Foraging Habitat Modeling And Nesting Ecology Of Wood Storks In Everglades National Park, Heidi K. Herring Jan 2007

Foraging Habitat Modeling And Nesting Ecology Of Wood Storks In Everglades National Park, Heidi K. Herring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Understanding the foraging and nesting ecology of Wood Storks will play an important role in Everglades restoration because this species has specific resource requirements during the breeding season which ultimately affect nest success. I conducted a foraging habitat use and selection study, which indicated that Wood Storks from coastal colonies, Paurotis Pond and Rodgers River Bay, require a narrow range of water depths in the mangrove-saltwater marsh ecotone near their colonies as well in the freshwater marsh habitats of the inland Everglades. Wood Storks nesting at the inland colony, Tamiarni West, relied heavily upon nearby freshwater marsh habitat and selected …

Exploring Diachronic Change In The Population-Specific Vocalizations Of Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes)., Andrew R. Halloran Jan 2007

Exploring Diachronic Change In The Population-Specific Vocalizations Of Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes)., Andrew R. Halloran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Chimpanzees have long been documented as using population-specific vocalizations, implying learning rather than just genetics in chimpanzee calls. In order for population-specific vocalizations to arise, diachronic change, or evolution, of the various features of the vocalizations must occur. When a population is split, as they were in the current study, there are changes of social structure, environment, and emotional stress (all factors which can lead to rapid phonological change in humans). These factors can act as a catalyst for punctuated diachronic change. A vocal survey was performed on two groups of chimpanzees who had been separated from each other two …

Factors Affecting Registered Nurses' Job Satisfaction And Intent To Leave, Joy Longo Jan 2007

Factors Affecting Registered Nurses' Job Satisfaction And Intent To Leave, Joy Longo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

It is estimated that there will be a 20% shortage of full time equivalent registered nurses (RN) by 2015. Retention of nurses is a priority in health care, so a better understanding of factors that contribute to job satisfaction and intent to leave is needed. One possible factor is the quality of the interpersonal relationships that occur among managers, peers, and nurses. A negative quality would be acts of hostility or horizontal violence, which is nurse-to-nurse aggression. This is theorized to be a result of oppressed group behavior. These behaviors may influence job satisfaction and the intent to stay on …

Gender Stereotypes And Gender Identity As Interacting Influences On Children's Self-Concepts: A Self-Socialization Model Of Gender Development, Desiree Denise Tobin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The goal of this study was to test the gender self-socialization model (GSSM). This model suggests that gender identity motivates children to strive for cognitive consistency between their gender stereotypes and their self-efficacy for those stereotypes. This study presents a novel approach to stereotype assessment by focusing on children's idiosyncratic stereotypes (as opposed to number of commonly shared stereotypes, which do not provide detailed information about the types of stereotypes individual children hold). Participants were 305 children in grades three through eight (Mage = 10.8 years). Independent variables included children's stereotypes of 62 contextually tagged behaviors and gender identity (comprising …

Heeding The Antiheroine's Call: The Rise Of The Antiheroine In Literature And Popular Culture, Cynthia C. Lyles-Scott Jan 2007

Heeding The Antiheroine's Call: The Rise Of The Antiheroine In Literature And Popular Culture, Cynthia C. Lyles-Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In my thesis, I argue three assertions: 1) that the 21 st Century antiheroine who has figured so prominently in literature and film is an evolution of the heroine archetype that combines both the action-oriented traditional male hero archetype and the tragically flawed, antagonistic anti-heroine archetype, 2) that the foundation for this newly modified pop culture antiheroine can be traced back to Margaret Mitchell's iconic character, Scarlett O'Hara, and finally 3) that this new modem heroine archetype, the antiheroine, has become an integral part of popular culture, both in literature and film as well as other popular media. As my …

Improving Cooperation In P2p Networks: A Social Network Approach, Victor Ponce Jan 2007

Improving Cooperation In P2p Networks: A Social Network Approach, Victor Ponce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Due to the dynamic nature of P2P systems, it is impossible to keep an accurate history of the transactions that take place while avoiding security attacks such as whitewashing and collusion, and abuse such as freeriding . This is why it is important to develop a mechanism that rewards cooperative peers and punishes misbehaving peers. Modeling P2P networks as social structures can allow incentive mechanisms to be used that prevent the negative behaviors mentioned. In this thesis, we extend a social network algorithm to include credit transfer between peers in order to reduce the path length of queries. We also …

"Heart Of My Race:" Questions Of Ldentity In Sicilian/American Writings, Chiara Mazzucchelli Jan 2007

"Heart Of My Race:" Questions Of Ldentity In Sicilian/American Writings, Chiara Mazzucchelli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Throughout the 1900s, the sense of a distinct sicilianita-or Sicilian-nessmanifested itself in writings by Italian authors such as Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Leonardo Sciascia, Vincenzo Consolo, and Andrea Camilleri, among others. Interestingly, a parallel phenomenon has emerged in the United States in the broader field of Italian-American literature. While attempting to redefine the concept of Americanness and expand the canon of American literature so that it embraces articulations of ethnic identities, many Sicilian-American writers have turned their works into literary manifestations of their Sicilian Americanness, or, as I have called it, sicilianamericanita. In this study, I try to answer questions …

A Study On Random Sum Statistics: Application To Wireless Network Performance Analysis, Suwat Pattaramalai Jan 2007

A Study On Random Sum Statistics: Application To Wireless Network Performance Analysis, Suwat Pattaramalai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The statistics of random sum is studied and used to evaluate performance metrics in wireless networks. Pertinent wireless network performance measures such as call completion/dropping probabilities and the average number of handovers usually require the probability distributions of the cell dwell time and call holding time; and are therefore not easy to evaluate. The proposed performance evaluation technique requires the moments of the cell dwell time and is given in terms of the Laplace transform function of the call holding time. Multimedia services that have Weibull and generalized gamma distributed call holding times are investigated. The proposed approximation method uses …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Loggerhead and green turtle neonates migrate from Florida's coast during a 24-36 h frenzy. Post-frenzy loggerheads are often found in flotsam (Sargassum), while postfrenzy green turtles "disappear." This study compared the frenzy and post-frenzy activity of each species, their response to flotsam (in the laboratory and field), and the role of experience in habitat selection. Both species were most active during day I; activity thereafter declined (especially in loggerheads). Inactive loggerheads occupied Sargassum and open water (day or night) whereas inactive green turtles occupied Sargassum by day and both habitats at night. Exposure to Sargassum had no effect on the …

“We Are On The Circumference Of The Union, But The Union Suffers Nothing From Coldness In The Extremities” The Civil War In California, Cathleen Compton Wineinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

When the Civil War began in 1861, the California Legislature pledged the state’s loyalty to the Union cause, and that allegiance never wavered. Location insulated the state from the major conflicts, and for most people, life remained relatively unchanged. Location also determined that California fought a different Civil War, faced a different enemy, and confronted challenges unique to its geography and position in the nation. California mines financed the Union war effort, and California Volunteers kept the peace throughout the West. The loyal population and the military monitored the activities of the large pro-southern minority, prevented any linkup with rebel …

The two principal areas of research addressed by this study were: a) further validation of Nowak and Vallacher's mouse paradigm, and b) comparison of literatures all theoretically derived from principles of hedonics. Validation of the mouse paradigm included examination of the instructional set and detection of individual differences in various hedonically derived measures of personality. The mouse instructions were framed in terms of approach ('less good ' versus ' more good') or in terms of avoidance (' more bad' versus ' less bad ' ). Inclusion of inventories based on the principles of approach and avoidance allowed for examination of …

An Application Of Artificial Neural Networks For Hand Grip Classification, Robbie R. Gosine Jan 2007

An Application Of Artificial Neural Networks For Hand Grip Classification, Robbie R. Gosine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The gripping action as performed by an average person is developed over their life and changes over time. The initial learning is based on trial and error and becomes a natural action which is modified as the physiology of the individual changes. Each grip type is a personal expression and as the grip changes over time to accommodate physiologically changes, it can be considered to be a grip-signature. lt is postulated that an ANN can deliver a classification mechanism that is able to make sense of the varying gripping inputs that are linearly inseparable and uniquely attributed to user physiology. …

An Investigation Into The Acoustic Variability And The Attenuation Of An Acoustic Signal Within A Port Environment Focusing On Port Everglades, Florida, Daniel Sheahan Jan 2007

An Investigation Into The Acoustic Variability And The Attenuation Of An Acoustic Signal Within A Port Environment Focusing On Port Everglades, Florida, Daniel Sheahan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A methodology for characterizing the acoustical properties of a port environment, namely Port Everglades, has been proposed and carried out. This approach includes both a port-wide analysis of how the basic oceanographic features within the port impact the acoustic properties, and also a more focused sampling methodology within a small region of Port Everglades, allowing for the acoustic characteristics, including ambient noise, and an approximate signal absorption to be computed. The results documented through the duration of this research indicate that the temperature variation throughout the port is the principal contributor to the characteristics of the sound velocity profile. Ambient …
