The Firm Size, Farm Size, And Transaction Costs: The Case Of Hazelnut Farms In Turkey, Ibrahim Demir Dec 2007

The Firm Size, Farm Size, And Transaction Costs: The Case Of Hazelnut Farms In Turkey, Ibrahim Demir

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT This study analyzes the determinants of the size of the hazelnut farms in Turkey within the framework of the theory of firm and transaction costs. This study argues that, for a farm production function, land is a complex input with many transaction cost-increasing interactions with nature. Natural effects, such as land slope and variation in the weather conditions, can increase transaction costs. Transaction costs are the costs of using the inputs necessary for production. This study utilizes two separate data sets in order to test if the predicted relationship between transaction costs and farm size holds. The first data …

Inclusive dijet and trijet production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured for 10 < Q2 < 100 GeV2 and low Bjorken x, 10-4 < xBj < 10-2. The data were taken at the HERA ep collider with centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. Jets were identified in the hadronic centre-of-mass (HCM) frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of dijet and trijet differential cross sections are presented as functions of Q2, xBj, jet transverse energy, and jet pseudorapidity. As a further examination of low-xBj dynamics, multi-differential cross sections as functions of the jet correlations in transverse momenta, azimuthal angles, and pseudorapidity are also presented. Calculations at O (αs3) generally describe the trijet data well and improve the description of the dijet data compared to the calculation at O (αs2). © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300-318 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the range 0.3 < pT / M < 0.7. The particle rates have been extracted and interpreted in terms of the coalescence model. The (anti)deuteron production yield is smaller than the (anti)proton yield by approximately three orders of magnitude, consistent with the world measurements. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Revisioning History: A Rhetorical Redesign Of The Charleston Museum, Brittany Minors

All Theses

The Charleston Museum has the distinction of being the oldest museum in the United States, founded in 1773 and still operating today. It was begun as a branch of the Charleston Library Society and soon grew to be a significant institution in Southern and American scientific discovery and research. Over the 225 years of its existence, it has amassed an impressive collection of natural history specimens, as well as rare artifacts of Lowcountry history and culture. Unfortunately, the exhibits have been neglected since their most recent installment (roughly 20 years ago) and are in need of visual and ideological revision. …

Katherine Anne Porter's Adaptation Of Joycean Paralysis In The Pale Horse, Pale Rider Collection, Jamie Colwell Dec 2007

Katherine Anne Porter's Adaptation Of Joycean Paralysis In The Pale Horse, Pale Rider Collection, Jamie Colwell

All Theses

This thesis is a study of Katherine Anne Porter's Pale Horse, Pale Rider collection in relationship to James Joyce's Dubliners. The main focus of this study is Porter's use of Joycean paralysis in the three stories 'Old Mortality,' 'Noon Wine,' and 'Pale Horse, Pale Rider.' There is evidence in interviews and letters of Porter's admiration of Joyce, and her characters' states of hopelessness reflect a similar paralysis to those found in the following selections of Dubliners: 'The Dead,' 'Grace,' and 'Eveline.' Porter's collection of stories is not an imitation of Joyce's work; her voice and story setting remain distinct. However, …

Figuring The Digital, Molly Morin

All Theses

This body of work is a way of understanding, reflecting on, and contributing to a contemporary dialogue about the impact of digital technology and the Internet on society by looking at the organization of information that lies behind the computer screen, and creating work that is sourced directly from the Internet but becomes a tangible object in the physical world. I use methods of mass production and marketing to create artwork that values individuality over homogenization and complexity over efficiency, co-opting practical digital technology for the purposes of physical beauty. The work should inspire a sense of wonder through its …

Morphological Charts: A Systematic Exploration Of Qualitative Design Space, Gregory Smith Dec 2007

Morphological Charts: A Systematic Exploration Of Qualitative Design Space, Gregory Smith

All Theses

A morphological chart is a tool that represents a large qualitative design space. These charts list the functions identified for the design problem, and the means (solutions) that can perform each function. Combining one means for each function will produce a potential integrated conceptual design solution. Repeating this process with every possible combination contained in the morphological chart will generate a long list of conceptual design solutions. Not all of these solutions will be practical, or even physically possible.
As it is difficult to analyze a long list of design solutions and as at present, there are no systematic design …

A Breakdown In Boundaries: As Explored Through Abjection And The Language Of Abstract Art, Mary Hanley Dec 2007

A Breakdown In Boundaries: As Explored Through Abjection And The Language Of Abstract Art, Mary Hanley

All Theses

ABSTRACT
My work places emphasis on the anxiety and allure felt at the possibility of ingesting an object belonging to or displaced from the body through the language of abstract art. It links the fears and fascinations felt in situations of perceived abnormality and bodily aggression, to the objectification, or conversely abjection, of objects through images. I investigate a collapse in division between what the perceived identity of a thing or person is, and what it is not.
Each painting rejects an ideal of beauty as portrayed through stability, clarity, and compartmentalization, and embraces beauty as the interconnectedness of opposing …

Long-Term Evolution Of Massive Black Hole Binaries. Iii. Binary Evolution In Collisional Nuclei, David Merritt, Seppo Mikkola, Andras Szell

Articles

In galactic nuclei with sufficiently short relaxation times, binary supermassive black holes can evolve beyond their stalling radii via continued interaction with stars. We study this “collisional” evolutionary regime using both fully self-consistent N-body integrations and approximate Fokker-Planck models. The N-body integrations employ particle numbers up to 0.26×106 and a direct-summation potential solver; close interactions involving the binary are treated using a new implementation of the Mikkola-Aarseth chain regularization algorithm. Even at these large values of N, two-body scattering occurs at high enough rates in the N-body simulations that the binary is never fully in the diffusively-repopulated (i.e. large-N) loss …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present Spitzer mid-infrared spectra of 12 Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies over the 5-38 μm region. We compare the spectral characteristics of this sample to those of 58 Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies from the Spitzer archives. An analysis of the spectral shapes, the silicate 10 μm feature and the emission-line fluxes have enabled us to characterize the mid-IR properties of Seyfert 1.8/1.9s. We find that the EWs of the 10 μm silicate feature are generally weak in all Seyfert galaxies, as previously reported by several studies. The few Seyfert galaxies in this sample that show …

Sediment Transport Upstream Of Orifices, David Powell Dec 2007

Sediment Transport Upstream Of Orifices, David Powell

All Dissertations

Sediment transport upstream of orifices has not been studied outside the realm of the restoration of reservoir storage capacity. This experimental study used a large basin with a circular orifice outlet and a movable sand bed leveled with the invert of the orifice. Three sizes of non-cohesive, uniform sand were used with d50 values of 0.29mm, 0.72mm, and 0.89mm. Bed profiles at equilibrium scour conditions were measured for three different head levels for each sediment size. The maximum scour depth, length, and scour width were related to the particle size and the available head. The longitudinal and lateral extents …

Hybrid Image/Model Based Gaze-Contingent Rendering, Hunter Murphy Dec 2007

Hybrid Image/Model Based Gaze-Contingent Rendering, Hunter Murphy

All Dissertations

A non-isotropic hybrid image/model based gaze-contingent rendering technique utilizing ray casting on a GPU is discussed. Empirical evidence derived from human subject experiments indicates an inverse relationship between a peripherally degraded scene's high-resolution inset size and mean search time, a trend consistent with existing image-based and model-based techniques. In addition, the data suggest that maintaining a target's silhouette edges decreases search times when compared to targets with degraded edges. Benefits of the hybrid technique include simplicity of design and parallelizability, both conducive to GPU implementation.

Development Of Fullerene Based Sturctures For Photovoltaic And Electronic Applications, Amit Palkar Dec 2007

Development Of Fullerene Based Sturctures For Photovoltaic And Electronic Applications, Amit Palkar

All Dissertations

Solar energy can be envisioned as a long term alternative to rapidly depleting fossil fuels. The energy from the sun can be harnessed by constructing donor-acceptor (D-A) type devices where the incident photon induces the transfer of an electron from the donor to the acceptor. If recombination is prevented, this electron can then be channeled through an external circuit, thus leading to the generation of photocurrent. Porphyrins, which are the naturally occurring pigments in photosynthesis, have been widely established as donors while fullerenes, such as C60 and C70 , due to their unique electron accepting properties, have been …

The deminer was investigating the signal and excavating by sitting/squatting position and his prodder/bayonet detonated the PMN mine. The evidence on site shows that the excavation of the signal started from the first mark, and not 30cm back from the indication. The bayonet directly touched the mine causing a detonation. This indicates he was not conducting operations with the correct procedure.

A Context Aware Content Based Federated Access Control System For Healthcare Domain, Haseeb Amjad Dec 2007

A Context Aware Content Based Federated Access Control System For Healthcare Domain, Haseeb Amjad

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Masters Theses

Legislation to create electronic healthcare records and provide electronic healthcare services requires the same level of privacy and disclosure regulations as are applicable to the current practices for paper based patient health records. Most of work in this area has been organization-oriented that deals with exchange of information among healthcare organizations (such as referrals). However, the requirements for ensuring security and privacy of information for online access and sharing of health records in a federated healthcare environment have not been adequately addressed. To address this problem, we have developed a context-aware content-based access control policy specification framework, known as Generalized …

The Evolving Commons Concept: Information, Learning, Teaching, Research [International Conference On Information & Learning Commons, Dec. 10-11, 2007], D. Russell Bailey

Library Commons

The Commons concept, developed in the early 1990’s, has evolved over time, taking different shapes and involving different resources and services as it has evolved, including the Information Commons, the Learning Commons, the Library Commons and the Research Commons. There are numerous similarities among the various iterations of the Commons and some clear differences.

This presentation describes the basic foci and components of the Commons, found in most all iterations.

The presentation then delineates and describes the variations among the different types of Commons as they move from library-centric and tactical initiatives to institution-wide and strategic.

The Information-, Learning- and …

Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Limited Number Of Short Counterexamples, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber Dec 2007

Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Limited Number Of Short Counterexamples, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider two variants of a model for learning languages in the limit from positive data and a limited number of short negative counterexamples (counterexamples are considered to be short if they are smaller than the largest element of input seen so far). Negative counterexamples to a conjecture are examples which belong to the conjectured language but do not belong to the input language. Within this framework, we explore how/when learners using n short (arbitrary) negative counterexamples can be simulated (or simulate) using least short counterexamples or just ‘no’ answers from a teacher. We also study how a limited number …

Thermodynaimic Study Of Nucleic Acids Recognition By Aminoglycosides , Hongjuan Xi Dec 2007

Thermodynaimic Study Of Nucleic Acids Recognition By Aminoglycosides , Hongjuan Xi

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Since the origin of first aminoglycosides antibiotics, streptomycin, isolated by Selman Waksman about 60 years ago, a number of aminoglycosides antibiotics were discovered to treat different infections. Neomycin class aminoglycosides were found to originally target the A site 16S rRNA in the 30S subunit of the ribosome within the Gram-negative bacteria. In addition to its antibacterial effect, aminoglycosides were also found to binding to various other viral RNA structures such as TAR and RRE of HIV, Group I introns and hammerhead ribozyme, implying its potential to be used as antiviral reagent.

Furthermore, previous studies in our laboratory discovered a …

Investigation Of Structure And Properties Of Novel Multi-Layer Clay Nanocomposite Films Produced Controllably By Continuous Chaotic Advection Blending, Chaitra Mahesha

All Dissertations

Polymer nanoclay composites have been studied extensively in the past decade due to the excellent combination of properties they can offer at low loadings of clay. Despite robust research, the potential enhancements that nanoclays are theoretically predicted to offer have not been achieved. Such potential improvements in mechanical and gas barrier properties are realized only when the internal structure of the nanocomposite is optimized in terms of arrangement and orientation of nanoclay within the matrix. The mixing-based approach and the accompanying complex flow fields of conventional processing techniques widely used to produce nanoclay composites are unable to control the internal …
