The Multifaceted Nature Of Impulsive Sensation-Seeking: Differential Relationships With Personality, Deviance, And Laboratory Tasks, Drew J. Miller
The Multifaceted Nature Of Impulsive Sensation-Seeking: Differential Relationships With Personality, Deviance, And Laboratory Tasks, Drew J. Miller
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The current study examined divergences among impulsivity and sensation seeking items from the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire Impulsive Sensation Seeking scale in terms of their relations to other personality models, deviance, and laboratory task outcomes. A sample of 654 undergraduates was gathered across two studies and given a Five Factor Model of personality measure (e.g. NEO Five Factor Inventory, NEO Five Factor Report Form), deviance measures (e.g. Antisocial Behavior Inventory, Explicit Attitudes Towards Marijuana Questionnaire), and three laboratory tasks (e.g. Balloon Analogue Risk Task, Newmans Card-Playing Task). Results demonstrated the hypothesized divergences among impulsivity and sensation seeking items on measures of …
The Infinite As Originative Of The Human As Human: A Transcendental Phenomenological Explication Of The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Levinas, Ronald Lynn Mercer, Jr.
The Infinite As Originative Of The Human As Human: A Transcendental Phenomenological Explication Of The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Levinas, Ronald Lynn Mercer, Jr.
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Few philosophers, today, are doing more than simple recognition of Levinass debt to phenomenology when a thorough explication of how phenomenological methodology impacts Levinass work is needed. This dissertation is the needed discussion of methodology that has been so absent in Levinas as well as in so many of his interpreters. The purpose, herein, is to synthesize Levinass work, explicating it in terms of transcendental methodology, the result of which reveals Levinass claims to be more defensible when understood in these terms than when the full rigor of this methodology is not properly grasped. First, to connect Levinas to transcendental …

Hebi Sani: Mental Well Being Among The Working Class Afro-Surinamese In Paramaribo, Suriname, Aminata Cairo
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes the results of a two year anthropological investigation into the concept of mental well being among the working class Afro-Surinamese population in Paramaribo, Suriname. More specifically, the research investigated how working class Afro-Surinamese in Paramaribo, Suriname define and maintain their sense of mental well-being, given their unique ethnic identity within a multi-ethnic and multicultural society, and given that their environment is heavily compromised by negative globalizing forces Over the course of two years a total of 62 people contributed information through group and individual interviews, which was supplemented by information obtained through participant observation. Findings show a …
Mentoring Matters: The Influence Of Social Support And Relational Maintenance Strategies On Critical Outcomes In Doctoral Education, Sarah Elizabeth Cavendish
Mentoring Matters: The Influence Of Social Support And Relational Maintenance Strategies On Critical Outcomes In Doctoral Education, Sarah Elizabeth Cavendish
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Utilizing social support as the theoretical foundation for this research, the study proposes and tests the Mentoring Relational Process Model (MRPM). The influence of support sought, relational maintenance strategies, and support obtained on the critical graduate outcomes of relational satisfaction, research self-efficacy, perceived time-todegree, and relational quality is examined. Data collected from 310 doctoral students through an online survey is used to test the MRPM. Over 50% of the variance in relational satisfaction and relational quality, respectively, is predicted by the MRPM. Research selfefficacy and perceived time-to-degree were not well-predicted by the current data.
University Student Preferences For Therapist Variables Influenced By Student Demographics And Prior Counseling Experiences, Jennifer Ann Weber
University Student Preferences For Therapist Variables Influenced By Student Demographics And Prior Counseling Experiences, Jennifer Ann Weber
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Research on psychotherapy has consistently revealed that a portion of the variance in positive outcomes can be explained by therapist variables. Examination of clients preferences for certain therapist characteristics has led to inconsistent results further complicated by differences in participant characteristics. This study on therapist characteristics examines relationships between student-preferred therapist characteristics and demographic information provided by participants in their survey responses. Therapist characteristics under investigation include counseling style and approach to treatment, level of experience and training, and demographic information. This study also validates an online survey as a quality method of investigating university students preferences for therapist characteristics …
Projecting The Results Of State Smoking Ban Initiatives Using Cartographic Analysis, Donna Arlene Gilbreath
Projecting The Results Of State Smoking Ban Initiatives Using Cartographic Analysis, Donna Arlene Gilbreath
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Because tobacco smoking causes 430,000 U.S. deaths annually, wide-reaching smoking bans are needed. Bans reduce cigarette consumption, encourage cessation, protect nonsmokers from second-hand smoke, and promote an attitude that smoking is undesirable. Therefore, bans may prevent future generations from suffering many smoking-related health problems. The federal government has not implemented widereaching smoking bans so it falls on individual states, counties, or communities to devise appropriate smoking policy. To date, smoking policy has been determined by legislators, who may have conflicts that prevent them from acting in the publics best interest. However, this method of implementing smoking policy may be changing. …

A Controlled Comparison Of Emotional Reactivity And Physiological Response In Chronic Orofacial Pain Patients, John E. Schmidt
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the emotional and physiological differences between masticatory muscle pain patients and age, height, and weight matched pain-free controls. Physiological activation and emotional reactivity were assessed in the 22 muscle pain patients and 23 pain-free controls during a baseline rest period, while discussing a personally relevant stressor, and during a post-stressor recovery period. Physiological activity was assessed through the use of the frequency domain heart rate variability indices. Activity in the high frequency heart rate variability range is an index of parasympathetic activity while activity in the low frequency heart rate variability range is an index of both …

Religiousness And Alcohol Use: Exploring The Role Of Descriptive Drinking Norms, Emily H. Brechting
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Alcohol use in young adults requires continued attention due to the significant number of problems related to alcohol consumption. The alcohol use literature has explored a variety of constructs related to alcohol use in young adults including religiousness. The aims of the current study were to demonstrate the relationships between religiousness and alcohol use, explore the associations between religiousness and descriptive drinking norms, replicate the relationships between drinking norms and alcohol outcomes, and explore the mediating role of descriptive drinking norms on the relationships between religiousness and alcohol outcomes. Three hundred and thirtythree undergraduate students (M=19.72 years old; SD=1.1) completed …
Instructional Communication Matters: A Test Of Knowledge Acqusition Theory (Kat) From A Message-Oriented Receiver Perspective, Robert Joseph Trader
Instructional Communication Matters: A Test Of Knowledge Acqusition Theory (Kat) From A Message-Oriented Receiver Perspective, Robert Joseph Trader
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation encourages adoption of a message-oriented receiver perspective when developing new instructional communication theories and proposes a causal-process model derived from Knowledge Acquisition Theory to demonstrate how this perspective can be used to predict student cognitive learning outcomes. Three hypotheses are generated to test the propositions of the derived model. The first hypothesis seeks to determine which dimensions of instructional message clarity and course content relevance best predict student interactions with instructional content. The second hypothesis predicts that student self-reported knowledge gains are a function of student interactions with content. The third hypothesis predicts that a significant proportion of …
Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak
Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This ethnographic dissertation research project examines HIV prevention programs in Warsaw, Poland to explore the concurrent processes of democratization and privatization as Poland begins European Union accession. As inherently political public health interventions, HIV prevention programs provoke discussions of risk and responsibility, and visions of the moral social order. Therefore, they can be used to understand the ways in which politically and socially marginalized populations invoke claims to citizenship status through attention to health issues. From an epidemiological perspective, HIV/AIDS arrived in Poland relatively late (1985) and never reached the anticipated epidemic levels. In the 1980s, drawing attention to the …
The Contextual Elements Of Political Tolerance: A Multilevel Analysis Of The Effects Of Threat Environment And Domestic Institutions On Political Tolerance Levels, Marc Lawrence Hutchison
The Contextual Elements Of Political Tolerance: A Multilevel Analysis Of The Effects Of Threat Environment And Domestic Institutions On Political Tolerance Levels, Marc Lawrence Hutchison
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Although largely overlooked in much of the previous research on political tolerance, I argue that contextual factors, specifically state-level features, play a significant role in influencing individual tolerance judgments. Drawing from extant theories of public opinion, international conflict, and political institutions, I seek to further our understanding of the determinants of political tolerance by trying to answer the following question: What accounts for the significant differences in political tolerance levels across countries? While models using individual-level predictors account for some of the disparity in tolerance levels, a substantial amount remains unexplained. I assert that several macro-level theoretical frameworks offer compelling …
Virtual' Brides In The Post-Soviet Context, Michael Paul Begin
Virtual' Brides In The Post-Soviet Context, Michael Paul Begin
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This project offers a multifaceted, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the contemporary post-Soviet Internet bride phenomenon and the rationales, motives, and aspirations of the industry's participants. As international marriage services have incorporated information and communications technologies (ICTs) to assist in the marketing of women of post-communist nations for correspondence courtship with Western men, the industry has furthered the globalization of marriage markets and the opportunities for communicative exchange among disparate nations and cultures. By way of case study, the project takes a special focus on the Belarusian/American segment of the industry, turning to personal interviews with participants and employing qualitative techniques …
A Comparison Of Select Trunk Muscle Thickness Change Between Subjects With Low Back Pain Classified In The Treatment-Based Classification System And Asymptomatic Controls, Kyle Benjamin Kiesel
A Comparison Of Select Trunk Muscle Thickness Change Between Subjects With Low Back Pain Classified In The Treatment-Based Classification System And Asymptomatic Controls, Kyle Benjamin Kiesel
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The purposes of this dissertation were to determine: 1) the relationship betweenmuscle thickness change (MTC) as measured by rehabilitative ultrasound imaging(RUSI) and EMG activity in the lumbar multifidus (LM), 2) if motor control changesproduced by experimentally induced pain are measurable with RUSI, 3) if a differenceexists in MTC between subjects with low back pain (LBP) classified in the treatmentbasedclassification system (TBC) system and controls, 4) if MTC improves followingintervention.Current literature suggests sub-groups of patients with LBP exist and responddifferently to treatment, challenging whether the majority of LBP is "nonspecific". TheTBC system categorizes subjects into one of four categories (stabilization, mobilization, direction …
Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao
Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prominent disease in developed countries, and age is an important factor in functional outcome. Although aged patients typically show diminished recovery compared to young patients, and have higher mortality and morbidity following TBI, the mechanism is not well understood. To date, there is no effective therapeutic for TBI. Previous studies indicate a secondary injury in TBI begins immediately after impact, and is likely the major contribution to delayed neuron dysfunction and loss. Studies also suggest mitochondrial dysfunction and increased free radical species (ROS) production following TBI may play a key role in the process. …
The Development And Test Of An Exchange-Based Model Of Interpersonal Workplace Exclusion, Kristin Damato Scott
The Development And Test Of An Exchange-Based Model Of Interpersonal Workplace Exclusion, Kristin Damato Scott
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The vast majority of social exclusion research has taken place outside of the workplace (i.e., in social settings). In addition, researchers often use a myriad of terms (i.e., ostracism, exclusion, rejection) when describing and investigating exclusion-related phenomena thus contributing to widespread conceptual confusion with respect to this construct. Moreover, past studies have failed to consider the role of social exchange in determining how individuals may react to being excluded by others particularly in a work setting. I sought to address these issues by conducting three multi-wave studies which develop and test a social-exchange based model of interpersonal workplace exclusion (IWE). …
Investigations Of Circadian Regulation And Immune-Circadian Interaction In The Horse, Barbara Anne Murphy
Investigations Of Circadian Regulation And Immune-Circadian Interaction In The Horse, Barbara Anne Murphy
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The circadian system provides animals with a means to adapt internal physiology to the constantly changing environmental stimuli that exists on a rotating planet. Light information is translated into molecular timing mechanisms within individual pacemaker cells of the mammalian hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) via transcriptionaltranslational feedback loops. Humoral and neural outputs from this master clock result in circadian rhythms of physiology and behavior. The hierarchy of the circadian system involves SCN synchronization of cellular clocks within peripheral tissues so that differential transcriptional profiles in individual organs reflect their specific function. The first step to investigating equine circadian regulation was to …
Processes Leading Self-Identified Heterosexuals To Develop Into Sexual Minority Social Justice Allies: A Qualitative Exploration, Julie Marie Duhigg
Processes Leading Self-Identified Heterosexuals To Develop Into Sexual Minority Social Justice Allies: A Qualitative Exploration, Julie Marie Duhigg
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The impact of homonegativity on both sexual minorities and heterosexuals is profoundly debilitating. Due to the implicit power of their privileged status, heterosexually-identified individuals can serve a crucial role as allies in eliminating sexual minority oppression. Because minimal research exists around heterosexual identity issues, broadly, and sexual minority ally development, specifically, it is difficult to promote such ally work without a clear understanding of the developmental processes and motivational issues that lead heterosexuals to sexual minority social justice action. The current study sought to explore the developmental experiences of heterosexuallyidentified exemplars who work in their communities for sexual minority social …

Precooling And Running Economy, Molly Rebecca Winke
Precooling And Running Economy, Molly Rebecca Winke
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Precooling, or a reduction in core temperature (Tc) has been demonstrated to be a potent enhancer of endurance running performance, however there is no known mechanism for this improvement. By holding the exercise workload constant, changes in variables such as running economy (RE), heart rate, and ventilation (VE) can be determined as a result of precooling. Improved running economy, or a reduced oxygen cost of a specific workload, is linked to improved exercise performance. Purpose: To determine the changes in flexibility, RE, heart rate, VE, and Tc during running at a constant workload following cool water immersion and to determine …
The Boethian Vision Of Eternity In Old, Middle, And Early Modern English Translations Of De Consolatione Philosophi, Kenneth Carr Hawley
The Boethian Vision Of Eternity In Old, Middle, And Early Modern English Translations Of De Consolatione Philosophi, Kenneth Carr Hawley
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
While this analysis of the Old, Middle, and Early Modern English translations of De Consolatione Philosophiandamp;aelig; provides a brief reception history and an overview of the critical tradition surrounding each version, its focus is upon how these renderings present particular moments that offer the consolation of eternity, especially since such passages typify the work as a whole. For Boethius, confused and conflicting views on fame, fortune, happiness, good and evil, fate, free will, necessity, foreknowledge, and providence are only capable of clarity and resolution to the degree that one attains to knowledge of the divine mind and especially to knowledge …

Theses
The present study investigated the relationships between the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Oral Reading Fluency and the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) as related to TerraNova2 Vocabulary and Comprehension scores for second grade students. Archival data gained from 60 participants during the 2004-2005 school year were utilized. The participants were from a school receiving Reading First funding in a northeastern city. Correlation and regression analyses were run on the DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency scores, DRA codes, and TN2 scores to determine the relationships among the three tests. Results found significant correlations and predictors for TN2 performance.
Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson
Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Intimate partner violence affects a significant portion of college-aged individuals, but researchers know little about how the intersection of age, race, class, and gender influence intimate partner violence among community college students in the United States. In this quantitative correlational study, I examined the relationship between intimate partner violence and gender, race, age, class, marital status, and past abuse among community college students using the intersectionality theory. I used the Abusive Behavior Inventory and a demographic survey to collect data via a convenience sample of the target population of men (n = 220) and women (n = 330) attending a …

Testing The Role Of Anxiety As An Underlying Mechanism Of The Alcohol-Aggression Relation, Joshua Parker Phillips
Testing The Role Of Anxiety As An Underlying Mechanism Of The Alcohol-Aggression Relation, Joshua Parker Phillips
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that acute alcohol consumption facilitates aggression through the reduction of adaptive anxiety/fear responses to danger/threat. Participants were 80 healthy male social drinkers between 21 and 33 years of age. They were randomly assigned to one of four groups: 1) Alcohol/anxiety induction (n=20), 2) Placebo/anxiety induction (n=20), 3) Alcohol only (n=20), and 4) Placebo only (n=20). Anxiety was induced by informing participants that they had to deliver a speech about what they liked and disliked about their body in front of a video camera. A modified version of the Taylor Aggression …
Publishing In Wartime: The Modern Library Series During The Second World War, Gordon B. Neavill
Publishing In Wartime: The Modern Library Series During The Second World War, Gordon B. Neavill
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
American book publishing during the Second World War had to cope with a huge increase in demand for books coupled with scarcity of resources, especially paper rationing imposed by the War Produc- tion Board. Based on research in the Random House archives and focusing on the Modern Library series, this article examines how publishers coped with wartime challenges and opportunities. Ran- dom House grew rapidly during the war. Sales reached the million dollar mark in 1941 and exceeded three million dollars by 1946. Many new titles were published in smaller printings than demand would have justified and were out of …
The Morality Of Property, Thomas W. Merrill, Henry E. Smith
The Morality Of Property, Thomas W. Merrill, Henry E. Smith
Faculty Scholarship
The relationship between property and morality has been obscured by three elements in our intellectual tradition. First is the assumption, which can be traced to Bentham, that property is a pure creature of law. An institution assumed to be wholly dependent on law for its existence is unlikely to be infused with strong moral content. Second is the related tradition, also Benthamite, of examining questions about property law from a utilitarian perspective. Utilitarianism is, of course, a moral theory. But in its modern applications, based on price theory and cost-benefit analysis, it adopts a framework largely indifferent to questions of …
The Gap Between What We Know And What We Do About Childhood Obesity: A Multi-Factor Model For Assessment, Intervention, And Prevention, Kim Hiatt, Linda Riebel, Harris Friedman
The Gap Between What We Know And What We Do About Childhood Obesity: A Multi-Factor Model For Assessment, Intervention, And Prevention, Kim Hiatt, Linda Riebel, Harris Friedman
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Childhood obesity in the United States has increased alarmingly and much is becoming known about multiple factors that contribute to this epidemic. These include environmental (e.g., prevalent junk foods), behavioral (e.g., inactivity), intrapsychic (e.g., depression), interpersonal (e.g., parenting style), as well as biological, socioeconomic, and cultural factors, to name just a few. A comprehensive multi-factor model of childhood obesity is presented based on extant research and its implications for assessment, intervention, and prevention are explored. Emphasis is placed on the importance of developing sound assessment approaches, on the potential value of treatment matching using interventions focused on assessment results on …

Pretreatment Variables For The Innovative Application Of Urine Alarm Treatment For Young Children In Fourteen Outpatient Clinics In Israel, Bettina Shapira, Pamela K.S. Patrick
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The influence of specific pretreatment variables (i.e., age, gender, birth order, number of children in the family, and family history of enuresis) on outpatient urine alarm treatment outcomes was examined. A total of 186 Israeli children between the ages of 4 to 7 participated in the study, and of those, 55 children were 4 years old. The entire sample was used to test the age-related pretreated variable, and all other pretreatment variables were solely analyzed using the sample of 4-year-old children at the time of treatment. The data were derived from two different sources: (a) treatment files from a clinical …

Relations Of Changes In Self-Efficacy, Exercise Attendance, Mood, And Perceived And Actual Physical Changes In Obese Women: Assessing Treatment Effects Using Tenets Of Self- Efficacy Theory, James J. Annesi, Jennifer L. Unruh, Ann C. Whitaker
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Obese and sedentary women ( N = 76) initiated an exercise and nutrition program based on self-efficacy theory. Significant within-group improvements in body fat, waist size, and body mass index were found over 6 months. Changes in Physical Self-Concept (task self-efficacy) and Exercise Self-Efficacy (self-regulatory efficacy) scores, together, accounted for a significant portion of the variance in exercise session attendance, R2 = .24, F = 11.67, p < .001, with both significantly contributing to the overall explained variance. Exercise attendance was significantly related to changes in Body Areas Satisfaction (β = .39) and Total Mood Disturbance (β = -.27) scores. Findings suggested a path from increased self-efficacy, to exercise attendance, to improvements in body satisfaction and overall mood. Suggestions for replication and extensions were given.
