Transfer Of Workforce Skills: The Perspective Of Ohio 4-H Camp Counselor Alumni, Janel K. Digby, Theresa M. Ferrari

Journal of Youth Development

Recent research shows that camp counselors, including those in 4-H, benefit from the experience by developing important life skills. However, because research regarding the perception of workforce skill development in this context has yielded inconsistent findings, the present study used focus groups to examine 4-H camp counselor alumni perceptions about the skills gained and transfer of these skills to other settings. Overall, 4-H camp counselor alumni thought their experience was fun and enjoyable, yet challenging. They believed they developed important life and workforce skills. Not only did alumni learn these skills, but the skills transferred beyond the camp setting. Leadership …

Unproductive Bodies: A Materialist Critique Of The "Corporeal Turn", Paula Cerni Oct 2007

Unproductive Bodies: A Materialist Critique Of The "Corporeal Turn", Paula Cerni

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Contemporary theory tends to neglect the human body's role in the production of material objects. This neglect is most glaring in constructionist approaches, whose post-structuralist view of the social as discursive practice necessarily downgrades the practical relations between humans and their physical environment. Arthur Frank, for example, formulates a typology - partly derived from Bryan Turner's theory of 'bodily order' - according to which the body acts in four ways: as a disciplined, dominating, mirroring and communicative body (Frank, 1991; Turner, 1984). None of these four modes of action involve the body acting practically on the wider material …

Graphic Travelogues And The Revival Of A 'Rotting Form': Peter Carey's Wrong About Japan And Guy Delisle’S Pyongyang: A Journey In North Korea, Gene Mcquillan

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

One need not be a malicious critic to be curious about an insulting review. One day while browsing on-line for new travel books, I came across the following statement by Ian Sansom:

In his remarkable book The Art of Travel (1855) Charles Darwin's cousin Francis Galton noted that "In Napoleon's retreat, after his campaign in Russia, many a soldier saved or prolonged his life by creeping within the warm and reeking carcase of a horse that had died by the way." These days, Peter Carey does much the same with travel writing, snuggling up inside a rotting form …
